IU Snowflakes

Just a pathetic effort on all ends... IU wanted to hand it to us in the first half turning the ball over on every possession, but there was no effort made to get guys open. Nobody stepped up with Stauskas being held in check, and the offense was just stagnant.  However, I think this team needed a little wake up call after being on top of the world for the last two weeks. Frustrating but not the end. Pick it up for Nebraska and Iowa on Saturday.

Good lord that was annoying.

Anyway, not a big deal. There was no way M was going to run the conference table. We have an improving NEB team coming to Crisler and then two tough road games back-to-back in Iowa and Ohio, so beating NEB is essential.

I agree with each of your points. I was just not expecting the conference winning streak to end today, though. They should have been able to extend that a couple more games.
This loss definitely adds pressure to the rest of their conference slate.
This was a game that they should not have lost.

It wasn't just that he was shutdown. The fire we're used to seeing from him wasn't there today and he seemed lethargic. Not to speculate but there may have been something going on with Stauskas we aren't aware of.

Right on, LG.   We sucked, no doubt about it.  But IU played well defensively, and you cannot count on Stauskas to perform flawlessly every game.   It just won't happen.   You hope that others will fill in the void when your studs get shut down, but it didn't happen today.

GRIII disappeared, again.

GRIII disappeared, again. Stauskas got frustrated and just stood in the corner for much of the 2nd half.  Missed free throws. And we couldn't get a hand up against Yogi behind the arc.

Levert could'nt raise his hands above his friggin hip.  He is a terrible perimeter defender.  Between that and his turnovers, he is one who I'd like to see less minutes while Irvin gets more.  The levert is incredible because he scores meme needs to die. He's a liability in too many areas.

Tough game to watch but that's basketball in the B1G. Gotta regroup and play like the team we all know they are. Hats off to Yogi. Hell of a game on his end.

Sigh, that was a lackluster effort....I was afraid of the home-cooking Indiana will get, but the refs weren't  the deciding factor (the refs weren't great, but still...) .

Oh well, hoping for a better showing against Nebraska the next game.

It may talent-wise

It may talent-wise, but Irvin was actually noticeable on the court... The only times I noticed GRIII were when he took poor and highly contested jumpers.

That being said, GRIII is obviously the better player and should stay in the rotation, but it is necessary that he regains the form he was in a couple games ago.

Holy shit I know its the cool

Holy shit I know its the cool thing to do on this blog to bash GRIII for not showing up but check the stats.  He's our second leading scorer at over 13 points a game, probably our best one on one perimeter defender, is shotting almost 50% from the floor, and averages over 4 rebounds a game which is also second on the team and more than morgan averages.  I get frustrated too because he hasnt devolped the ability to beat people off the dribble yet because nobody respects him as a three point shooter, but lol at thinking irvin would surpass that overall production because he hit a few threes and you noticed it.

This.  Plus little 3 point production from the good guys.  We were bound to have a few stinkers from behind the 3 point line, but it hurts more when a struggling Tom Crean team does it to you.

Also, make FT's.

EDIT:   Wrong response.  My bad.

Not a hard game to remedy.
Make free throws, limit turnovers, and get the ball out of LeVert's hands, and into Stauskas'. We still control our destiny. Beat Nebraska, Go Blue!

1) Stauskus totally gave up

1) Stauskus totally gave up getting his when they didn't come easy. Towards the end, I kept wanting him to shoot on a switch, but he continually deferred. Weak. I would expect small fast gaurds on Stauskus from here on out until he can beat it.

2) GR3 has no killer instinct, which shows on rebound opportunities, Defense, etc. Can only dunk. Turns the ball over when he does try to attack the rim.

3) Walton is a keeper.

4) Bad boxing out, which continues that trend this year.

5) Morgan plays incredibly unselfish BBall, but we needed those FTs down the stretch.

Overall, bad effort game. I liked the late switch to the 1-3-1 zone, but it hurts to lose to a team basically composed of one player

You are exactly right about

You are exactly right about Nik.  He gave in and allowed the defense to take him out of the game.  This is where many missed what Hardaway did last season...he fought like hell to get his touches and demanded the defense continue to react to him which opened up other shots.

Let's just get these out of

Let's just get these out of the way so we don't have to see them for 300 posts:

- This team is so overrated. They shouldn't even be in the top 25.

