Jadaveon Clowney wouldve been ejected for hit on Vincent Smith??

Submitted by natesezgoblue on

Mike Pereira(former VP of NFL officiating) says Jadeveon Clowney would be ejected under new NCAA rule.

Is this really where CFB is going?

"If I'm an official, based on 'when in doubt,' he's out. He's ejected. And when that goes to replay there's no way they overturn it. There's a great potential that hit causes an ejection this year."

From what I've heard* the definition of the targeting rule has been altered in addition to the increase in penalty.  I've been told that if the season follows what referees are being told/shown in meetings this summer, then we better be ready for many, many ejections.

*Conversation I had with a college official.

Clowney was "targeting" the area defensive players are taught to hit - not his fault that when 6'7" hits 5'6" he's hitting Vincent's head.  Clowney would have to play knee football to NOT hit Vincent's head.

That being said, I hope this does not become an issue. If I were an USCe fan, I would have been pissed if that caused Clowney to be ejected. I really hope this rule doesn't cost Michigan a game...

Also, not a shot at the OP, why is this being brought up? Who the fuck cares if a play last year would have resulted in a ejection? They used this play as an example to get clicks on a link, not to drive a point home. Lazy, good-for-nothing, article-writing... /trails off.

Also, based on the example in link, this would probably result in a ejection...

I was trying to say, I am not scolding the OP for posting this. Rather, I was taking a shot at the original article, and didn't want the OP to think I was talking to him.

And my point exactly. Clowney went crown of the head to Smith's chest, and Clark went crown of the head to Miller's. If Pereira is going to say Clowney would have been ejected, I am saying Clark probably would have to, and that is the kind of issue I have with this rule.

Wow.  If true, I'd recruit as many slot ninjas as possible.  Guys like Vincent are so tough to bring down if you go "low" and they have virtually no area to attack up "high".  Those guys are going to be hard to bring down without losing players to ejections.

but then ceded to the fact that Clowney led with the crown of his helmet.  Can a 6'6" DE physically NOT lead with the crown of his helmet when trying to hit a 5'6" Vince in the chest without being on his knees?  Wouldn't this also been deemed an illegal hit if Clowney went "high" and made contact with Vince's head?  It seems that there was no way this hit could happen that won't be an ejection in the future.

Clowney leaned way over to get the very top of his helmet to hit the bottom side of Vincent Smith's face mask. He was clearly trying to use his head as a battering ram. I want there to be hits in footbal too, but this kind of hit gets people badly injured.

where games are changed more often by officials' opinions. However, there are many on here complaining about concussions and how they may end football as a sport.

This is the kind of thing that has to happen to change the sport. The kids coming up through Pop Warner, Middle School, and High School are all learning "heads-up" tackling now.

If Clowney had heads up tackled Smith, his facemask would have hit Smith while he lifted Vincent off the ground and then tackled him. There is no wrapping up, there is no hitting with the crown of your helmet. They still would have flown through the air and Smith would have landed on his back, but the helmet was less likely to come off and the football less likely to come out.

Anyway, the forced transition is going to be painful with key ejections in key games. Bench depth becomes more important.

But the only way to move towards player safety is to change player behavior, and to protect them more when they get, or it is suspected they have a concussion.

Good point on teaching kids. They've done it in hockey for years to eliminate hitting from behind into the boards (putting stop signs on the back of jerseys, etc.). It will take time but it will help.

That said, the end outcome shouldn't get rid of hits like Clowney's....it wasn't a shot to the head and was just the unfortunate outcome for a short guy in the wrong place at the wrong time.

How the hell are you supposed to tackle someone without the top front of your helmet/facemask hitting first?

Seriously? We've come to this.

The Irony.  You would be saying "Ahhhh this hit never gets old" if it were one of our guys who layed the wood like that.  The only annoying part is 50% of the people still think it was Denard that got hit and the other 50% fail to note that Vincent Smith jumped right back up afterwards.

You missed the point completely. I mean no shit you should like it if it were your own team but you should also be able to appreciate fine hits even if it is against your team.

Unless you don't mind coming off as a homer. If that is your cup of tea by all means sip on it.

...it's time to shift the game to flag football like they do for the IM stuff.  Or maybe two-hand touch like we used to do at the neighbor's house.

You clicked the link.  It did its job.  I don't have a lot of concern that hits like JC's will lead to ejections.  It was a good football play within the rules and in the spirit of the game.  He tackled just how every coach had taught him to since he was... well less massive, but he was probably never small.  It was all kinds of terrible looking and I still cringe when the replay comes on, but that's sometimes part of football.

To me it always felt like a fair hit.  If VS has been about 40 pounds heavier and Clowney even remotely blocked, it's just a normal hit behind the line.  The helmet, the circumstances, etc. made it look worse than it was.

The ball should be dead when the helmet comes off. That was in the rules last year. I think it should have been Michigan ball. If it's spearing then eject... this was not spearing. We will see how it's enforced.

illegal about that hit. Sucks that it happened to somebody on UM, but that hit is simply the end product of  a large man being unblocked and hitting a much smaller individual at full speed. There is a certain point in terms of limiting what defensive players can do, where the game literally becomes glorified flag football. If that type of hit becomes illegal that is further moving toward that point. Alot of people myself, included, would lose interest in the game if it get's to that point. I understand the need to get dirty hits that are targeting the head out of football, but trying to make clean hard hits illegal is going over overboard.
