Jaguars GM wants Henne to be 2014 QB

Scrolling along the bottom of the NFL channel draft coverage I see where GM Dave Caldwell tells ESPN that he would like first round draft pick Blake Bortles to be Jags' starting QB in 2015. He would like our very own Chad Henne to start in 2014. Encouraging, yes. But what will the head coach do? Will the owner pay Blake big bucks to hold a clipboard or relay plays?

thought Garappolo was actually the best QB in the draft. Getting to play under Brady should help his learning curve. However, it appears Mallett didn't learn under Brady. Otherwise he would be the QB of the future and the Pats wouldn't take a QB this high. It does appear time the Pats will move on and Mallett witll be gone.

Mallet is a free agent after next year. Brady will likely not retire after next season, and so Mallet will move on. The Pats may trade Mallett (Houston is the logical destination), but they may also value not having a rookie as a backup. When they drafted Mallett, they still had one year of Hoyer before he became a free agent. This seems like the same pattern.

A similar example: anybody remember Matt Hasselbeck? The Packers drafted him in 1998 and traded him to Seattle in 2001 since at the time it was clear that Favre wasn't close to *cough cough* retirement. (Holmgren was coach in Seattle at the time, but had also been coach of the Packers when Hasselbeck had been on the practice squad.)

himself into the position of being an attractive QB, if he takes advantage of this opportunity to be the starting QB for a season.  He has to know that Bortles, as the #3 overall pick, will take over by the start of the 2015 season,  regardless of how well Henne performs.

This will probably be Henne's best remaining opportunity to show what he can do.  I wish him the best!

Henne got a second NFL contract for legit money.  Can't find the details on his first deal, but best guess is he's made roughly $10 million, at least.  If he plays just okay this year he'll probably make even more.  For playing occasionally and not being all that great as an NFL qb (not a knock on the guy, that shit is super hard), he's doing pretty fantastic.

I would gladly take that cash even if I had to listen to the 8 Jacksonville Jaguar fans alive tell me I suck for the rest of my life.

I'm not trying to directly hate on Henne, moreso making light of a situation that will almost certainly occur. If Jacksonville continues to suck, which is really quite likely, people (fans, ownership, whomever) are going to want that top draft pick to come and try and shake it up. Archie Manning said it best, you don't draft a top guy to sit him.

Living in Jacksonville now and somewhat following the team since December, not everyone was happy with the Blake Bortles pick.  From what the local media said, it was about a 50/50 split among cheers/boos at the Jags draft party when the pick was announced.  Jacksonville just disposed of former first round bust Blaine Gabbert (10th overall in 2011) to San Fran, so you can understand why they are weary of this selection.  The Jags have a lot of needs, not everyone is sold on this year's QB crop, but they opted to take Bortles, who some believe is a Gabbert clone.  Gabbert was rushed in to action when he was drafted and it failed miserably.

It seems like when a GM takes a QB very early in the draft, that's a big risk.  You're going to build your team around that guy and if he's a bust, fans are going to call for your head.  They have a lot riding on the Bortles selection and they don't want to make the same mistake with Bortles that they made with Gabbert.  So ideally Henne will be the starter this year to give Bortles time to adjust and learn and be more prepared to take over.
