This quote is spot-on:

"That paper still acts like it never did anything wrong and like that piece isn't the journalistic paraquat that it is"

Yes.

I'm in favor of anything that exposes the NCAA as Cartman's CBAA.

Preach on, Mr. Peppers.

Also: +1 (refreshing) for "should've."

Exactly.  He chose to take the stipend and pay rent vs. live in dorms.  The stipend is pretty good too (at least as of 5 years ago), so it would seem he's going all out on rent.

Save me the starving comments.  They are pretty distasteful to people actually starving.

The dorms aren't cheap at all, so I'm not sure from where that assertion comes.  Also, yes, starvation is a real and tragic thing.  It should not be trivialized and most of us cannot even imagine what actual starvation is.  However, when UM and the NCAA is making tons of money off of you and you burn a ridiculous amount of calories a day only to compensate that with an order of Noodles and Co..... we have a problem.

His scholarship would cover the dorms, which comes with unlimited meal plan.  He chose to forgoe that for the stipend.

Jabrill might be in the 0.01% of student athletes who actually makes more money for a school than he gets in various compensation.  That's yet to be seen.  But, until then, he should probably be thrilled with the amazing financial and educational gift he has earned and been rewarded with.

absolutely, he is complaining of being taken advantage of by the NCAA without having done much on the field. if denard would have said the same thing after the 2010 season he would have a stronger case. Denard was the poster boy for Michigan football and the NCAA, bringing in millions for his athletic achievements on n the field. Peppers might well be a star, but until then he is just another redshirt freshman who hasn't done very much on field yet. I'd say he's cost Michigan and the ncaa more than he's contributed so far in his career, when you factor in the 150k + that michigan spends on each scholarship football player.

taking the field during the fall?   How are OL recruits going from 280 to 300 lbs. if they are not getting proper nutrition?    I'm not a big fan of Colin Cowherd but he was right when he said most football players at major D1 programs live better lives than 90% of most Americans.

Not too long ago I had a friend who played D1 football and this dude ate like a king at the training table and he received a debit card that allowed him to order food anytime he wanted at certain restaurants around campus that billed the athletic department.

I'll say what I always say on these types of threads. If he wants to eat better, he can take out a FAFSA Loan like the majority of the rest of us did. Also, it's funny how none of the non-revenue athletes ever complain about the expenses they are allotted under the NCAA rules

Non-revinue athletes don't complain because they are being subsidized by guys like Jabrill Peppers, they are getting an amazing deal and they'd be stupid to bite the hand that feeds them. Guys like Peppers may or may not be getting a good deal but we'll never know because the guys collecting the money have rules prohibiting talent from negotiating. The only recourse athletes have is speaking out against the system. They can't hire someone to represent their position because they'd be declared ineligible so it's not especially surprising when they post awkward protests to social media. That's how 19 and 20 year olds communicate.

So, the stipend is based on the dorm costs for each school.  Michigan's website has a single dorm room listed at $14,100 for the fall/winter terms.  That's roughly $1,700 a month.  If the stipend is that much, that's not bad at all for a college student.  You get a roommate and you're looking at over a thousand dollars a month for food, transportation, weekend fun, etc.  On top of the free food, gear, clothing, tutors, etc they already get.

I struggle to see the plight of the poor college athlete that's on full scholarship.  Also, starting August 1, the stipend will increase since the "full cost of attendance" figures that were approved will go into effect.

Why are so many people here getting worked up and bashing a Michigan football player for a tweet?  Grow up and let it go.

Michigan's stipend was estimated at $2,054 for last year. That is obviously probably not realistic for this year  but it is really not that much. The highest in the Big Ten was a little less than $5000 an academic year. That's not bad money, but that's nothing insane either. Also, these are freaking athletes who work out 3 times a day....I spent around $80 a week on food and i am not Peppers.

Secondly, for all you who are saying I don't feel bad about someone acting like their not getting their due, lets put it in perspective, Let's say you were a salesman responsible for around $1,000,000 in sales a year for a profit of like $400,000 after COGS. Then your business came around and said you, the guy making the sales, are really not that important so we are going to only pay you $40,000 and use the other $360,000 to build nice offices and pay our bosses who are actually important.

That is literally the cost structure of the NCAA. How pissed would you be knowing that you are responsible for $400,000 in profit but only getting $40,000.

About 3 years ago Michigan football made $14.8 M in profits. Let's say we spread across 100 players  (including walk-ons...) and you get $148,000 in profit per player. That is after all of  the buildings, coaches, support staff, and everything else that goes into football. Now, do you want to really argue that Denard Freaking Robinson, who sold thousands and thousands and thousands of jerseys, didn't make $400,000 in profits...that's silly. Sorry, this is literally a perfect example of why the football players are getting a raw deal.

They need representation and their needs should be at the forefront of the football program.

It is $14.8 M in profits. All of those expenses are part of the cost? Also, THEY are the revenue makers. They are the ones that we go to watch.

Look, it is like you are arguing for a company town where we provide them with food, housing, water, and health but nothing else and that is equal and fair. How many company towns were equal and fair? How many of them exist today?

Also, I am so cool for going back to my comments...I just like to have these discussions and just don't totally understand the opposition so it is fun / depressing to see what it is.

Yeah, don't want to get too old-man here, but sometimes you can just think things and not put it on social media for everyone to consume.  I get that college athletes feel they are not properly compensated for their services, but Peppers complaining about poor food when the decided to move out of the dorm system (and I know still has access to food services as a student and an athlete if he so chose) isn't a good move.

I'm in favor of new dorms and a personal chef for players, similar to Kentucky's $7 million basketball apartment (Kansas is planning a $17.5 million apartment complex for its basketball players). I think 50% of residents have to be non-athletes to meet NCAA requirements.
