Jake Ryan Article - Fluff

Submitted by redwhiteandMGOBLUE on

I stumbled upon this article on Cleveland.com Re. Jake's Michigan commitment.

http://highschoolsports.cleveland.com/news/article/-501138754723017016/…

The article gives some stats from this past season and lists some of his offers, all MAC schools.
The offer list is a little lacking but I still think this kid has a shot at being a productive B11 player, especially considering our current LB situation.
I think his videos show solid pursuit and tackling fundamentals, something thats been lacking the last couple of years imho.

If Kevin Leach can be a starter in the Big10...Jake Ryan certainly can!! And maybe sooner than later. Unlike most of our defensive commitments in the front seven, he is physically ready.

But in all seriousness, I wish the article said more about him being either an inside linebacker or a rush linebacker. The current make up of the class (Wilkins, Paskorz, Kinard, and Rogers at DE/Q), and the mysterious commitment of Steve Meher to Kent State following Ryan's commitment seem to point to him being an inside linebacker, the position he played in high school.

He looks like an ILB all the way to me.

I really like his stats, especially considering the level of talent he played against last year.

"Ryan used his outstanding pass-rushing technique to register a team-leading 104 tackles for the Wildcats with 62 solos, 26 tackles for loss, eight sacks, eight quarterback hurries, four deflected passes and two fumble recoveries. "

Check sarcasm meters, quick! Hence the "/" at the end of my comment. Sorry I haven't purchased the new sarcasm keystroke. Maybe I needed to use :/ or :P. I did watch his film, I think he's a great pick-up. I'm one of those that trusts the coaching staff's ability to scout and rate players more than recruiting services.

I am hoping the recruiting situation surrounding Jake Ryan is similar to the high school recruitment of Ben Roethlisberger. Because Ryan did not reach full potential until his senior year, many colleges and recruiting services seem to have overlooked him. Although the highlight videos do not show much of his ability to shed blocks and drop into coverage, his instincts and tackling ability are reminiscent of players ranked in the high 4* and 5* range. I really hope Ryan turns out to be the epitome of a "sleeper" prospect.

I like the idea that some of our recruits don't have these top schools after them. The idea that these kifs have something to prove sounds great to me.

Ignatius always puts a bunch of players in D-1 schools, and competes for the Ohio State Championship. Recent notable alum include Hoyer (at MSU) and Anthony Gonzales (OSU.) I can't remember the name of the two brothers from there who played for Michigan about 10 years ago.

At any rate, Ryan has a good chance of having been well coached and well prepared. I don't know how high his ceiling is, but I think he may have a clue on basic LB techniques, etc.

Don't forget Desmond Howard and Elvis Grbac when you mention St Ignatius as blasts from the past. St Ig is always one of the top few teams in Ohio as they recruit from the greater Cleveland area. By the way, I'm willing to bet you are Steve Kass that I know from my days living above Tarpley and Rellford as we know the b-ball players ran the asylum in those days under Freider and that you know me. Drop me a line at [email protected] and we'll get back in touch!

I'm sure you know this, but I read somewhere that he was given that distinguished honor by mistake. The folks at People didn't have the heart to pull him from the list once he had been notified, though, so they ran with it -- hence the last line in the article: "His personality makes him sexy."

edit: also, +1 for Toronto
