The school confirmed it to The News, saying Jones "is no longer enrolled" at the university. So the rumors in general were correct. But the specifics remain mysterious -- the school wouldn't comment about the reason for the young man's exit.
Had high hopes for him.
I thought he might start by mid year.
This one hurts.
WTF did he do? I haven't even heard enough to call it a rumor, I've only heard that he is gone.
made a comment on the web that Kellen had ALLEGEDLY, done something, IF proven true, of a potentially criminal nature at worst, and very bad behavior at least.
this seriously blows balls
a shame. I was hoping for some big things from him.
Another RR recruiting casualty strikes again. If we didn't have so many good LB's coming in, I would be a lot more pissed off. At this point I just hope the rumors weren't true and Kellen gets things straightened out for himself.
I really don't know how you can blame RR for this. By all accounts, Kellen seemed like a good kid and I, for one, did not see any of this coming.
In his defense, I don't think he's really blaming RR. I took it more as a reference to the recent meme about RR recruits who have faced misfortunes lately.
I am not blaming him. It's just that RR had some bad luck in this area and it has happened again. Jones seems like a great kid which is why this is a head scratcher.
Gotcha, sorry for getting defensive. I just can't stand when people blame him for stuff that he no longer is responsible for.
Don't blame you, I was a RR guy myself. At times you almost have to laugh at the bad luck he had while at Michigan just to keep from going insane. I hope RR catches a much deserved break at his next stop.
Some douche at the NYP already ripped him. I saw a bit of RR on CBS during signing day coverage and really enjoyed his commentary.
he is just citing the snakebit nature of some of RR's recruits, which is perhaps the kharmic remedy for snake oil.
also, if i understand correctly, kellen and his dad actually recruited michigan more than vice versa.
its a sad situation for ALL parties involved, beyond football
Because blaming RR here is like Obama camp blaming everything on Bush. And Bush people then blaming everything on Clinton.
Recruiting is incredibly difficult, its easy to look at pictures of these kids who look like 30 year olds and forget they are actually 18. Lots of things could cause this, the least of which was RR
Shall I go with trolling or flamebait? So many good choices here.
Rain in the forecast this weekend. RR to blame! More at 11.
EDIT: My bad if you weren't blaming RR and just saying RR had bad luck with recruits.
At a certain point, though, "bad luck" just becomes "bad."
he made about lighting up MSU running backs. He was one of the recruits I really wanted to see in action. I wish him well, and hope he fixes the issues that he has.
Also: Detroit News Article. Confirms Pace is a medical hardship and no longer on the team.
So what the heck was RR thinking? God knows he wasn't spending too much time recruiting talent on defense.
I think if timing had worked out a little better, both he and Zettel would have been blue. Tough to blame either, none of the Hoke awesomeness had really been flushed out by signing day. Zettel really didn't want to play in a 3-3-5, and though he inquired around (supposedly) after GMAT was brought on, by that point his mind had probably settled on PSU.
Hoke visited Fisher's home I think as often as he was allowed. He was certainly a priority, probably THE priority of the staff. But who the hell knew Hoke at that time? Tough to compete with a stable coach (at least at that time) who's just appeared in the NC game, running the offense RR's been selling to Fisher for a year.
Just didn't work out, but "failed to retain" is a little harsh given the circumstances. There was the Flavin kid we contacted but never offered - maybe we should have been hard after him from Day 1 given the lack of depth (he seemed like a fallback plan for Fisher and probably knew it, staying committed to Illinois). But Fisher moving on is a casualty of the CC, not something to put on Hoke.
Nope. It was RR's fault. Pretty easy to see that.
Which is about all you can get unless you're throwing scholarships at projects. A lot of that 2008 class were Carr recruits who stayed. And Rich lost two linemen in 2008 that he inherited before spring. And it's not offset by landing more players along the way there. But we have a huge collection of so-so slot receivers.
OMG, there are holes everywhere. I can (have to) spend 6 scholarships on OL. I hope they work out because after that I'll have to focus elsewhere.
Not that Pace would be a contributor this year but that hurts depth at the present.
