Iowa QB Jake Rudock graduate transferring to Michigan?
There are rumors flying all over twitter about it this morning and a couple trusted posters on scout have said that they heard from solid sources that he informed Iowa that he will be coming here for his RS senior season. This would obviously be a major shake-up to the most important position on our depth chart.
February 24th, 2015 at 10:41 AM ^
If true I think he would end up starting. Not sure why guys transfer if there is a good shot they would not play at all. I think the O'Korn situation is different because he is not a senior.
February 24th, 2015 at 10:54 AM ^
Not sure if you're saying this, but whether he decides to transfer because he thinks he has a good shot to play has nothing to do with his actual place in JH's meritocracy.
One would think his experience would be a positive for sure, but there's nothing I see that makes me think the competition is anything but wide open.

unless GERG Davis just actually crushed his soul and ability, he has displayed shaky accuracy and an inability to throw downfield. Not saying we have first rounders on the depth chart, but I *hope* we have better ability in the bench.
February 24th, 2015 at 2:45 PM ^
Don't blame Davis. He came to Iowa expecting to run uptempo and throw the ball much more. He came expecting to develop a QB and give him the car keys. There has been a soul crushing and its the head coach's fault.
February 24th, 2015 at 1:48 PM ^
he not happy at Iowa and he wants to get better. If his goal is to get to the NFL, a season working with Harbaugh and company improves his chances. If he was just interested in starting, he'd go elsewhere. Obviously the coaches can't promise him more than an open competition. If he thinks he can play in the NFL, then he should expect to win the job here.

Are graduate transfers unrestricted. In other words, can Iowa say "no"?
February 24th, 2015 at 10:46 AM ^
It's an NCAA rule that allows the grad transfer immediate eligibility at a school that offers a graduate student a degree in something not offered at his current school (Iowa).
February 24th, 2015 at 10:55 AM ^
Bellomy posted the signed transfer papers he got, which gave him permission to speak to other teams. It specifically said that he could not speak to teams that are on Michigan's schedule next year. Maybe it's different if you've already graduated, not doing your last semester? I don't know what Rudock's situation is.
February 24th, 2015 at 11:00 AM ^
Bellomy was not a UM graduate. You are correct Bellomy had to follow UM's guidelines with UM's permission to transfer. The Grad student (Rudock in this case) is a different set of circumstances.
February 24th, 2015 at 1:51 PM ^
Otherwise he'd have to sit out a year, and since he was at UM for four, that would exhaust his eligibility.
This article refers to him as a grad transfer:

isn't Hayes a graduate and I believe his letter is the same. Plus a few years ago Saint Joes in Philly blocked a grad transfer
February 24th, 2015 at 4:52 PM ^
Bellomy most definitely graduated from UM.
February 24th, 2015 at 11:03 AM ^
Once a student graduates, they are allowed to walk away from their school, no questions asked and no paperwork required. If they have 1 year of eligibility left, and if they are accepted to a graduate program that their previous school does not offer, they may use that year of eligibility at their graduate school.
February 24th, 2015 at 1:52 PM ^
with two years of eligibility remaining. Danny O'Brien was the first I noticed, but more players are putting themselves in position to graduate early.
February 24th, 2015 at 8:47 PM ^
I think this is wrong, and the Iowa needs to consent.
February 24th, 2015 at 2:32 PM ^
We don't play Iowa next yr so that's a non issue.

Why would they? We don't play them.
February 24th, 2015 at 10:56 AM ^
BTCG is always a possibility, but no reason for IA to say no unless they're just being pricks.
February 24th, 2015 at 12:26 PM ^
several years back, and he played against us. I want to say his name is Brian Wright or something?
February 24th, 2015 at 12:28 PM ^
What do you mean by "We don't play them"? We've had transfers before. I remember Grant Mason becoming a starting CB here after transferring from Stanford.
February 24th, 2015 at 1:54 PM ^
Pretty sure that's what he meant. It's moot though, since Iowa has no say in where he goes.
February 24th, 2015 at 2:42 PM ^
Oh, duh. That makes sense.
February 24th, 2015 at 10:43 AM ^
I don't know about you but I think having a QB who can throw pinpoint accurate 5 yard curls on 3rd and 8 is really what Michigan needs to get to that next level.
February 24th, 2015 at 10:48 AM ^
"Pinpoint" might be a bit of a stretch, but yeah, when you can lock up a guy who will give you more opportunities to get your punter work, you gotta pull that trigger.