- I hope GR3 goes to the NBA this year.  He's a joke.

- Walton will never be Burke.

- This is the worst free throw shooting team in the history of the world.

- Michigan is still miles behind Michigan State.

Seriously, think about your angry and irrational posts before tossing them out there for the world to see.

Ummm

-This team is definitely top 25 caliber... They were due for a let down game. I mean this is college basketball, and this team wasn't meant to go 40-0.

-I agree GR3 really disappears, and he needs to regain his form that he had a couple games ago

-I've seen flashes of Burke in Walton ever since Wisconsin. He is really gaining a three point shot, but needs to get much better on his drives to the basket.  However, he is still not Trey Burke, as there will NEVER be another exact copy of Trey.

-Ummmm worse than UNC who cannot hit 50% of their free throws even at home??? Worse than last season's team that couldn't hit the front end of a one-one when it mattered???

-80-75 earlier this season at Breslin

No, we are tied.  Both teams are 8-1 in conference.

There is no tie-breakers for the reg. season title- if there are teams with the same record and the end of the season, there are co-champions.

Awful offensive gameplan and

Awful offensive gameplan and play. Defense was fine. Can't do anything about Yogi going off (except maybe deny him the ball just a bit late in the shot clock). Levert needs to be reigned in big time on offense. Dribbles the air out of the ball and dominates too many possessions when it was possible to feed Stauskas or kick it back out to Walton.

Honest question, why does

Honest question, why does everybody dog LeVert? He was the only one creating on offense, and had to carry the load since Nik wasn't moving to get open and GR3 can't create for himself either.

I understand Open Threads can be overly dramatic but the LeVert hate reaches critical levels more often than not.

He created more poor shots

He created more poor shots only for himself or turnovers than he did offense today. I couldn't be happier for Caris and his development. He is a great player when he plays within the offense. Today he tried to be the offense and rarely involved others. He's not ready to be THE guy. He also refused to feed the ball to Stauskas a couple times early when he was open (seems unwilling to make anything but an easy pass).

Indiana chose to let Michigan

Indiana chose to let Michigan have Caris. They played deny on Stauskas and they let GR3 have the outside. What ticks me off is that they couldn't take advantage of the overly strong deny on Stauskas with some back door cuts. GR3 is what he is at this point, very limited outside shot and a shaky handle but very athletic.
Ultimately it's up to the players and coaches to find a combination that will work. Indiana gave Michigan Caris and Caris decided that meant he should do all the work. As I said before, an all around crap performance.

I think we agree? Caris

I think we agree? Caris deciding he had to go it alone is why I stated he needs to be reigned in big time. Just because teams have a specific game plan to "let" you have certain things, doesn't mean you should put your head down and do only that (that's exactly what the opponent wants). The coaches seemed intent on running our same sets even though Ind was dead set on taking that away. We didn't run Stauskas off a double screen once. People are accusing him of being timid but he really was just playing his role in the Beilein offense while Levert went one on one.

We do agree. The coaches

We do agree. The coaches needed to work with Caris and the game plan. For those (not you) who are dogging Caris and Stauskas, I wanted to convey that there are many factors which impact a game. If a team is playing very aggressive deny defense on the best player, that is not the players fault for not having a big impact in that game. Likewise, if the defense is letting a player have certain opportunities and that player feels he can be successful, you can't really dog the guy for doing what he knows. That's where the coaches need to step in and say, look, I know they are giving you dribble penetration, but then they are collapsing on you so you need to look for this type of pass faster. I wasn't and still am not very eloquent in my ability to communicate this point.

So dumb. Nik spent most of the 2nd half standing. There were at least a dozen possessions on which he didn't look for the ball, and Yogi was helping off him.

He was standing in the corner, which is what the offense calls for.  Would you like to run right over to where Caris is dribbling around and bring a double team with him?  Caris had several opportunities to kick the ball out to Walton and Stauskas and never did - just bulled into the lane and got very few good looks.

Michigan had 45 shot attempts

Michigan had 45 shot attempts and 10 turnovers. That means they had @ 55 possessions. You are upset that on @ 12 of those possessions the play either called for, or Stauskas "chose", to stand in the corner for part of the possession? Assuming you watched the game on CBS, based on the camera angle, you couldn't even see what was going on in one of the two corners most of the game.
Some times the other team plays better and with more energy. Some times the good guys just don't play a good game.