Current Schollie linemen=11, 3 of them true frosh.
For the future, my guess is Khoury/Mealer/Barnum will be the centre next season and Jack Miller better be a quick learner because he'd probably be #1 by default come 2013.
P.I.P. Hope he can recover.
Wouldn't really be appropriate to speculate based on what the rumor is but if it's true then it's a legal problem.
Because it's still only a rumor.
Whether it's true or false has yet to be confirmed, and we don't have any of the facts. Given the nature of the allegation, it's best IMO that we just leave it at Kellen messed up and let's see what happens.
Jesus I wish folks would get over themselves. You are on the internet, where rumors are born, live, run wild and free forever. Either adapt to life on this new planet or perish.
Hey, if people want to discuss it, then they will and that's their prerogative.
I just hope they remember that the Jones' family reads the blog and might very well read this thread. Can't speak for anyone else but if my son/daughter was in that situation, I probably wouldn't want to read what a bunch of message board posters not involved in the situation thought. At least until you know, details are actually confirmed...
You're putting words in my mouth. I'm trying to show some consideration for an 18 year old kid who may or may not but probably did make a mistake, whose family might read this. You don't like my stance, that's fine.
I see what you are saying, but I have not seen one instance where people have derogated or passed judgment on Kellen here. They have just stated what the rumors were. Maturity rather than censorship has ruled here. And that says a great deal about the folks here - if we can state rumors like that, and THEN withhold judgement and not condemn him, then to me that says more about the folks here than demanding censorhsip does. Its a much more mature approach.
And I agree with you.
I'm trying to show some consideration for an 18 year old kid who may or may not but probably did make a mistake
Out of curiosity, do you feel sympathy for everyone who is booted out of school, or just the ones that happen to play football?
Didn't say I was sympathetic, just that I didn't feel it was worth talking about under the circumstances. I have no respect for individuals who are accused of what Kellen is in this rumor, there's just little to be gained in this case until we know more.
Here's what we know: Brady Hoke has already passed judgment on him. At this point it really doesn't matter whether we hold our tongue or not. He's not, and never will be, part of this program.
This is true and there is something to that. He'd know the situation better then all of us and nothing he's done so far makes me question his judgment.
I just think that given the allegation and any form of connection between the blog and his family, it's prudent that we not try and go into details when we don't know the facts is all. Too delicate a situation.
I question him giving a scholarship to a 2 star 215lb fullback, but that's another story.
Double post. Please neg.
Because it's the kind of accusation that you can't unhear. It's a sticky one, and not to be thrown around casually.
said he was kicked off the team for assaulting a female. No one has confirmed this yet
I posted a screenshot of the comment the other day but mods deleted it for some reason. Comment was legit though, TG made it on a public page. Look at the "players absent from media guide" thread from the other day for the leftovers from that discussion
It was in a Facebook message thread, and somebody posted a picture of it in the thread the other day about players not being in the media guide. I wouldn't be surprised if the comment has been deleted.
EDIT: Just read the comment above mine ^^^
I wish him well, but I really wanted to see what he could do on Saturday afternoons. He was probably the incoming freshman that I was the most excited for.
this opens up 2 more scholarships immediately?
Just makes it easier to get to the 26 that they desire since technically the Inn is full. Attrition was needed.
I did the math about a month ago and I counted 27 scholarships for 5th year seniors and incoming freshmen. This would make it 29. I also counted about 6 players that I think will definitely get a 5th year, so I'm assuming we are at around 23 scholarships for next year's class now.
His dad must be PISSED.
He seemed more excited about all this than Kellen.
As am I, and I don't have nearly as much at stake. A terrific student, and he credited his Mom for stressing his academics. Not surprising that it's such a shock that he won't be here. Very sad all around.
not to get overly excited about recruiting. Some great high school guys never see a college football field, some of those guys you thought were just "fillers" end up as starters. I hope whatever happened he gets fixed and finds his way somewhere.
Hope he lands on his feet somewhere.
What a shame. I really thought he'd be a good player. Best of luck to him.
