J. Lewis Question
Wondering if someone with a little more knowledge than I could possibly enlighten me and others on Lewis' draft potential (this year or next). I believe he has the skill to play in the NFL but I'm not sure I've seen a corner that small, specificaly weight wise. I did a little research on corners drafted in past few years and for reference Jourdan Lewis is listed at 5'10 176 on mgoblue.com. Obviously, the potential is there to add more weight but as a junior I'm not sure how likely that is.
2015: 25 corners drafted, 1 under 180 lbs- Senquez Golson (5'9, 176 Round 2 pick 24)
2014: 35 corners drafted, 1 under 180 lbs- Aaron Colvin (5'11, 177 Round 4 pick 14)
2013: 30 corners drafted, 0 under 180 lbs
Edit: in light of seeing this today

He's got two years to bulk up. Either way, getting into the league is a big accomplishment. He would need a lot more than just size.
October 6th, 2015 at 7:29 PM ^
HE'S TOO SMALL! HE'LL NEVER MAKE IT! YOU HEAR ME NFL SCOUTS AND GM'S?
October 6th, 2015 at 7:31 PM ^
No you got it wrong, he will be worthy of a 1st round pick.....after his senior year, and he adds 10 more lbs.
October 6th, 2015 at 7:42 PM ^
Come on, Gucc, you know 1st round for a small DB is a stretch! Now calm down before this turns into another Pookie Loc situation.
October 6th, 2015 at 10:18 PM ^
Jason Verett is 5-9, 178 pounds and went in the first round last year.
October 7th, 2015 at 6:13 AM ^
Tyrann Mathieu, a player I was begging for the Lions to draft, is 5'9" 186 lbs and he's part of one of the best DB tandems in the league right now. Size seldom matters when you know how to play football at an extremely high level. I'm not comparing the 2 other than in size. Their playing styles certainly differ. Peppers is more of a Mathieu's type stylistically.

Hate this, even when it's a joke. "Please don't go" pretty much translates to "Don't care about these guys as people."
October 6th, 2015 at 7:39 PM ^
nah u taking it too far. If he leaves after this year, 99.9% of people on this board will root for him. We just like seeing him in the UM uniform
October 6th, 2015 at 7:44 PM ^
This isn't a joke. He BETTER NOT leave.
October 6th, 2015 at 7:47 PM ^
You bastard you.
October 6th, 2015 at 8:01 PM ^
If Lewis were to leave after playing like he has so far this year, I don't think any reasonable UM fan would blame them. At his size, you can't play much better than he has. I really don't think that he can improve his draft stock very much from his Jr year to his Sr yr., and honestly that's going to do nothing but benefit us. Right now we have an elite cover corner who isn't being projected very high in the NFL draft... This is a GOOD thing.

Right but with all the early entry in the basketball program and not getting to enjoy anymore than half their careers I think we can be a bit selfish and enjoy an elite football player all the way out to their senior years.
Calhoun and Cook (and Conklin) all were eligible to leave last year and went back. Let's have some of that good fortune.
Again I think it is sort of moot on Lewis as he is not projecting to be a top 3 rounder right now.
October 6th, 2015 at 7:30 PM ^
He has the ball skills and awareness for the next level. He's likely not going to grow (much), so he's probably going to have a ceiling of a slot corner or dime guy in my opinion. I can see him having a very good career as a situational guy.
October 6th, 2015 at 7:30 PM ^
He is too short. No need for the NFL to pay attention to him this year.

I know you're kidding, but I I think we can all agree: his height is not the main issue.

JD is the best in the country right now...hopefully the NFL hates his size cuz he'd be the best corner in this draft

But I think your research indicates it would be tough for Lewis to be drafted high. However he has serious cover skills and has shown he isn't afraid to go up against big receivers. So basically I have no idea but I would love to see him get a chance