He takes too many isolation shots when he's not a great shooter.  He leads the team in TO's tied with walton who is a freshman point guard, so expected.  He is last in FG % of all starters and all rotation players except Irvin.  He is a pretty bad defender for being 6'7''. His hands are always at his side at the perimeter.  It's a love hate with him but man he is not improving in the areas I listed.

We can never shoot in that fucking arena.

But I agree with the people above who thought there was just way too much 1 on 1 play in this game.  What we got was usually off of ball movement there just... wasn't a lot of it.  That and Ferrell being unconscious is pretty much the story.

I hate Caris isolation plays.

I don't

I don't care about shots not going in, or Yogi going insane. That stuff happens.

What doesn't happen is your team's best player just watching the game. He doesn't deserve excuses: he wasn't "held in check," he just didn't want the ball. He didn't even come out for it on more than half of our possessions, just stood or jogged and watched.

That's awful, and what bothers me way more than the loss. You can bag on GR3, but at least he took it to the basket for the and-1 late. Nik ... just watched.

He needs to be chewed out if he wasn't sick or injured.

He did lose aggressiveness at

He did lose aggressiveness at times in both halves, but his teammates also did a terrible job getting him the ball when he was open. Stauskas also played within the offense and didn't force things except one deep three late in the shot clock. This team (and the coaches) seem clueless on how to get Stauskas the ball when he's being denied or post him up when he has midget Yogi on him (only did it once and stauskas missed a great shot).

I know he makes great plays, but his sloppy handle always shows up right when Michigan needs a basket to stop the bleeding or get some momentum going. Drives me nuts. It seems to happen a few times a game and I feel like it'll cost them in March.

Nothing

Nothing to replicate. Yogi just played very basic ball denial, and Nik didn't work. Half the time he didn't even force Yogi to deny him, he just stood there and didn't look for the ball, even when the dribble was coming towards him and it's his responsibility to come to it.

Either Nik fixes it or he doesn't, but this one was more terrible offense than great defensive gameplanning.

Yes, Stauskas stunk it up and GRIII did his usual job of being one of the most overrated players in the NCAA, but let's not forget about Horford! Not a ton of minutes, but he was unusually worthless in those minutes: no points, no rebounds but a couple fouls.

Agree

Nik and Glenn stood around most of the game. Walton and LeVert were the only ones trying to score.

Spike could get more minutes

Spike could get more minutes yes, but he's still a liability defensively, and I'm not sure Irvin is more than just a gunner at the moment.

The fact that he is the only person other than Stauskas that can take anyone off the dribble?

Eh

I always say the one thing you can't control in basketball is shooting. Some days you are on, some you are off. If UM had hit 3-4 more shots, the offense wouldn't have looked so bad, and more options would open. Switch Nik's shooting with Yogi's and we have a 15 point win. It happens. Next.

I got 4 things

1.  There are two peaks to every successful basketball season.  Recall last year, we went through a very problematic period late in Big Ten play.  We are not a 32-5 type of team.  I think we are a contender, but it is going to be from a 3 or 4 seed (just like last year), not a 1 or a 2.  The Big Ten is still very much in play, but we were going to come back down to earth some time.  The sky is not falling at all, and this game is not an issue (except in the case of #3 below).

2.  Teams are overplaying Nik like crazy.  It has been evident since the Iowa game, and I am surprised that JB has not found a counter yet.  The backdoor does not seem to be there (I can't really figure out why), but I really think that some double screen baseline action would at least get him some looks inside the 3 point line.  He is too good of a player to only operate from one set.  I think work will be put in to get him the ball in more that one scoring position.  He is dynamic but he is too easy to defend right now.

3.  If that is all we are going to get from GR 3 our ceiling is the Sweet 16.  He has got to step up.

4.  Michigan and Bloomington do not get along.  F Assembly Hall.

I'm really never surprised when guys like Crean rub it in.  He comes from the Tom Izzo coaching tree, the same guy who was throwing alley-oops up something like 25 points.