This was the kid who was so excited about committing that he started singing The Victors in RR's office, who was fulfilling a long-time dream of his father's. Given that he was supposedly a really good student, it doesn't seem likely that this was academic in nature, so the rumors have continued life.
Being a parent, I know that if a son of mine was booted off the team for the rumored reason, I'd wring his neck.
Some kids just can't handle the freedom of college.
College hadn't started yet. Is it really possible that an academically solid kid who loves Michigan gets to campus in June and by the middle of July blows it?
I don't get it.
This sucks. I was really excited about Jones in Mattison's defense. Jenkins-Stone will have the opportunity to play early after Demens leaves now.
Or Bolden. Ross seems like he would make a terrific WILL.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought they were planning on RJS being MLB and Ross/Ringer/Bolden taking the outsides...
I think you are correct. I think Ross is supposed to play WILL.
is a wlb
If the kid did something offensive -- if -- then at least let his departure stand as an example of what separates Michigan from, oh, let's say OSU and MSU.
Pretty sure the reason MSU had such a bad year last year in basketball was because Izzo booted his troubled kids.
If you are referring to D'Antonio then well played, sir.
Correct you as well, sir. Izzo is fine. But Dantonio is the league's biggest sleazebag (now that Tress is gone).
I hate being this guy, but MSU had a couple of basketball players who were accused of some really awful sexual offenses last year. Obviously, they might have been BS allegations, but as far as I know, there were no punishments from Izzo and the story was kept strangely quiet.
To echo what has already been said, this is disappointing. Hope he is able to bounce back from this.
Also disappointing to hear Pace's UM career is over before it even began. Good luck to him. And even though he is no longer on the team, any word on if he will stick around to earn his degree?
Sad to hear that. Hopefully the rumors aren't true and it's due to another reason, but gotta wish him the best. I guess this opens the door for the '12 LBs to make an immediate impact
What happened with Pace. Article in Detroit News says medical issue. Is he going to be all right? Serious? Anybody know?
Nothing life-threatening but he's had some persistent back problems which apparently are serious enough to be career-ending.
Back problems are terrible at any position in any sport, but a position where you start out bent over and really need your core to be solid makes it that much harder. Even if our coaches engaged in Sabaning of guys (and we hope they don't) there's no way in hell they'd do it to an offensive lineman given the lack of depth there, so this must be a pretty big issue.
"a position where you start out bent over and really need your core to be solid makes it that much harder"
For Kellen Jones. Not for other posters in this blogs cursing other posters. A lot of internet tough guys.
Well damn...I was really hoping this was over blown because you always have two sides to a story and then you have the truth. But I guess he really blew it. Like the posters said above, his dad is probably PISSED. Best of luck to him getting his life together and so sorry it didn't work out.
Sure, we have a lot of LB in the incoming class, but we will need someone to step in ASAP and Kellen looked like one of the most promising options.
Hopefully he can get his college career on track.
I'm not much on rumors; but I do like news, even when it is sad and sobering news.
Please stop recruiting the whole state of Texas...There's always an issue..
Jarrett Irons and Mercury Hayes disagree.
Mallett, Stonum, McGuffie and now Jones.
That has a lot to do with the fact that we haven't had many coaches lately with close Texas ties, so we haven't gotten many players out of there to begin with. Furthermore, I don't consider Mallett or McGuffie's departures to be anything out of the ordinary. If anything, we would have been extremely lucky to have gotten Mallett to stay after we hired a coach who favored a completely different offense.
Greg Mattison has some Texas ties, going back to his days at A&M. We recruited Texas very well in his first stint here and hopefully we will again now.
Now I think you're a fool. Texas and Texas A+M, to name just two schools, have rosters full of players from Texas who aren't a problem and don't have issues.
EDIT: This appears as a reply to Jmblue for some reason. It was actually a reply to Natesezgoblue's second post where he lists Mallett, McGuffie and a couple of others as players he seriously believes we shouldn't have recruited.
so medical hardship means that Pace is done for his career? or just the year?
Someone investigate the entire state of West Virginia for witchcraft. The curse they have on RR recruits has gotten ridiculous.
