Iowa rushing the field. Really?

Submitted by notetoself on

did anyone else leave their tv on long enough to observe this? beating an unranked team at home while ranked #12 is grounds for rushing the field? really? come on, iowa student section. show some restraint.

I love some good hyperbole, so can we call this the "Worst. Field Rush. Ever."?

(Actually, the worst is probably Kentucky, who rushed the field after their team LOST to LSU on a last second miracle play. But at least they had a good excuse - the student section was on the other side of the field and they didn't see the play.)

1) There was a thread about this already
2) In that thread, someone familiar with Iowa points out they do this every game so students can celebrate with the players. There was nothing special about this.

1) whoops. it's 10 pages back already. i guess there's been a lot to talk about in the last 36 hours...
2) hmm. kind of a cool event to celebrate with the team, but as you said, if there's "nothing special about this", then how are you supposed to celebrate a really big win? i'll just say i'm glad we're not rushing the field after beating indiana...

1) Understand, I was just letting you know where I got the information from.

2) It's like when the team comes over to sing the Victors. Also cool.

I'm sure if they beat someone big, it'd be a bit more intense down there, rather than the slow crawl that it was for our game. Maybe some rigorous corn planting on the 50 or something to that effect.

2) that is honestly one of the best things that RR has brought to Michigan. honestly.

sure. i just feel like rushing the field should be reserved for "holy crap! i can't believe that just happened!" moments. you know, instead of every win. it's like the red sox popping the bubbly for clinching the wild-card with 5 straight losses.

While we only have a couple 'real rivalries' (OSU, MSU, maybe ND), everyone considers Michigan as their top opponent before the season starts. Why? Because we have traditionally been the best for a very, very long time and everyone wants to beat the best.

Beating 'this' Michigan team (or last years) isn't quite the same, but let them eat their cake. They may only get 2 or 3 wins against us in their lifetime.

You do know what the all-time record against Iowa is right?

40-11-4 with the first game being played in 1900!

Hmm so 11 wins over 109 years. Average life expectancy is somewhere in the 70s or something? So ya I guess they will maybe get to see it 7 or 8 times in their lives on average. Take away the one they don't remember as a baby and you're not far off from 2-3.

...in two meaningful ways. First, every recruit should see that teams are ALWAYS gunning for the University of Michigan, regardless of records and rankings. Show them that we are everyone's rivals and programs prove they are inferior by going nuts when they pull out a win against the best because they know it will not happen again for a long time. Iowa, ranked 12th in the land, won by 2 on their home field and was handed five turnovers. Then, they storm the field and celebrated like it was the biggest win in school history. Maybe it was? Hmmm....

Second, the replay of this should be cycled over and over again in the Wolverine clubhouse during the week leading up to next season's homecoming game at The Big House, giving our men a little extra motivation to score as many points as possible and ensuring a ridiculous scene like this never happens again on their watch. October 16th, 2010. Circle it.

In college I bought a Ralph Lauren suit at Goodwill for $10. It wasn't the most attractive suit, and it was Goodwill, but damnit it was a Ralph Lauren. We're still Michigan.

Are we seriously reacting this way? I would expect Iowa to rush the field. The last thing I would be thinking, as a Michigan fan, is "why are they rushing the field after they beat us?"

Call me crazy, but are we not the most arrogant fan base in the nation? And for good reason? Arrogant fan bases don't think these things. So Iowa was favored. I still expected to win this game; our boys outplayed Iowa for the entire game. What I took from this game was "wow, we were minus 4 in turnovers and only lost the game by two. We were a clearly superior football team today with the exception of beating ourselves." Iowa stormed the field because they beat Michigan. Michigan is Michigan. We, as Michigan fans should all realize this. Any Michigan "fan" who feels that Iowa fans overreacted when they stormed the field clearly have an inferiority complex. Sorry, but there is no place for that at Michigan. Every time we lose, I would expect the opposing fans to rush the field. It always is and always be a huge accomplishment to beat the Michigan wolverines!

EDIT: I, arrogant Michigan fan, would be insulted had they not rushed the field

I think 12 hours of tailgating and the amount of lubrication that would go along with that leading up to kickoff may have played a role in the fans urge to rush the field.
