An Interview with Devin Funchess
Andrew interviewed incoming freshman tight end Devin Funchess, who is currently about 223 lbs. and growing. He expects to see the field in the fall, and based on what we've seen from the other tight ends on the roster, I'm starting to expect it, too.
and his yac is very impressive.

he seems to do a nice job of catching the ball & then quickly turning his head to look downfield & avoid taking the big hits.
Its hard to tell on film how fast he is.
Ace says 4.6 to 4.7 range which he gave TWO fakes outta FIVE
Funchess looks like the real deal. Once he gets the bulk he needs, he'll be a real weapon. For as bad as our TE group is now, it should be a strength in 2013.

What do you think his ideal playing weight should be? He probably wont play much with his hand down, so Im assuming 230-240 would be adequate. If he puts too much weight on, that could hinder some of his speed which wont be good.

If you read the link in the OP, he says the coaches see him playing at 240-245 down the road.
Yeah, but does anyone actually click those links? I keed, I keed.
I agree with you, I don't know if you ever want your TE to be under 240, at least not by much. He'll still play before he gets that big, but I'd want my TE to be 240+, even if he's really athletic. Koger was really athletic, and he was like 255.
The point of a TE is that you have a guy who can be a blocker and a receiver. If you have a TE who can't do one of those things, it takes away a lot of the value of the position.

I know its a highlight tape, but damn that kid can catch anything. He made some great catches in traffic. Very soft hands. I also like his demeanor and the way he acts after the play. Celebrate a little with his teammates, but act like you've been there before.

For the first minute of that video it seemed like the QB was trying like hell to overthrow him and couldn't

He may play more of a WR role this fall.

I hope when he says it's "weird" that people come up to him now because they recognize him, he means interesting weird and not creepy weird.
When do the freshmen non-EEs usually show up on campus and when can they start meeting/working with the coaches? (I assume it's S&C coach only until fall practice?)

Typically it's early or mid-June.
Mario Ojemudia will be there end of April. Other guys leave end of June.

I honestly think Devin will play a big roll in catching the ball by the MSU game. He will probably see some limited time in a a couple games leading up to the state game then hopefully have a decent understanding of the offense by october. I have really high expectations for this kid I hope he really gets to show his skils this season, because we could definitely use some more good hands out there. Glad to see he has his weight up too, I remember he said he wanted to be around 222lb by the time fall camp started so it seems he has been working hard he will most likey be playing at 230lb this year which should allow him to split out quite a bit.
Yeah, I think if they're going to use him a lot in the Big Ten season, they need to get him acclimated to college game speed early in the year. Maybe not Alabama, but against Air Force and UMass and so on.
I've said for quite some time he'll play a lot this year. Many people refused to believe it because of his size.
Guys just bouncing off this big fellow!
