Obviously students can't be granted athletic scholarships as PWO, but by targeting Ivy League types for these PWO spots that would seem to give them a leg-up on earning academic scholarships, right? Are there limits to the academic scholarships that can be given to PWO?

I don't believe they can get academic scholarships and play a sport otherwise it would have to count against that sport's limit.  I may be wrong, but it likely has to be that way otherwise many schools would just give PWO status to a lot of guys and give them academic stuff.

I would think they would go through the normal process to determine grants, scholorships (merit and need) as all other students.  So if the PWO is low income, they are eligible for need based scholorships.  Michigan has greatly improved need based aid for out of state students, so that can really help with getting out of state PWOs.

And generally not merit awards either.  It's pure financial need all the way up and down the ladder. The biggest benefit of Ivy money is that many schools do not provide loans but essentially all grant money, so you get out of school without any meaningful debt.  I am not 100% sure that Columbia plays it this way but I believe they do.

So the financial implications of moving from Columbia to Michigan are unknown, but Columbia's package is likely more lucrative and not dependent on playing ball.

So if the motivation is not financial, it could be something else.  For example, if he wanted to be a business major (Ivies don't have them, except Penn and possibly Cornell), or some other curricular reason.

This is a great way to bring in intelligent, driven players and further motivate them by giving them a chance to earn both playing time and a scholarship for future years.  Even if only a handful make it, it's certainly low risk and only adds competition to the roster.

We need to preserve this thread, as strange as that may sound on the surface.

What I mean here is that you don;t see "flip from Columbia" all that often for various reasons, so it definitely stands out even if it doesn't necessarily mean to do so.

NCAA Bylaw 15.02.4.3. This rule states that any financial aid except that which is specifically exempted is going to count as athletic aid and make the student a “counter” in terms of scholarships.

But this is the NCAA so nothing is that clear.  I have to think that Michigan has had some very academically qualified players in the past that were always counted towards the 85.

EDIT:   or this??

FINANCIAL AID -- COUNTABLE FINANCIAL AID -- TEAM LIMITS -- INSTITUTIONAL ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS

Status: Adopted Final

Intent: To specify that institutional academic scholarships based solely on a student-athlete's academic record at the certifying institution are exempt from an institution's equivalency computation, provided the recipient has completed at least one academic year in residence at the certifying institution and has achieved a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.300 (on a 4.000 scale) at the certifying institution; further, to specify that all institutional financial aid (including aid that is exempted from an equivalency computation) awarded to a counter may be used to meet the minimum financial aid requirements for Division I membership.

A.    Bylaws: Amend 15.5.3.2.1 by adding new 15.5.3.2.1.2, page 206, as follows:

"15.5.3.2.1 Exceptions

[15.5.3.2.1.1 and 15.5.3.2.1.2 renumbered as 15.5.3.2.1.1.1 and 15.5.3.2.1.1.2, unchanged.]

"15.5.3.2.1.2 Institutional Academic Scholarships.  Institutional academic scholarships that are part of an institution's normal arrangements for academic scholarships, based solely on the recipient's academic record at the certifying institution, awarded independently of athletics interests and in amounts consistent with the pattern of all such awards made by the institution, are exempt from an institution's equivalency computation, provided the recipient has completed at least one academic year of full-time enrollment at the certifying institution and has achieved a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.300 (on a 4.000 scale) at the certifying institution."

Out of curiousity I looked up Columbia's football attendance figures. 3K - 5K for most home games, with homecoming getting over 10K. Stadium holds 17K. Sounds dismal.

No winning seasons as far back as ESPN has info.
