Submitted by Fhshockey112002 on

Per Bob McKenzie, Jacob Trouba whos draft rights belong to the Winnipeg Jets (Currently 3rd in the East) will be making a decision the next couple days if he stays at Michigan or turns pro.

Edit: Seems like the same is true for Jon Merrill.

WPG prospect Jacob Trouba, the Univ of Michigan D whose NCAA season ended Sun, taking a couple of days to decide if he should turn pro now.

There is no reason for him to return. After an outstanding freshman season his Michigan career has been a disaster, why would he want to come back?

I'm not going to blow smoke, maybe you guys aren't ready to here that. Jon was the best defensemen in college hockey, but he missed 45 games in the last two years.

This isn't like Lewan who could have left on top, the last two seasons for Jon have been nothing but negative. He chose to come back and was suspended for 25 games. He came back AGAIN and broke a vertebrae missing 19 games. Why would he want to come back for a third time?

The general consensus has been that Trouba would be a 2 year player, so I expect him to be back. Still needs to spend a little more time building up bulk and growing into his body to be NHL ready, and he might as well do that here as opposed to in the minors.

With Merrill, it depends on how his off the ice behavior has been. He mainly came back last year because after his discplinary issues, it made more sense to stay in college where things would be a bit more structured as opposed to leaving for the pros where he'd have total freedom to lapse back into bad choices.

While I expect Trouba to be back as well, his development this year was amazing to watch. He went from taking runs at guys near center ice (and hanging the goalie out to dry), to staying back (mostly) longer to deliver the hit. Also, his end to end skills improved drastically throughout the season. That being said, completely agree with the need to bulk up. Hopefully he comes back.

I miss the years when these kinds of decisions were solidified on a long bus ride back to the team hotel late on a Friday night in places like Denver and Grand Forks. Not in Ann Arbor on a weekday.
