I must say that I'm not a fan of defacing anything, much less the Magic Johnson statue at MSU honoring the 1979 NCAA National Champion. It seems very petty and beneath the dignity of the University of Michigan... it's more like something that an MSU fan would do... or Dave Brandon.

occasionally tossing some maize and blue paint on the sparty statue or green paint on the rock is all in good fun. but it should stop there as far as vandalizm goes.
i sure wouldn't want to see green paint on UM stadium or the Bo statue. i would hate to see this escalate.

I mean, he's only a local kid who went to the local university, won a national title in the most watched finals ever, was the iconic NBA guy before Jordan, played and excelled at every position, remains a top-10 all time basketball player 30 years on, was instrumental in the normalization of HIV, and has continued to engage in mid-Michigan as a highly successful businessman post-NBA-career.
Like, who would ever put a statue of a guy like that on his university campus? Hell, I want to go dump paint all over it right now, just thinking about that!

Personally, I don't care for the fad of memorializing sports figures with statues, and even moreso when they're still alive. We've already elevated sports to borderline unhealthy levels of importance, and this kind of thing reinforces that.
For that matter I'm not in love with the Bo statue either. Now, I love Bo. But he'd be the first to remind everyone that Michigan was a great program before him, and would be one after, too.