Whatever

You want them to stop shooting when the outcome is in doubt? Make your shots. Work harder to get free when you're being overplayed. Make the free throws. "Cardinal sin"? Seriously? The cardinal sins are things like not working hard enough or taking cheap shot fouls (like what you seem to be proposing here).

The best revenge is to be the one that wins the game and let the other fans whine.

The northwestern wildcats have a winning percentage in assembly hall that is 100 pints higher than that of Michigan. This is absolutely pathetic. Worse than the penn state loss last year. When is GRIII going to play well?

Yeah that's just...... No.

Yeah that's just...... No. There is no comparison to losing to a team that was one of the worst in the major conferences when you have a 15 point lead late in the second half. Very few losses are going to compare to that.

I don't believe in wake up calls. You only get better by winning. As shitty as we played, If we make our freethrows, we would have won.

Refs were there usual horrid selves. One play that sticks out is when they gave the ball to IU after it went out of bounds off of Yogi. Yogi the hit a three and changed the game.

Team was due for a loss, and

Team was due for a loss, and maybe this re-focuses after that gauntlet.  When one basket seems to have a lid on and the other team has a guy who can't seem to miss, games like this happen.  I do think games like thus should silence some of the Stauskas is going pro talk, because NBA GMs are going to notice that he's had trouble getting his shot against certain teams, and all seem to apply the same general principle of denying the initial pass and facing him up throughout the possession.

Sadly, I think the past couple of games have shown the issues with GRIII as well; for all the athleticism, he just can't seem to get his shot off.  He has rudimentary elements of a game, but right now he's all jumping and little else.

This may temper the NCAA seeding a bit, but teams have been losing at a breakneck speed, and at some point UM was due to have a horrible game shooting.  That said, they kept it close against a quality opponent on the road, so all is not lost.

This team will bounce back, and quickly. This was Stauskas vs. Duke part 2, and we all know what he has done between now and then.

I remember an equally frustrating weekend afternoon game last year (Wisconsin) and the guys rallied after that. Payback for Indiana in a big way when they come to AA.

The sky isn't falling. We still control our own destiny. Go Blue.

I don't disagree...but this game was lost based on one match up only, Ferrell vs Stauskas. The rest of Indiana played poorly. Really just a bunch of Sheehey's with some timely shooting and offensive boards.

Beilein needs to get more creative in freeing Nik up, because teams are definitely going to watch this film and try to replicate.

I would rather have an off

I would rather have an off day at this point in the year then later on at a more crucial date. Have to rebound against Nebraska and take it one game at a time. I still think this is a good team but just can't let Indiana beat us twice. They were the more desparate team now its our turn to get back on track. This next game at home is absolutely crucial and Nebraska won't just give it to us but Michigan has a great chance.

Not a lot of fight today. Seemed like IU had more desire. I understand Nik will have a tougher time occasionally, but he got absolutely shut down. That shouldn't happen.

Missed free throws also prevented a real shot at winning. Sucks.

You don't win when you can't

You don't win when you can't shoot and IU's best player plays out of his mind. The 16 for 17 in assembly hall may have played into it along with Indiana needing a win here.

These things happen and we always knew we were going to lose a game or two just inexplicably. As long as this doesn't turn into a long term thing the team is fine. I agree Robinson needs to figure it out.

This should end the comparisons to last years team. This year, we have now lost to a team that lost to northwestern and to fucking Charlotte. Trey Burke could have beaten either of those teams by himself. We are good this year, but far from great

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, last year's team lost to Penn State, which is still one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history considering the difference in their kenpom rankings.

Charlotte is a run of the mill bad loss. This is fucking Indiana at Assembly. And, by the way, Northwestern is 4th in the conference.

Look, I don't think this team is as good as last year's, but this still isn't as bad a loss as PSU last year.  Also, five Big Ten teams have lost to Northwestern, so it's not quite the barometer of crappiness you think.

Dude...just stop

A Trey Burke team, plus THJ, plus McGary, went into State Colllege last year against a horrific Penn State team and lost.  The B1G regular season was on the line.  It was a huge game.  And we lost.  Hostile crowds, rigors of travel, etc. will bite a team in the ass at least a few times a year.

So we lost to what we all thought was mediocre Indiana team today.   Your transitive property Northwestern shtick has played out.   And in case you haven't noticed, Northwestern has beaten a few teams on the road in recent weeks.