Thank goodness Denard's smile overcomes all forms of evil.
He seemed like a great recruit, good student, etc. I hope he can get his act together whether he ends up playing football or not.
If the rumors are true, I don't really feel as bad for Kellen as I do for his father. He must be devistated.
I just looked around on the GoogleBinge and found what I did not want to see about Kellen. Anyways, let's hope he gets it together.
As for Pace you can feel nothing but pain for the young man. I want him to stick around and get a great degree.
this is sad...sounds like...based upon what Ive read here that he was a good smart kid and gifted athlete...prob first really bad thing hes ever done and his lifetime dream is shattered..It mustve been Obvious bad for this to have happened this quick given what kind of kid it appears he was...
Thats sad. He was the player I was most excited about in this recruiting class, mainly due to our current LB depth. (I'm also very pumped for hayes and rawls, but our rb sitaution isn't in too bad of shape) He seemed so excited to go to michigan too, which makes it that much harder.
Not really sure why some of you guys feel bad for him. I for one do not. This kid had a full ride to play football at the greatest university of all time. A dream for every one of us, and he threw it all away. Even though Kellen is a good kid who made a terrible mistake, I do not feel sorry for him. He did this, not anyone else. Not saying Im perfect, because Im far from it, but if I was blessed to have been given a scholarship to play football at UM, I would not put myself in a situation where I could lose it. I do wish him the best of luck though. Would have love to see him in a winged helmet.
I agree with you. I only feel bad for his father, who seemed to do all the right things for his kid only to have him throw it away with something stupid, and for the coaching staff, who suffered some serious bad luck. But there is no reason to feel bad for Kellen: he did something bad, and now he'll pay the consequences, and hopefully learn from the experience.
thought he was supposed to be an impact LB this year. WTF?
It sad to see because he would have been a great player for us but on the bright side, it's another spot for getting to 85 with our great recruiting class coming in.
I wish people would stop saying this means we are going to take 28 recruits now.....this is just part of the attrition Brady Hoke knew would happen. In fact maybe he knew about these situations when he said we were taking 26.
I think Kellen would have looked pretty good on the line.
Jones seemed like the perfect Michigan recruit, and at a position of huge need. I wonder what the heck happened. I guess it will come out eventually. I'm hugely bummed. This makes 2012's huge LB haul all the more critical. Also, Desmond Morgan now looks like a lock to play LB vs. switching to FB in light of today's commitment of a FB from Utah.
This is the biggest loss to me from that class. I thought Kellen had great potential to start right away, or at least get good playing time. He seemed like a really football smart player who loved Michigan. Does anyone know why he isn't enrolled anymore? Grades? Injury? Off campus hooliganry?
If the rumors swirling around are true then this is the only way for this to go down for our program and I am glad Hoke has handled it swiftly and without any hesitation. Further, I feel bad for any potential victim(s) of the incident and hope that justice is served.
As a football program, of course, it's very disappointing. Regardless of what the reason is, I feel very sorry for his parents who have by all accounts tried very hard.
Exactly, Hoke made the right choice even though this kid could have helped out immediately, showing integrity that other coaches seem to be lacking these days (Tressel, Dantonio, Kelly to name a few).
I'm not picking on you; I'm trying to expose the foibles of progressive rumor-thinking.
As far as I am aware, we don't know if Jones was "disciplined" at all. He might have withdrawn from school. He may be getting ready to defend himself in legal proceedings. We don't know much of anything about any legal proceedings. If there are any legal proceedings. Maybe Kellen is too upset about the situation, whatever it is, to focus on moving from Texas to Michigan, start school and start a collegiate football career.
I don't know. I really do not know anything.
But in the course of giving Hoke cedit for being some sort of stern disciplinarian ("integrity"), we are effectively convicting Kellen Jones of being in need of that level discipline. And that is an outrageous presumption at this point. At least from our perspective, it is.
Every third or fourth post in this thead should be a reminder to people to not guess and make presumptions about rumors and especially not rumors concerning serious legal proceedings, of which there are none formalized at this time.
