Intro Presser Message/Themes??

Submitted by ghostofhoke on

When Hoke was introduced we were fed some of the better "Michiganspeak" we'd heard in a very long time. He quickly rallied all those desperate to see the return to doing things the Michigan Way. One of the overarching themes in his message was that it wasn't about him, it was about "The Team"--as though the words were coming straight from the mouth of Bo himself.

I think tomorrow we are going to hear some stuff from JH that will make Hoke's promises of team toughness look like he was talking about a Brownie Troop. That being said, this is one of the biggest coaching hires of all time let alone at Michigan. We have officially gone "all-in" for football and we have the highest paid, highest profile coach in the game. We have a prodigal son, in every sense of the term, coming home to be King.

So I ask: How is JH going to be able to convince us that it's not all about him?

Do you think that will even be a theme?

What do you think the theme will be?

What messages do you think we'll hear tomorrow about what's to come for Michigan Football?

Does winning National Championships now become a goal or do we stay focused on BIG Championships?

This is going to be Harbawesome.

I don't think that focusing on B1G championships and national championships must be mutually exclusive.  Focus on winning the Big Ten and the playoff berth will take care of itself, it's essentially a matter of cart-before-horse for me personally.

Anyways, I think the mere action of coming back to Michigan despite being such a hot commodity in the NFL does all the speaking we really need.  He cares about Michigan, a lot.  He's going to get us humming along so that, in (hopefully) 7 years he can either continue or pass the keys to a groomed successor.

I do agree with you. I was with a Bama fan friend yesterday who was more than excited to hear about the hire because of their never ending hatred of Meyer. We were talking about the playoff games and when you think about the coaching matchup between Saban and Meyer both with a month to prepare it's gotta get you excited about football. Now think about the liklihood that we'll be in that conversation in the next few years and we'll likely have them outgunned in the coaching aspect--that's an awesome fucking feeling.

I think Harbaugh will say that it is time to start winning right now.  He will say that there is enough talent here to compete for the Big Ten Championship right now.  He will probably mention the playoff as a goal in year two or year three.  He may mention that he has a little "surprise" for the schools in East Lansing and Columbus.  He might even mention exactly how many days it is to the Ohio State Game.

Most of all, though, he won't preface every sentence with "Uh, well" and we won't have to call Ohio State "Ohio" anymore.

personally, i hope he doesnt breakout all the Bo talk (EDIT: i expect him to mention Bo, but I just hope the whole press conference isnt about jim being sentimental. I hope he has some original thoughts...which im sure he will) and i pray to God he doesnt say anything about whether or not this is an elite job. i just know someone will ask that question again. haha

i hope he makes it low-key as possible in front of the media for the intro and then they have fun with it at the hoops game.

I think he's going to make it known that this was huge for his family, and it was bigger than just a coaching job for him. From his old man, to his immediate family, to Bo's family, and the entire Michigan family -- he's got a chance to really do something special, while walking in the footsteps of his heroes.

He can't say anything wrong tomorrow... well today.  Whatever rhe says we are going to be drooling over oursleves celebrating and over analyzing.  I mean the coach always wins the first press conference.   And with him and his deterrmination and steely eyed gazes he will be offering red meat no matter what he says to the masses.

After 7 years of words all I really care about are actions at this point.  He is an action person.  I will watch and enjoy but what happens in September is what matters.  He is in a can't lose situation in the next 24 hrs.

The message is the message - we have to go and start looking like Michigan on the field instead of fucking Purdue.

I'm in the minority but I'd prefer to return to an era where Michigan football speaks softly and carries a big stick.  The only messages I wish to be heard are those in the exasperated faces of the Dantionios and Meyers after we lay waste to them.  No words need be spoken if we do the job on the field.

A wry Harbaugh smirk?

Acceptable.

I'm with you, but I think Jimmy is more of a loud spoken type who also happens to carry a big stick, and while I prefer letting the winning do the talking, after suffering through Dantonio's infant mentality I won't mind that much if we rub it in his face a little bit.

or maybe ... come coach for me.

Everyone else is already on board.  In fact everyone else is so desperate for success that they will not hear anything but brilliance in whatever he says.   There is no critical take on this until the fall.

RR is seen as having booted his first press conference when he was announced. The narrative that followed was that he wasn't a "Michigan Man(tm)," and he didn't know The Traditions, and it colored everything that followed.

Holk was seen as having knocked it out of the park, and people gave him the benefit of the doubt until the on-field mediocrity began.

In both cases, this site and many in the media have spilled a lot of ink and time talking about first press conferences. The announcement of a new coach has taken on an aura of having deep significance. I think these things can make things more difficult if they are handled poorly, but they don't make a damn bit of difference if the team doesn't win. If RR had won10 games a year, we'd all claim him as ours and would have forgotten his first conference.

I'd like to have a nice, boring, mundane press conference so that we can move on from making it so important or seeing it as coloring his tenure here. Given JH's history, I imagine we'll have plenty of colorful press conferences in the future, and plenty to talk about. This particular announcement doesn't need to be a be-all and end-all, and I think we may all be a bit better off with a little less Michigan Red Meat and a bit more humble pie until we actually beat somebody relevant.