By the way

By the way, PLEASE don't believe the narrative that's about to come out - "Yogi shut down Stauskas, Crean showed the way to beat Michigan's offense."

Nik shut himself down. He's the key to everything in this offense, and when he chooses not to participate, it becomes Caris doing whatever, because no one else wants to or can.

Ended today, we would still be the #1 seed in the BTT. Obviously a win would've been nice, but if you actually thought 18-0 or 17-1 in conference were in play, you're kidding yourself. Off shooting night coupled with Ferrell en fuego. Happens.

I love Beilein, but this game

I love Beilein, but this game is on him. He didn't make the right offensive adjustments and his defensive adjustments were wrong.

On offense, he should have noticed right away that Sheehey was guarding out 5 while Vonley was on Robinson. He should have put Horford in for Morgan (who did have a solid game minus the FTs), because Horford has a much better post game than Morgan. This would have caused either a switch of defensive philosophy by Crean or someone from the top helping out by scrapping down low. If he choose the later option, it would have opened up the 3 ball  amd lanes to penetrate with ball movement.

Even without that, the offense started struggling with limited movement as Ferrell sticking on Stauskas. The answer for this is not more iso, which let the offense get very stagnant, but instead even more movement. Then set up the overplay with backdoor cuts to the basket.

Also I was unhappy with Beilein's defensive choose of going to the 1-3-1. Man-to-man was working great, Indiana had a lot of very crappy positions that Ferrell bailed them out on with 3s at the buzzer. Just because they were going in, doesn't mean it was a good offensive possession for Indiana. Instead, the 1-3-1 allowed Indiana to have better ball movement and be able to get into the paint, which they were not able to in man. The defensive was good this game until he changed it. A made shot =/= bad defense.

In the end though, it was just one game and Michigan will move on with hopefully lessons learned after a film session. The Big Ten title still goes through Crisler. Hopefully Robinson decides to wake-up.

I agree that Horford would

I agree that Horford would have been a better option in the post against Sheehey. However, Horford has no chance to stay with Vonleh. He probably would have fouled out and given up about 15 points. Coach B would have had to trade offense for defense. We really, really missed McGary.

I agree that Morgan was a much better defensive match-up on Vonleh, but we were not able to generate anything on offense while Indiana wasn't really looking too much for Vonleh on the inside. Sometimes you just need to test it out for a couple possessions to get momentum back.

It was a lose-lose for Coach

It was a lose-lose for Coach B. When Horford tried to guard Vonleh, he went right around him and drew the foul. He went right back to Morgan after that. I think he knew Horford was on the fast track to foul out if he left him in. It would have been a nightmare for Horford to come out and defend the screens for Yogi. JH just can't move his feet. It's frustrating, but at this point you can't expect more out of Jon/Jordan. We know what they are. They give great effort but have low ceilings.

The 1-3-1 stopped Indiana's

The 1-3-1 stopped Indiana's scoring.  Ferrell lit us up in man-man.  Yea they got a few buckets/fouls against the 1-3-1 but overall that's when they slowed and we didn't take advantage by scoring off of stops/turnovers.

He lit us up when he was

He lit us up when he was forced to take a 3 with under 2 seconds left on the shot clock because that was their only offensive option without getting a shot clock violation. Maybe it was just my eyes, but I would be billing to bet the PPP of 1-3-1 vs Man-to-man was higher if you discount the forced 3s (which is good defense IMO) at the end of the shot clock.

The only turnover I can remember the 1-3-1 forcing was 1 shot clock violation. This also happened in man-to-man but it was harder to throw up a deperation 3 against the 1-3-1. But this opened up a lot of driving lanes and instead led to a lot more drives and fouls against Michigan. Just look at the number of fouls and FT attempts for Indiana in the first vs second half.

I believe all, or almost all,

I believe all, or almost all, of his threes came against man-to-man.  In the second half, they also started to get a lot of penetration against and our defensive rebounding fell apart.  I definitely thought at the time that we needed to try something different defensively.  The game was on the verge of slipping away by the time we went to zone.