Misc stats from the Iowa website:
- Ranked second in the Big Ten in completion percentage (61.7%), fourth in pass efficiency (133.5) and sixth in passing yards per game (203) and total offense (217.7)
- had fewest interceptions (five) among Big Ten quarterbacks with 250 or more attempts
- ranks eighth in career passing touchdowns (34), passing yards (4,819 yards) and total offense (5,213)
- one of three FBS players since 2008 to pass and rush for four-plus touchdowns in their first four career games (Robert Griffin III, 2008; Johnny Manziel, 2012; Jake Rudock, 2013)
- ranked fifth in the Big Ten in total offense (208.7) and sixth in passing yards per game (190.1) in 2013

I threw up the stats from Rudock/Gardner last year on this site a week or so ago. The TD to Int ratio was obvious of course, but the difference in yards per game and efficiency were also significant. All in favor of Rudock.
February 24th, 2015 at 11:08 AM ^
To be fair about 100 QBs in the country would have compared favorably to Devin's stats of 2014. They were awful. 2013 Devin was another situation.
It we want an easy comparison, Rudock is a less mobile version of Gary Nova without (IMO) as much oomph on the ball but far less turnover prone.

DG never developed and spent most of his time running for his life.

What happened to "If you're for us... Be FOR us!" What happened to HARBAUGH!!??
Honeymoon ended already before the 1st Spring practice?
If this Iowa QB is accepted in a transfer here I'm guessing it's because HARBAUGH thinks we need him? You geniuses (and I'm always in your corner Bronx) can mock his Iowa accomplishments all you like...I'm still all in on HARBAUGH!
On the other hand, if Rudock doesn't end up coming here, then you were all right about him, of course....

5 yard curls? What are we, the new New York Jets?
February 24th, 2015 at 11:13 AM ^
Don't poo poo the 5 yard curls. We couldn't run for positive yards not too long ago
February 24th, 2015 at 11:28 AM ^
heh, I was thinking the same thing. Positive yards!
February 24th, 2015 at 12:51 PM ^
A 5 yard curl would have been awesome last year.
February 24th, 2015 at 10:42 AM ^
play Iowa for another decade. Thanks Jim.
February 24th, 2015 at 10:43 AM ^
Twitter seems to be going in both directions, though it seems like there is more pessimism than optimism on the possibility. Nothing solid either way.
February 24th, 2015 at 10:47 AM ^
The thing with the twitter chatter is that they're referencing a Steve Deace Iowa interview for a lot of it, but this morning he came on Michigan's scout page and said he heard that it's happening. Obviously nothing's 100% yet but it seems like there's a good chance this might actually go through.
February 24th, 2015 at 10:49 AM ^
Who is Steve Deace? Why does he have credibility?
Serious question. Not trying to troll.
February 24th, 2015 at 10:53 AM ^
He's got a conservative radio show in Iowa and is a Michigan fan but apparently talks Iowa sports a lot too. He's not usually an insider but has been posting on the scout board for a very long time. This morning he said "On Jake Rudock to Michigan... I'm being informed from a solid source the family has told people on the Iowa side of things that he's transferring to Michigan."
So take that FWIW, but it's definitely quite the interesting new development.
February 24th, 2015 at 3:42 PM ^
FWIW, Sam has not weighed in on Deace's comments. EDIT: Now he has and says this is a possibility, but wait and see...in his opinion only.
February 24th, 2015 at 11:06 AM ^
He's the author of insightful hitpieces such as this one in today's Washington Times about why President Obama isn't really a christian.
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/feb/23/steve-deace-jesus-says-…
In other words, the guy is off his rocker.
February 24th, 2015 at 11:17 AM ^
Just because he's verifiably nuts with the church and state stuff doesn't mean that he doesn't have a good source on whether or not Jake Rudock is transferring to Michigan. He does some sports talk too, after all, and I think it's safe to assume that he looked to someone other than jesus for the info from his post this morning.
February 24th, 2015 at 11:28 AM ^
Why bring politics in it?
February 24th, 2015 at 11:52 AM ^
That guy has no contact with reality. Anything he says should be questioned.
February 24th, 2015 at 12:07 PM ^
Yes! Thank you!
February 24th, 2015 at 12:10 PM ^
He's not expressing a political view. He's making a verifiably false (and offensive) statement. There's political views, and then there's crazy. This man is crazy and his article is evidence of that. His article is no more of a political statement than Mel Gibson saying Jews start all wars (also verifiably false and offensive). Neither statement deserves to be respected as a legitimate political opinion. Both are equally deserving of contempt.
February 24th, 2015 at 12:16 PM ^
I don't see what his political opinions have to do with whether or not he would have inside sources regarding Ruddock. He may be a nutcase but can still know people who are connected to Iowa's program.
February 24th, 2015 at 1:10 PM ^
He very well have have legitimate sources, but him being a known nutcase certainly affects his credibility.
February 24th, 2015 at 12:18 PM ^
What does this have to do with him knowing something about a sports story in iowa?
February 24th, 2015 at 12:21 PM ^
Following this reasoning, should we ignore everything you say, given that you recently made an extremely callous and insensitive post about the alleged victim in the Jameis Winston case?
February 24th, 2015 at 1:13 PM ^
Negative, because unlike what Deace posted, what I posted isn't verifiably false. It's an opinion based on the available evidence.