I'm sure Harbaugh will take him with the Colts 1st round pick.
October 6th, 2015 at 7:36 PM ^
Selfishly I hope his small stature requires him to come back next year to prove to the NFL he's ready but in my mind he's gone after this year. He's playing at such a high level, and has shown the ability to cover players considerably bigger than himself that I don't think the questions about his size will hurt his draft stock much.
October 6th, 2015 at 7:38 PM ^
hes not as short as i once thought. If he measures 5'10 like its listed then hes a first rd talent. Weight is not a big deal. He can gain a few pds
October 6th, 2015 at 7:41 PM ^
I looked at a lot of mock boards last week and he is not even listed in the 7th round etc. I think his size will work against him a bit. I am glad for us. I am sure he will get drafted mid rounds at least after his senior year if this continues.
p.s. these boards even have the Lyons and Countess of the world on them.
October 6th, 2015 at 7:43 PM ^
Do those mock boards automatically consider guys with eligibility remaining?
October 6th, 2015 at 7:45 PM ^
them gotta be old boards. Lyons cant even beat out dymonte
October 6th, 2015 at 7:48 PM ^
That's one of the nice things about college players who are undersized for the pros, you are less likely to lose them early and they can be just as good or better in college despite being too small. The NFL/NBA loves size and athleticism even if the players haven't played the best on the field. So a guy with an NFL/NBA body is probably gone before they reach their potential or you get 1 great year with them while you can get 2-3 good years with a player who doesn't have elite measurables.
October 6th, 2015 at 7:49 PM ^
Except.....Trey Burke.
October 6th, 2015 at 8:01 PM ^
I agree. NFL drafts a lot on physical future as well - lots of MSU guys who well in college have not been doing well in the league on defense because they are not elite athletes. But very productive college guys.
Same with NBA. If Walton was 6'4 you have worries - he is 6'0 (maybe!) so unless you are once in a decade player you stay. Its why a phenom like Shabazz Napier plays 4 years at Uconn. 3 inches taller they'd want him after his so year.
J Lewis is an excellent college CB and might be a guy you nickel and can play against a slot guy in the NFL. You dont usually do that sort of guy in the first 2-3 roujnds unless you are a Lions GM. That guy from KSU who torched Blake in the bowl. Tyler Lockett - that is the sort of guy in the NFL you can put a Lewis on.
Unfort for UM fans we are now only taking 6'ish HS kids @ CB so we might lose some early in the future!
And I agree on scratching my heads on these boards for Lyons and Countess. CBS has Lyons in the 4th - uhhhh
October 6th, 2015 at 8:31 PM ^
Yeah, that's one of the nice things about Yogi Ferrell for Indiana and something I'm looking forward to with Simpson at PG. And the coaches aren't just going after large CBs, they don't have the same focus on size that Hoke had. Lavert Hill and Chris Brown are just 2 of the many CBs under 6' that the coaches have gone after.
October 6th, 2015 at 8:50 PM ^
You realize Lewis was recruited by Hoke right?

5'9" explosive corner out of UGA...played nickel for the Eagles for a few years, probably should have started on the outside, ended up getting traded to the Steelers this year.
Plenty of 5'10" corners have been successful. Asante Samuel, Cortland Finnegan (who's like 5'8"), Antoine Winfield...I'm legitimately worried about Lewis early entry. The NFL should be looking at him if they know how to do their jobs.
October 6th, 2015 at 11:58 PM ^
Darrel green is one of the greatest corners to ever play and he was probably about 5'8 170 soaking wet out of college. Played 20 years.
October 7th, 2015 at 10:27 AM ^
He's also like one off the fastest humans to ever walk the planet.
October 6th, 2015 at 7:51 PM ^
If these draft projections have Lyons and countess going above Lewis, then they haven't watched any of them play. Simple as that.

Countess is actually pretty good as long as he isn't forced to be a man to man lockdown corner. He is definitely an NFL prospect for teams that favor zone coverage.
October 6th, 2015 at 8:32 PM ^
I'm sorry, but he's wasn't as good as Lewis here, he isn't at Auburn, and it's not even close.

I have a cool story bro moment involving Green. So he went to my church when I was growing up and my mom and his wife were friends. I was at his house, I was probably 9 years old, one day playing him in Super Tecmo Bowl...he picked the Raiders, I chose the Skins. He's up 5, last play of the game, he throws a deep pass, I pick it off...with HIM, and house it for the win. I still give him a hard time for not trusting his teammates more!

October 6th, 2015 at 8:02 PM ^
Yep awesome player. I think he was the fastest guy in the league for half a decade to boot.
October 6th, 2015 at 8:12 PM ^
Height is not the issue its his weight
October 6th, 2015 at 7:43 PM ^
In terms of stature he is a close comparable to Brandon Flowers (but much different skillset as Flowers is a zone corner that can't press). I don't think Lewis will ever be a first round pick because of his size. If he declares this year he should go somewhere in the second round and if he performs well will get that second contract quickly.