They did, but the 3s were not

They did, but the 3s were not setup by good offense. They came off a stalled Indiana offensive possession with the shot clock under 5 seconds and Ferrell was forced to shot a contested 3 or else it would be a turnover. This is very good defense and exactly what you want the offense to do. It was just one of those days where anything he put up happened to go in.

The only other 3 from him I can remember (I'm sure there were others), was after an offensive rebound and the D was scrambling. That would happen against any type of D formation though.

As far as giving up offensive rebounds, that is the major knock of zone defenses. It is a scramble to find a man to box out.

I thought it was a panic move to go to the 1-3-1 just because Indiana was scoring. Michigan had very good defensive possessions in the man-to-man that didn't work out because sometimes that just the way the ball bounces. If someone did a UFR of the defensive possessions, I believe the man-to-man vs 1-3-1 would grade out much, much better.

Not sure how you can say that

Not sure how you can say that - our man to man looked pretty bad in the second half (I think only two of his seven 3-pointers came at the end of the clock).  The zone wasn't fantastic either, but it was worth a shot.

Where to start ...
  • Crean completely out-coached Beilein. I didn't think it was possible. Crean showed no respect for our ability to score inside, and it won him the game. He knew Stauskas wouldn't post-up Yogi, and he knew Morgan/Horford wouldn't be looking to score even with Sheehey guarding them in the post. Crean just made the blueprint on how to defend Michigan.
  • This is the first game we truly missed McGary. It allowed Crean to go small in the post defensively. If he tried that gameplan with McGary, Mitch would have scored 20+.
  • GR3 is lost. Those long 2's he kept chucking were basically turnovers. Right now he's the 4th option on offense after Nik, Caris, and Derrick.
  • Coach B waited waaaay too long to go to the 1-3-1. I don't know why he tried the 2-3 before trying the 1-3-1. All of Yogi's effectiveness was generated around the top of the key. The 1-3-1 took care of that, and forced the ball into the corners.
  • Nik has a rough road ahead of him. Harris and Ferrell showed how to defend him. Deny him the ball, and get into him before he gets his turned towards the basket. He doesn't have the ability that LeVert does to get around defenders. His long, swooping dribbles are only effective when he can turn the corner and get going towards the basket. Defenders are going to be face guarding him all season.
  • Horford and Morgan have no post game. They never have, and they never will. It was painful to watch. They combined for 5 points with 6-7 200lb Will Sheehey guarding them. That's going to be embarrassing to watch when they see the film.

Most of all, this will probably be the game the costs us an opportunity to win a B1G Championship. We couldn't afford to slip up against the bottom-half of the conference. Michigan State has handled their business. We're almost certainly going to have to sweep MSU to have a chance now.

If Harris showed how to guard

If Harris showed how to guard him, I hope every team we play gaurds him the exact same way. He had 19 points on 7 of 12 shooting.

Harris played great defense

Harris played great defense on Nik. You're crazy if you think differently. It is ok to give an opponent some credit when they play well.

Nik scored 19 because he was on from 3. It happends when you play shooters (see Yogi Ferrell). Harris had 3 steals which led to 3 easy buckets, and didn't let Nik get 1 FT attempt.

The change that Crean made was putting Sheehey on our 5. That way when our 5 set the screen for Nik, Sheehey could switch, as opposed to a big man who would have trouble stepping out on Nik. Nik's 3's against MSU came on the switch or on transition. It definitely wasn't Harris' fault. That kid can play some serious ball on both ends.

Agreed that this probably cost us the conference. This Indiana team was a bad team, and we can't afford to lose to bad teams with Iowa, Wisconsin, MSU, and OSU still on the schedule.

IU is tied with OSU and

IU is tied with OSU and Wisconsin in the standings.  I don't think IU is that good, but the other two really haven't shown much, either.

I'm still pretty content to be tied for first with the one remaining MSU game in our building.  MSU still has to play at Michigan, at Wisconsin, at OSU and at home vs Iowa - not really any easier of a schedule.

Re: the conference

Most people thought that after the loss to purdue at home in 2011-12.

Lol oops

Let's not jump to conclusions. Michigan was a missed tip-in away from repeating last year and they lost to a WINLESS PSU team.

Let the season play out.

It amazes me that Glenn is the one getting shit for being lackadasical and asleep. That's just resorting to lazy tropes.

