Interesting: UM 11th most picked team to win tourney on ESPN

Submitted by Cali's Goin' Blue on

I was just looking at teams picked to win by round at ESPN and fans have picked UM to win the championship 1.1% of the time, which is 11th highest. It seems that college bball observers have been paying attention to the recent success by the team. Or it just means that UM has a lot of homer fans.

This is almost always an invalid argument (e.g. when opposing fans say Vegas is giving Michigan more points than we should have because we have a large fanbase), but in this case, lotta Michigan fans out there.

I'm sure its driven by peoples general belief that a hot team in a major conference tournament is a great bet to go deep, but I think I read that that's not actually true and UConn was the huge exception and not the rule

Well if you consider their fresh legs, the team is due to start shooting the ball lights out and that they've played in Indy how many times so it's kind of an advantage, things are looking good. I'd say if they handle Louisville convincingly, the sky is limit baby. Playing four games in four days and beating those tough teams was a damn tough task. They can blow out some of the best teams. Bring the swag!!

Interesting that M is only 22nd in picks to pass round one, but 7th to win it all. The percentage and rank steadily increase round to round.

Not terribly so. Combine that a 7 vs. 10 is close to a coin flip in many cases and a tantilizing mini upset to folks, with the fact there are many people who flat out don't like U of M and want to see them lose early, and you have a lot of brackets with then out soon. Then look at the many U of M homers and people who simply like our current story/streak. In the end, you have a lot of people on complete opposite extreme ends of where they would like to see U of M end up in this tourney.

I'll admit it.  I also want to win money with Michigan wins the tourney!  So why not pick them?

Besides, if they keep playing like the did in the BTT, they really can beat anyone...

I don't think this is surprising. There are ten teams picked more often than us, and when you get that low, you aren't looking at stats or at seedings: You are taking a stab at an out-of-the-box winner.

And when you look for those, you look for hot teams and/or certain team characteristics (Hot PG!) that tend to produce tournament success. So, between homer Michigan fans and people who see Walton lighting things up and the "story" that would be fun to follow, people take a shot at Michigan.

At least, some of them do, after 10 other teams.
