Jack Harbaugh vouches for Hoke

Submitted by caup on
“I was so excited when I heard the news,” Jack Harbaugh said. “I’ve got a pretty good idea what the Michigan fans are in for, and they’re going to like it. A very disciplined football team, hard-hitting, well-coached, grounded in fundamentals — the kind of teams Michigan fans have been very accustomed to seeing.”

I sure hope so. The more people come out giving these ringing endorsements, the more i like this hire. I give Brandon early props but the jury is still out (obviously).

I mean great that he thinks so, but it doesn't really change anything, in fact the more they tout the endorsements from anywhere and everywhere, the more it looks like an orchestrated campaign.

........and the 'seeing an M team that I am used to seeing' part doesn't really help much either.......is that the 1-5 against OSU and bowls loss teams he is speaking of?

What gives?  It's "naive" to take no issue with the fact that respected football minds like our new football coach???  Even if you hate the hire, why in the world would it bother you that people are saying positive things about Michigan football?  Very odd.  You're acting a bit like the Japanese solider of lore who comes out of the moutains years after WWII, unaware that the war has ended.

We have a new coach.  A lot of people are happy.  A lot of players, coaches, fans and press approve of the hire.  All of that is positive.

Thing is, hardly any of these endorsements really sound like endorsements. They usually say things like "he's a solid choice" or "his teams hit hard." It's all platitudinous and usually pretty light on superlatives relating to the coach's, you know, coaching ability.

I don't think that many people would come out and say Brady Hoke is a great coach if they did not believe it.  I doubt even more that a bunch of old Carr supporters got together and decided to all give their public approval of the hiring of Hoke.

I'm pretty sure that these comments are coming left and right because these people know Hoke and really believe he is a good hire.... but that's just me.  And I'm not really sure why people insist on comparing Hoke to Carr.  Sure, he worked for Carr but that sure as hell doesn't mean that he's an identical coach.  Your 1-5 against OSU comments are irrelevant.

people who hire coaches. They write press releases, plant quotes, organize interviews, time news releases and such, feed articles to reporters, etc., all to do what is typically called staying 'on message' in terms of controlling a news story to your advantage. It is PR 101.

You shape the announcement and message, garner supporting voices ahead of time and release them over a period of time and do whatever you can to place or handhold journalists/news sources to write something sympathetic to that message.

It is happening and again, it isn't a bad thing and should happen with a coaching hire, but to do too much can make you look a like you are trying to gloss over something.

Hoke is going to have to win games. Big games like OSU, MSU, NEB.

He won't be able to hide behind favorable quotes.  At the end of the day, all of this Brady Hoke manlove might get him the fourth year RR did not get if he is losing games.  It won't get him anything else.

in fact I would be surprised if it wasn't happening.

then point I was making is that it can be over done and seems in my opinion to be reaching that point. Everyone has heard the news by now, people have more or less come to terms with it and have an opinion, so continuing to to flood people with 'he is a great guy' vouchers may be counter-product if it goes too far

What a bizarre tact you're taking here...Do you really think that people will be turned off if too many former players and coaches (from all over the country) publicly state this to be a good hire?  Would you be happier if John Navaree said, "I hate that Brady Hoke guy"?  People are happy and excited about Michigan football.  That's a good thing.

I was unaware that Cooper coached our bowl opponents those years.  And for all the crap people give Cooper, he sure didn't lose much to teams other than Michigan.  When Hoke was here, we beat three top-5 OSU teams.

Well, it's true - we've gone 1-7 against OSU since Hoke was last here.  Do I think he alone is the missing link that will change everything?  No.  But you're trying to pin the losing streak on him, and that's just plain wrong.

I was stating that when hoke was playing OSU, they were beating a Cooper-led OSU.

When he plays OSU this year, he will be playing a Tressel-led OSU and the one obvious factor in terms of the link to when 1-7 started is......that's right, Tressel, certainly not the absence of Brady Hoke.

How about we stop whining and start supporting? Seriously! Is it going to make you feel any better if Hoke is unsuccessful because you didn't support him? We all like to point to Bo...but how many of you are behaving in accordance to those principlels? Get behind the team, and if you can't do it, we really don't need you as a fanbase. Michigan fans have a HORRIBLE reputation in other parts of the country because of our Diva attitudes. Folks, we went 15-22 over the last 3 years, THE HORROR (I know this was 4 years ago), Toledo, tOSU gving us 2 of the 6 most lopsided loses in the history of that rivalry, etc. That is a great source of pride, but if that is going to be our retort to Michigan sucks, we are going to continue to struggle. We need to get behind the program, we need to be positive, and we need to win. The whining fanbase hurts us. It may not affect recruiting in Michigan, but it does in other states (here in FL). Why would a Florida recruit want to come to UofM when they constantly hear how unqualified the coach is? Miami fans, I am sure are not thrilled with Al Golden hire, but I have yet to hear a negative word about him from Hurricane fans.

While I've found mtzlblk to be one of the most oboxious, insulting and offensive RR-supporters on mgoblog, he is still a fan and shouldn't be told "we don't need you as a fanbase".  All of that "STFU" and "GTFO" nonsense was (to me) the most disagreeable of the RR-supporters' vocab.

I disagree with him on most things.  I think he's wildly over the top in his positions, but he's clearly passionate about the program and shouldn't be told, in essence, to "beat it" because he sees things a different way.  I hope, now that RR is gone, we can all move away from the "you're not a real fan" stuff.

But your quote ends saying,

the kind of teams Michigan fans have been very accustomed to seeing

IIRC, we were tired of the 8 - 4 and 9 - 3 teams we were very accustomed to seeing. Or, in a good year, we were tired of getting to the Rose Bowl and having USC linemen lick their chops because Michigan arrogance doomed us to failure. (There's a quote somewhere from mocking USC players about how predictable Michigan was.)

So, I'm fine with Hoke and all. I'm greatly looking forward to a better defense. Not that that wouldn't have happened anyway, with so many guys back, and the secondary having so much more experience. But I'll reserve judgement on Hoke until I see how Denard (if we are so lucky) and the receivers and running backs are used next year. My fear is that we have an offense with a skillset like a Ferarri, but Hoke and crew will use it like a rusty Dodge Caravan. Big, heavy, reliable, but not very fast or sexy.

John also endorsed him when he took the San Diego State job. Tressel put in a good word as well.

“Brady Hoke is one of the very fine coaches in this land. He and his staff care about their players and demand excellence in all phases of their program. The Aztecs will enjoy great success with coach Hoke!”- Jim Tressel, head coach of The Ohio State

“San Diego State made the right choice. Brady has done one of the great coaching jobs in the country at Ball State.I think he has proven what an
outstanding coach he is.He rebuilt the Ball State program and what he did this year was simply an amazing job. “He did a tremendous job recruiting California when he was at Michigan and he has outstanding ties on the West Coast having coached at Oregon State. From a recruiting standpoint, he is a great fit. “He has a great way with people and he is fun to be around. He is a very demanding coach and has the ability to be tough, while at the same time be respected as a leader. I know he will do a great job at San Diego State. He loves the game and is a hard-working guy. The kids are going to want to play for him.”
- Lloyd Carr, former head coach of Michigan

“(He is) one of the finest football coaches in America. He is a proven winner and more importantly, he is a tremendous family man. He’s also a great friend. The people of San Diego State should be very proud that Brady Hoke is their head football coach.”
- John Harbaugh, head coach of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens

I honestly think we got a good coach but i'm still sad that RR did not get the same support when he was hired.