He wasn't great, but he was significantly better than Nik, who really does deserve shit for just standing around.

What I'm saying is it's fine

What I'm saying is it's fine to talk about why Michigan lost citing lack of effort or lack of execution by a certain player, but when it gets to calling a player garbage or trashing the player then that's too far.

Sometimes an ankle gets worse hours after the original injury, when it starts to swell.  I don't know if that was the case today or not, but it's possible.

Like every said above and

Like everyone said above and what I've reinforced, Michigan was not going to go undefeated in the conference this year.

Not in this day and age where EVERY game is tough and there are no "gimme games".

At least half the top 10 lost this weekend. Just weird.

Oh and by the way, Michigan is still in first place in the B1G. They would also get the 1 seed in the B1G Tournament if the season ended today.

We took IU's best shot.  At home, with Yogi calling out his squad after the last loss.  They don't lack talent and Yogi played out of his mind.  Sure, we could have gave a better effort and had better execution, but I'm not necessarily disappointed with the game.  Caris, Walton, and Irvin played very hard.  Stauskas was neutralized (lingering ankle issues?).  GRIII didn't play his best game, but he did try to ramp up his effort in the "fourth quarter."

We just got beat today.  Hats off to Yogi Ferrell.  8-1 in the Big Ten.  On to the next one.

There is no lingering ankle injury. he played fine against Purdue. Stop with the excuses for him. Even Raftery tried to make an excuse like he wasn't feeling well. Ferrell took him out of the game defensively and had a great shooting game.

I know it's not the end of our big ten champ hopes, but I'd reeeeaaaallllllly like to win in Indiana. When I was at UM, in the late 80's early 90's, they were the team to beat and were our true rivals. Illinois was probably second in that regard.

I thought of that too. Our preview correspondent told us Indiana lays more bricks than an Italian construction crew, and then Yogi the Bear destroys us with 7 of 8 threes.

VERY passive on offense. We should have been attacking the basket. It was there. Nik can go to the hole but I think Yogi got in his head.

It isn't a big deal.  We still control our own destiny, so to speak.  We lost to Penn St. last year and last year turned out okay.  We had an off day, all around, from players to coaches.  Yogi didn't have an off day; if he had a really good and not a phenomenal day we maybe win that game, which, is ridiculous to think.

This team is still a dangerous Tournament team and that is a big deal and what matters most.  Yes, the Big Ten Title is very sought after and I hope we win the shit out of it.  I'm concerned about getting to the Sweet 16 and beyond and today did nothing to change my mind, honestly.  It was just an off day.

Well, we all knew we'd lose a conference game.  Just continue to win at home and snag whatever road games we can and we'll be fine.

I really, really wanted to win at the Kohl Center, Breslin, and Assembly Hall in the same season ... so this is a little disappointing, but hopefully JB can refocus the team following two fairly lackluster performances.

This was a surprisingly bad offensive performance.  Walton played okay individually but he's not able to read defenses yet and truly run the offense.  Spike didn't add anything either.  Too many purposeless passes (by everyone) and no flow.  Nik just disappeared, jogging from spot to spot, no sharp cuts.   Having said that, this is always the way to beat Michigan, even when Burke was there...don't let them get out and run and creat the rhythm they thrive on.

Wonder if Nik and/or other

Wonder if Nik and/or other players were sick.  After all, Walton had the flu last week, maybe it spread?  That might explain some sitting in the corner.  Even so, Nik sitting in the corner allowed Yogi to be relatively "rested" on defense, saving his energy for offense.  Coach B didn't seem to ever be too upset at his players, so I wonder if some of them were sick and he was basically hoping for the best they could give him.

On the bright side:  clearly none of them are NBA-ready.  Maybe that will be cause for smiles next year.

This board is hilarious. Robinson gets blame but Stauskas gets a pass? He did nothing to make Ferrell work on D. And if he was hobbled then it's on Beilein to bench him or him as a player and say Coach I can't go and I'm hurting the team. This board always has an excuse for Staukas. He a good player and good players have bad games. It's ok to call them on it if you can do it to others.

