Right on the cusp of play vs. sit for the medical.

Let's see how Cam and Beyer are playing. He's one hell of a player, but you have to think, even if he's able to play by mid-October, he's not going to be Jake Motherf-ing Ryan until mid-November.

In fact Coach Hoke said immediately afterwards that they would apply for one...

That doesn't mean it's granted, but the fact that he didn't address the medical RS topic with Gardner for quite some time, but immediately said it would be addressed in Ryan's situation was striking.

Case Keenum played for like 19 years at Houston. It's possible.

Case Keenum was different, Jake Ryan is not getting a medical redshirt.  And even if that were an option, you don't sit a star player if he's ready to go just to get a medical redshirt.  Maybe a freshman who isn't going to add much, but not the heart and soul of your defense.

If he can go, he'll go. If he can't, he won't.  But there will be any decision to be made other than  "can you play or not."

Keenum played 3-4 games and got hurt and was granted a 6th year.

As for Ryan, again, I never said he should or shouldn't play. I also never said he would or wouldn't get a medical.

It's certainly possible for him to get a medical, and yes, there may be a decision if you're talking about playing 3-4 games and Cam Gordon is playing well in his RS Senior season.

I put qualifiers on it. Qualifiers are okay since this is all speculation from EVERYONE. Adrian Peterson came back from an ACL in a day and a half and was MVP, Derrick Rose is uncomfortable playing a game of pick up at the Boys & Girls Club after suffering the same (or similar) injury.

The speculation is only about whether or not he'll be ready, not about whether or not they'll hold him out just to get a medical redshirt.  You original post said that they'd have a tough decision is he's able to come back.   They do not.  They will play him.

Case Keenum injured himself during his last year of eligibility, and was granted a 6th year.  That is not the case with Jake. That is a major difference.  If this were Jake Ryan's 5th year senior season and he had to miss it due to injury, that would be an option.  But it's not.

Again, the arguement is not over whether or not JMKR gets a medical RS if he has to miss the whole season.  The argument is whether or not the coaches should hold him out to get said RS if he's good to go, and that should not be up for debate.  I don't care how good Cam Gordon is playing, they will play Jake Ryan.

But I said IF Cam and Beyer are playing well and IF he's not going to be 100% (not just back) until mid-November.

Again, I put qualifiers on it. You can't sit in from a computer and say if he can play then there isn't a decision. You're not Brady Hoke, you're not Jake Ryan. You don't know how effective "available to play" vs. "100%" is either. Lastly, you don't know what kind of year Gordon and Beyer are going to have. So neither of us, nor anyone else can say anything for certain.

If Gordon is having an All-B1G year and Ryan isn't going to be 100% until 2-3 games left in the season AND coaches feel like they can get a medical. I can see where a decisiion would come into play. That may be asking for a lot, but it's certainly not impossible by any stretch of the imagination.

You chose to read what you wanted to read and responded prematurely. Looks like both of us did that today (me in the Depth Chart thread).

I tend to think a medical redshirt will not be an option anyway, since he didn't get hurt in season and already used a regular redshirt. A medical hardship is a 6th year option for some who have had multiple season ending injuries.

This isn't basketball, unless you're a 1st round pick there is no incentive to leave early.

Ryan's a beast and one hell of a college player, but he's not a 1st round draft pick. At least not now.

I supposed if he had a crazy year he'd be Bobby Carpenter (F-Ohio). Or the college version (obvious comparison) Clay Mathews.

Both were taken in the late 1st I believe.

If JMFR ends up staying at Michigan for five years, I would hardly call that leaving early, even if he has the option to stick around for a sixth year on account of a Medical redshirt.  He is a college student.  Undergrad typically takes around four years, maybe five.  Unless he wants to get a Masters at UM or something, I could see why he would be ready to move on after five years.

I think people saying he was definitely out for the season were overreacting a bit. There is no reason for him not to play if he is healthy, even if it's just for a couple of games at the end of the season. Even if he isn't 100%, as long as he isn't at risk of getting injured again, he should play.

Maybe this is ridiculous to say but the only team whose offense I think we will truly NEED him against is Ohio State. Every other offense in the Big Ten (plus Notre Same) is such a joke that I don't think it will matter much whether he's there, and I'm sure Beyer/ Gordon will hold up just fine against those other teams. So if we only get him 100% for OSU, the Big Ten championship and the Rose Bowl, I will be just fine with that.

