IS IT ALRIGHT TO STAND AT GAME?

Submitted by newfoundhbomb on

Hey i'm going to a game this year for the first time and i was wondering if most people stand during the game?  they usually show people standing on tv.  I want to be respectful to other fans but at the same time watch and enjoy the game myself.

This is one of those timeless questions. I don't think there is an easy answer. Sometimes when you stand the people behind you, obviously not students or rabid fans and often elderly, will shout for you to sit. I suppose they paid for their tickets and have a right to sit and still see what's going on.

However! When things heat up you have to stand. I always tried to strike a sort of balance and sort of go with what's happening around me. It usually works out.

Dude, lay off the Red Wings stuff. He's obviously trying to be a good poster now. There is no point in negging him and hassling him every time he posts. I have no problem negging him if he goes off on another tirade, but seriously give it a rest for now.

I can't speak for Tubes or anyone else, but I only neg really dumb and pointless posts. You know, something like "I like standing better when it comes to football anyways. It makes it more exciting."

Plus, my hangover would appreciate not being antagonized right now.

Short answer: Yes

EDIT: Whoops.  Apparently I was too out of it to even read the question correctly.  That was not my final answer.  Maybe I am still drunk.

Just wait until the game. Either you're entire section will be standing or it will all be sitting. It's not hard to figure out.

Stand up if you feel like it and especially if you are standing to yell and cheer.  If people around you don't like it they should have stayed home and watched the game on their couch in front of the TV.  All these other loud stadiums in the country have their fans standing from kickoff until the final whistle.  You have every right to be a fan and get into the game.

If you are the only person that is standing in your section or within, say, 40 feet radius around you, you are being a dickweed and should sit down to people that paid just as much money and have just ask many rights as you can see the game. Conversely, if the only person sitting within 40 feet of you is directly behind you and is yelling at you to sit, they are being a dickweed. It's really not that hard.

If enough people are standing, you get to stand. If enough people are sitting, you should sit.

Do what everyone else is doing because that's the right thing to do?

I can think of a few fascist regimes that loved that kind of thinking.

If there's a standing section... don't you think someone had to be the first one to stand up at some point? It wasn't printed on the ticket.

I am not a lemming

I am a rabid, football-deprived, U-Conn loathing, broken-hearted, maize-and-blue-bleeding WOLVERINE FAN and I am finally at the game and I've been waiting too freaking long and I've chewed off my fingernails and sacrificed many small animals and BLUE is about to take the field and gnaw the limbs off the Huskies and I am supposed to SIT DOWN? NOW?

I will stand, thank you.

To expand upon your opinion above, it also depends on what is happening in the game.  If Denard gets the edge on a zone read and is about to juke a safety out of his pants and then take one to the house then you have the right to stand no matter who is sitting around you.

If we have an important 3rd down play on defense in the 4th quarter I fully expect everyone to stand.

I think the key is to be as diplomatic as possible.  Pretend you are Dave Brandon.  A blue hair 8 rows back yells for you to sit down simply say,

" Hi BLUE HAIR,

I have received your request for me to SIT DOWN and I am taking your request into full consideration.  Although your request for me to SIT DOWN is very important I must also take into consideration the need for the MICHIGAN FOOTBALL TEAM to hear me scream and yell in their full support.  I thank you for your request, BLUE, and will have a response for you very shortly.

Go Blue!

Or just sit down when they tell you to and then stand back up when you want to.  When in doubt sneak in a water bottle and throw it at them.

Please note, I am firmly in the "stand as much as possible" camp. Seriously. I agree with you. But I have to point out the flaw in logic. The difference between your right to stand and their right to sit is that their right to sit doesn't interfere with your right to have a view/sightline of the game, whereas your right to stand is interfering with their right to have a sightline to the game. Note that I am using the term "right" loosely here, but whatever, I think you get my point: their exercise of theirs doesn't interfere with yours, but it isn't the same vice-versa. Although I still try to stand as much as humanly possible, and will ignore some "down in fronts" myself.

Your right to stand up at a game should never get in the way of your duty to be considerate to those around you.

If you're the only person standing in your immediate vicinity, you're doing it wrong.

I always offer to switch seats with the person. Some are truly too old to stand. I think that is the polite way to handle it. If they don't want to switch me seats to hell with em.

I bought a conference final ticket for the Leafs a few years back literally on the glass at the blueline. I was working as a summer student at the time and couldn't really afford the $450 price, was gonna scalp and watch it at a bar. Needless to say the people down there were old corporate types who would never stand, told me to sit down, I politely declined....damned if I would spend that kinda money and not enjoy myself.

Moral of the story-dont spend $450 on a ticket if your not sure you can sell it.

Alternative moral-stand and enjoy yourself, hopefully the people behind will take your cue.

So here is my counter argument to the sitting crew. ( who did pay for seats) screw you I paid as well and if I want to stand and support my school I will. If you can't stand for 2 minutes during a play well why are you at a football game? You can sit between plays or for halftime. I'm not a jerk but I don't tell people who are sitting to stand so why do they have the right to tell me to sit?

Just to add because I know someone is going to get upset with the screw you part. What I mean is if my section is standing and sitting back and forth between plays I go with the flow. If my section is standing I stand the whole time, if there are a bunch or 80 year old's around my mother and father raised me well enough to sit down if someone can't see...

But if someone is out of the way rude about it , well buddy I'm standing because if you want to be a jerk and call me out well.... Also why does anyone what to sit? You can't even sit in the stadium maybe some people like sitting on other people??

Stand. When I'm watching the game at the house I stand for the whole game. About 5' from a 54" tv. My wife used to make fun of me but she's starting to stand more and more. Lead by example. Stand for the team, show your support.

I stand at home so I can get good distance on the remote when last second field goals are blocked.

I go with the flow at the stadium.  Spent 4 years in the student section and can't even verify that there are actually bleachers in that section.  Have sat all over the stadium since and I tend to go with the flow.  In a blue hair section i've never been told to sit down, they generally stand on an important 3rd down or as a big play is developing, but they definitely are not standing during TV timeouts.

The TEAM I'm sure prefers the fans to be loud and standing and cheering for them.  The TEAM is really what it's all about isn't it?  Everyone who goes into the Big House on Saturday is going to watch THE TEAM.  Penn State, Virginia Tech, Florida, LSU... all the best and loudest stadiums in the country have fans standing the majority of the time.  If we had less "Down in front" people then we'd be have a much better atmosphere at the games.  We have the largest stadium in the country, yet it's never included in the toughest places to play.  That to me is a problem.  We need more enthusiasm and if you need to stand to cheer and be enthusiastic then by all means you should do it!

Sometimes people around you might want to stand and cheer but they don't want to be the first people to do it.  Lead the crowd and maybe more people will be willing to stand and cheer and make the Big House a more intimidating place to play.

My seats are in a section (1) where there are some older alums - like 70's and older.  For the most part, other than the obligatory times you stand, most people are up and down all game. Some of the older folks are simply not able to stand for three hours.

Things work out fine for the most part.