Different

That's comparing apples and oranges in my opinion. Stauskas is our stud, yes we needed him to step up tonight and he didn't so we can obviously blame him for that. But Robinson is now consistently playing like shit in big games. For a guy that thinks he's a first round draft pick he has to be able to dominate a guy like Etherington and he never did that. Nor did he ever dominate valentine or many others. He's just not as good as he should be. His potential is through the roof but he is consistently disappearing in games. Levert has become a better option offensively than Robinson. And even Walton has for that matter.

I disagree. Last year Trey got criticized for his bad play way more than Stauskas ever has. And if you want to compare offensive output, Nik and Caris have the ball in their hands majority of the time. I will continue to say this about Robinson as a player, he needs plays run for him and Beilien doesn't especially in this system. He's not a shooter, he's a slasher and he gets missed a lot on the cut across the lane from wing to box on the opposite side on the court. Even when he looks to post, he rarely gets the ball. People forget that although he plays the 4 in this system, he's only 6'6 and not that big body wise.

this reminded me of Loyola Marymount playing in memorial of Hank Gathers. If they are going to make 40 foot 3's you are going to lose.

Needs to be pointed

Needs to be pointed out:

Jordan Morgan was a beast in the first half and kept us in the game.  Had something like 8 boards in the first half and altered many shots by their big dude.  Everyone will focus on the FTs late (IU missed a couple front ends as well...) but without Morgan, this would have been very ugly.

Strange

I googled "hilariously overblown hyperbole," and it directed me to this thread.

Levert played really well.

Levert played really well. Everyone else sort of disappeared.

It happens sometimes

you can't win em all.

Walton

I agree we need someone to step up a be the guy when Nik has a bad game. Last year it was Tim. I really hope it starts to be Walton. Love a PG who can just take over games.

I think this loss motivates us for Nebraska, and we blow them out.

C'mon anyone really shocked???

My Sunday was ruined or even sad since I knew they would lose. Had they won it would have been a nice cherry on top to end the week. Now it's back to business and focus on winning the Big along with winning a NC

We're at our best when the

We're at our best when the offense runs through Nik. He adds so much as a scorer, but also as a passer, double-team demander, and distraction to other defenders. Today he literally just stood there on 80% of our possessions. On one play it was so bad where LeVert needed to swing it around the perimeter for help, and Nik made zero effort to flash out for the ball. He let his teammates down today. If you're gonna be The Man and throw up three signs and blow kisses, then you need to lead by example and show up every game. It's one thing to be "off" for a game; it's another to not give full effort.

man this place goes nuts

man this place goes nuts sometimes.

- the effort today did not suck. they were within striking distance till the end. not a great indy team, but its not bad, and any conference road game will be tough. plus, yogi is probably all big ten and played all world.

- M was a little overrated. if sparty had that week we just had i'd have been fuming about all the asterisks on those wins. it was a great week, but we were rather fortuitous. i like where this team is headed, but that wisco/iowa/state stretch was something only top 5 teams do. thats not M yet. maybe soon.

- commenters speculated stauskus was sick. i find that rather believable. and this kid is so far from deserving criticism it doesnt matter why he was such a non factor today.

- GRIII couldnt be more frustrating. i doubt i was the only one screaming "where was that all game" when he went hard to the hole with ~2 min for 3 pt play. if beilein can solve this riddle (he will), M is as legit as it gets. i loved morgan's play today. walton is blowing up. lavert and stauskus are A's on the wing, and our bench could be outstanding with horfort, spike, and hopefully irvin makes the leap soon. but its all about GRIII. this team can win a championship this year if he plays at 80% of his potential.

long rant- gist: the teams in great shape, chill out over one loss.

So last year, we lost to Penn

So last year, we lost to Penn State on the road, then later on made the national championship game.

These things happen for reasons that we can debate over till kingdom come... but still, these things happen.

Ferrel

I realize that the offense didn't have the greatest day but the disappointing thing to me about the game is Ferrel.  Going into the game, you knew Ferrel is the one guy who's a decent shooter.  What happens - he goes 7-8 from three.  How do you let Ferrel get that many shots, especially when he's making them?

You answers

Your own question, Ferrell is a damn good player. Couple that with him playing at home, and our history at assembly hall, this seemed like an easy loss for us, seemed pretty predictable to me. Hell, we won 10 in a row...this team still relies waaaaayyyy too much on jump shooters, with that, we could go far in NCAA tourney, or we could lose in first round.
