Jabrill Peppers has agreed to blog for USA Today about his life and football recruitment. Here's a link to his first entry... which also has a link to his music video.
Jabrill Peppers Blogging for USA Today
I do feel like I'm gonna be coming to a decision soon though. I just want it all to be over and done with.
Actually a lot better than what I was expecting. Props Breezy.
Or super lazy and unable to see site right now: Is it a video blog alone or written words and then his music videos/other videos?
And I'm likely 100% wrong and I like the kid as a person even more. Says once he decides it's final to the point that he won't even talk to other staffs to keep focused on school and his music. Again, Michigan or not, I like this kid's attitude! I just hope he goes to Michigan, haha.
That's the first time I've embedded a video, so you can bet I'll be overdoing it from here on out.
Although I've kinda set the bar high for myself by posting easily the best song ever written about having your period. No where to go but down from there, really.
Has a little A Tribe Called Quest vibe to it.
Produced by MF Doom. Wow.
It's just a Doom beat, not especially produced for him.
However, a quick decision doesn't seem to go along with a national blog about his recruitment and life. Would he tap a sentence or two about how much he likes Stanford or Michigan and then talk about music and life each entry after June/July? Sounds cool and good for him (really!) but it doesn't exactly seem to vibe with an early and final decision. To me anyway but I'm a big proponent of letting a human being making a serious life choice (or not) to do whatever they want or go wherever they want if not harming others and happy! As I said in the thread about his and his Father's story: I'll root for a kid like that wherever he goes. I'd love it to be Michigan, though.
I see it more as a move to get his musical talent out to more viewers than anything else. Also, it is most likely usatodays idea and as a 17 year old kid he simply said, "sure, why not?"
As I wrote above (or below depending on viewing format) I just got the site to load on my phone and I was wrong and came out liking the kid more. As you said, I'm sure it was also a "why not" type thing. I'd do it and it allows more to hear his music so win-win for him really. Good for him!
I'll definetly root for him too.
The life has been hard on him but the kid is hungry as hell ! Wish him the best
Very down to earth and I can get behind his nickname j real. Pretty smart to not worry about combines and camps. Consensus number 2 recruit across all sites has very little room to improve his ranking, and every play he makes/misses will be scrutinized and dissected to death.
He will prove his ranking with his senior year. Just staying healthy and enjoying your summer after your senior year is a smart move for a top 10 kid IMO.
One small correction, he's not the consensus number two across all sites. In fact, all sites don't even have a consensus number one.
Correct, I completly forgot about 247 for some odd reason. He is currently ranked 9th overall on their site.
is he another music major like the db from last year who committed to usc?
does the music school have a major in rap performance?
Apparently wants to be a surgeon, IIRC. Selfishly (lol) I really want him to just not go see Stanford. Yet, my real self wants all people to have every opportunity to see and evaluate anything and everything so if he visits there and it hurts our chances, so be it. Yet, Michigan is no slouch on the acadmic side as we all know. Just heard he was basically a Stanford lock before he started talking with our staff and visited. Would be happy for the kid either way but would suck to lose a player of his personality and talent due to a Stanford visit reminding him. I even have an odd feeling that he could commit there or right after without coming here again. Just an odd feeling I have. This is a game changing player! This kid can play day 1 and play well at about 6 different positions. Said a lot but my old HS played Woodson when he was a Senior as Freemont and Peppers is truly the most versitile kid we have a legit shit at since Woodson, IMO.
But the music school does have the Performing Arts & Tech Program
The music theory & piano performance requirements are pretty rough on a non-formally trained musician (reading music and all, if you can't do it you're behind the ball). But if he's a smart kid it's doable.
Seems like he is working hard . . . I will follow him either way now!
Seems like every time a good kid is considering Michigan, many on this blog say "awesome kid, I will follow and root for him wherever he goes." Will you really? Are you going to start following Stanford's team to see how he is doing? How many people here who said they would follow recruit xyz if they didn't go to Michigan actually kept up with that?
Not singling you out, but I think that this sounds silly. It's one thing to say that he sounds like a good kid and you wish him well wherever he goes, but to say that you will personally be rooting for him on another team just sounds like fluff.
Not the team but I'd wish him personal success. REALLY. Is that hard to believe that one human being would wish well for another even after he didn't do what we'd selfishly like him to do with his life?!? I feel bad for those that don't.
"I'm serious about schoolwork so when things start affecting that it's time to cut that part of it off. I just want to focus on keeping my grades up and getting my team a national championship."
I really do like his attitude towards this - he seems very focused on "doing", if you will, and the present and wants to do just as well now as he hopes to do in the future, both academically and athletically. It seems like he has found a nice balance for himself now, a grounded approach which will definitely help him in both arenas later.
It's nice when prospective Michigan players are guys who you'd like no matter their team. Both football and MBB seem to recruit a lot of said dudes.
Reminds me a lot of Curren$y.
Sounds like an early (before anyone knew who he was) Wale beat, but with a little worse lyricism.
Worse lyrics than wale, he must be a terrible rapper. Definitely no Ghostface Killah.
The kid is talented, but I hate this because it's going to be very hard for him to resist the "Snoop close:" "Come play at USC and I'll use my connections to get you a recording contract."
This does raise a question, though. How many of the players Snoop closed actually recorded an album, or even a single in a professional studio?
He plans on committing in June and wants to visit Stanford before then, no visits planned for USC.
USC isn't a threat in his recruitment, so I'd say it'll be very easy for him to resis the "Snoop close."
I agree that the blog was clearly a move to gather more attention for his music career by leveraging his position as one of the nations top football recruits. As a musician with nothing to leverage for publicity, I can't blame him. Particularly since isn't seem to be doing music to stay in the public eye after his athletic relevancy; the vast majority of both his music and athletic careers are ahead of him.
I also like the tune. It doesn't sound like self-paraody or patronizing to his fans; he sounds like a young rapper fighting for his slice of the pie. That's cool. That's genuine. And I hope it works out for him if football isn't all he dreamed it could be. Two risky career choices; to be sure, but he seems reasonably well equipted to roll with either.
I think he likes the media atttention, and that sorta thing, but that he's getting sick of talking to coaches and schools that he knows he won't fit in at. He wants world-class academics; particularly in the music program, and world-class football. It's pretty easy to see why his decision will probably come down to Michigan vs Stanford. For any kid making that decision I have the deepest respect; you really can't do better either way.
I wonder if any staff will (or has) go the Oklahoma:Adrian Peterson route and visit the Father in prison? Not joking at all. Peterson said that it was THE single thing that put Oklahoma over the top. Did it without even asking Adrian but he liked it. I wonder if a staff has or will and, if so, how he would react to that.
I believe I read that Jabrill's dad won't let Jabrill visit him in prison; doesn't want him to see it. So I guess it wound go over well in the family.
I don't think Adrian ever went to see his Dad while in prison but contacted with him by phone like Jabrill. Oklahoma didn't ask the family or Dad, they just went as they knew Adrian loved his Dad regardless. I see that as rolling the dice and with Adrian it worked. I wonder how often this happens and how others react is all. More a question of ethics and boundries, really.
So we get an awesome football player and rapper repping the U of M! Hail!
This kid is a beast. You would also help our WRs out a lot during practice. I thought it was weird though that he didnt mention anything about being a orthopedic surgeon. He takes great pride in his song writing thats for sure.
I thought the same thing.
Having recruits all into football is great, but I love seeing the guys like Jabrill who are also interested in academics and other pursuits as well and seem mature beyond their years.. I hope he selects Michigan, but he'll be easy to root for no matter what school he chooses.