Meinke mentions it in the article, but you put it well here - the schedule is fairly backloaded. If you look at the rankings from last year for total offense as a reasonably accurate high level approximation of said backloading, we likely don't play anyone in the conference that cracks the Top 30 in Division I until Nebraska, and we get the Cornhuskers at home, which is huge for us.

It's great to hear that Jake Ryan could be back midseason or so, but then if you look at the schedule, it is quite manageable given the personnel that we have. It helps greatly, as the article mentions, that Jake is being Jake even in his rehab and committing fully and is "attacking" it, as he said he would soon after the injury.

Agreed, MSU, Neb, NW, Iowa, and OSU all fall in the month of November with an open date the week before.  Neb, NW, and OSU will probably be the best offensive teams we play and are 3 of our last 4 games.  And, for the record Neb and NW both appear to have quite a potent offense coming back with a running QB and RB combinations with Martinez/Abdullah and Colter/Mark.

I don't it's unlikely that he could come back midseason if Hoke said that in his press conference today.  Hoke isn't going to lie about that type of thing and there is a long time until October/November and we don't really need him until November.  We don't play any good offenses until then.

It doesn't matter if he red shirted already. If you have a year taken away from you due to injury, you're eligible to apply. Look at guys like Hummel from Purdue, etc. Even kids that have transferred, sat their transfer year (I.e. their red shirt year), then got injured at their new school, still get medical red shirts.

The only thing that typically prevents it is if the athlete plays part of a season. I.e. if he CAN come back, and we play him, obviously that'd kill all hope.

WolvinLA2

April 13th, 2013 at 5:58 PM ^

It's not automatic though.  Typicall guys like Hummel and Case Keenum who get 6th years are guys who either missed two seasons due to injury, or who missed their final year of eligibility (5th) due to injury.  They are then given the medical RS so they can play one last season.  This is not the situation with Jake Ryan, and it would likely not be approved.

You're correct that it's not impossible, but this is not typically the situation where you see it happen.

I read up on this and checked the rule book to get a good source

From what I had read it looks like the only way to get that 6th year is if you are hurt for season ending injuries in 2 seperate seasons causing you to only play 3 or less games at the begining of each of those seasons

meaning if you red shirt your freshmen year because you are not good enough or your coaches want you to get better by learning the scheme or get bigger, you lose the ability to medical redshirt

that is why when Keenum filed for that 6th year they had to find some paperwork showing he was injured in his freshmen year.  It has been inferred that most doubt he was injured that year and the paperwork could be fudged and so the school ran the risk of being caught if it was not true

Ryan is eligible for the medical redshirt. But it is far from automatic.  Furthermore, it gets sticky...if the NCAA thinks he is ready to play this year, they may dismiss the application for that reason too.

So if he is fit to play, he is better off playing.

i think there could be a debate. it depends on how the season is going. if the season is going ok and jake is at or near 100% by the sparty game on nov 2, i would play him. otherwise, it makes more sense to redshirt him.

Boom Goes the …

that would be incredible.  I think the defense can be great either way, but elite if he can come back and make plays

MichiganMan540

April 13th, 2013 at 8:30 PM ^

He won't be in playing shape to play as many snaps, so it really won't matter on how Gordon is playing. They'd both end up playing and Beyer would likely go back to WDE where he belongs. Hopefully we can get 6 regular season games, a B1G Championship and a National Championship. I don't think Jake would complain one bit!

I know that this is hard to believe, but I will take Jake Ryan for a half a season.Hopefully, some of the other guys step up in the mean time and find their strength. May be Jake Ryan is just what this team needs to step up from being a Big Ten contender to a BCS Bowl/National Championship contender.

Michigan doesnt really play a strong O the first half of the season, and you might even say they dont play a strong O all season (Nebraska at UM is iffy), however...

Michigan plays plenty of strong D's, and playing against a strong D means your O isnt doing very well, which also means the other team's O is on the field quite a bit.

Looking at Michigan's season, it is definitely back-loaded.  Looking at Michigan's season, Michigan should be playing for a BCS spot the entire season.  Given that, Hoke will put Ryan in the moment Ryan is ready.  If Ryan makes it more likely Michigan wins one more game of their final six games, you know darn well Ryan plays.
