It also makes them 4-0 in the last four. Arbitrary time period is arbitrary.
October 16th, 2011 at 10:55 AM ^
But we are still Michigan. That is never arbitrary.
October 16th, 2011 at 11:27 AM ^
I can't wait for next year...We are going to take it out on them like no other...
October 16th, 2011 at 11:45 AM ^
we sound like Cub fans. Always waiting for next year.
October 16th, 2011 at 1:03 PM ^
... But it's kind of true.
I mean, before the season started, this was an auto-loss in my book... the fact that we showed enough promise to compete means that there was a small victory there. There is that whole nagging "No UM coach has beaten MSU their first try since 1948" meme that will continue, but Hoke will right the ship, there's no reason (yet) to think he won't.
Still, sucks losing. It really sucks.
October 16th, 2011 at 10:15 AM ^
I'm just happy we swept 'em in basketball. No more "____ days since Michigan beat MSU, hehehehehehe" Even though you play about 3 games every 365 days.
October 16th, 2011 at 10:16 AM ^
The thing now is managing the ribbing from their fans for another year. Otherwise, the hard part is how it effects the division race. We'll need some help.
Watching the way we've improved this year in all phases and how we had a real chance to make it interesting against a quality team yesterday, has taken away concern about the rivalry turning against Michigan (to where we go 12-30 against them). The recruiting concern ended about April.
The whole thing gives the MSM angles to draw Michigan fans into more page views and call-ins to radio programs. It all starts with the hilarious picture they paint of some sort of long-term mediocrity. If you fall for that, seek therapy.
October 16th, 2011 at 10:28 AM ^
I'm glad i don't live in Michigan anymore so i don't have to deal with their fan base. I feel for those of you that do.
October 16th, 2011 at 2:10 PM ^
Telling them to live it up now. They know Cousins isn't coming back. That is why this year was so important to them. They know recruiting has already swung back in favor of the good guys. The shift back to us having a more competitive team has begun.
October 16th, 2011 at 10:18 AM ^
prove you are superior is weak. Face the facts, they are better than we are right now. They were the better team on the field yesterday and have been the last four years. We have some ctaching up to do. That's another reason why the little brother is so stupid at this point. We are pointing at history and they are pointing at today. In the grand scheme of things, all anyone else sees is right now and right now MSU is better.
October 16th, 2011 at 11:15 AM ^
Taking slices of time or stats to prove you are superior is weak.
followed by:
they've been better for the last four years
How is that not an arbitrary slice of time? Followed by:
We are pointing at history and they are pointing at today.
Apparently "today" stretches back 4 years and "history" is prior to that?
October 16th, 2011 at 11:21 AM ^
"Apparently "today" stretches back 4 years and "history" is prior to that?"
"Time isn't holding us, time isn't after us, same as it ever was..."

Tremendous response
October 16th, 2011 at 12:55 PM ^
Like Spartan fans, goldfish have short memories.
Yesterday is history. Whenever people accuse us of "living in the past" ... Well, uhhhhhhh, all we have are stats (=the past) or projections (=not the past). There is no gray area. Reveling over the game yesterday is "living in the past." The difference is some have better memories than others.

we got the bowl monkey off our back last season...
October 16th, 2011 at 10:24 AM ^
Let's just scrap the I-formation for the rest of the season.
October 16th, 2011 at 10:24 AM ^
Let it go. Trying to talk trash when you've lost four straight is pretty lame.
October 16th, 2011 at 10:25 AM ^
UM won something like 8 of 9 before this run (and that one win was clockgate). That was unsustainable, just like losing 4 straight doesn't prove anything about the long-term abilities of both squads. In fact, I like that MSU has finally made this a rivalry - it was getting pretty sad there during the 90s and early 00s. Right now, UM still has a chance at 9-10 wins with some breaks, and that would be huge. MSU now has to play Wiscy and Nebraska, and after this week's over-preparation should be ripe for a butt-whipping at any angry Badger team (the only regular season loss they had last year). So yeah, this loss stings, but the season is far from over. And next year should be interesting with a home game and a senior Denard at the helm.

In fact, I like that MSU has finally made this a rivalry - it was getting pretty sad there during the 90s and early 00s.I don't believe you for a minute. The last thing we need is a bunch of 50-50 rivalry games. That's not conducive to being a national power. With Nebraska, OSU and ND on our schedule every year, I'm all for Sparty being crappy. (Besides, it wasn't nearly as lopsided then as you make it out to be. From 1990-2001, our advantage was just 7-5. Then we won six straight, but two were in OT and another required us to come back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter.)
October 16th, 2011 at 10:28 AM ^
it's now been roughly 1460 days. I'd rather lose in basketball than in football to them.
October 16th, 2011 at 10:45 AM ^
Lose in nothing to them.

Truth
October 16th, 2011 at 10:32 AM ^
I still am not concerned about this whole "They beat us the past four years!!!" hysteria. The last three years, we've been atrocious (at least according to our standards), and to think we could change all that in one year is not realistic. They seem to get a lot more satisfaction out of these wins than I get disappointment.
I think they have a good team, skill-wise, and a coach who can coach D so it makes sense that they won.
I think we have some issues that still need to be figured out, so it makes sense that we lost.
But this whole "owning" thing is silly. There's so much more to our rivalry than football. It may be played out on the football field and basketball court, but we all know it's about people's perceptions of the two schools, money the schools get, top ten lists (I've never seen MSU on one of those, have you?).
They beat us in football this year. Enjoy the win.
October 16th, 2011 at 10:39 AM ^
Stop it. No one cares if Michigan gets more in donations.
October 16th, 2011 at 11:04 AM ^
You're right. I'm merely stoking the fire with that one.
October 16th, 2011 at 2:14 PM ^
if you were a current 4th year senior on this team, you would know that this one hurts badly.
October 16th, 2011 at 10:54 AM ^
Just 18 more in a row and they catch us...
October 16th, 2011 at 12:17 PM ^
For some reason, my dad is a huge Browns fan. There were some streaks in that rivalry in the past (Browns owned up to the 70s, Steeler dominated in the 70s, Browns again in the 80s (albeit a little more even)) So, when the Steelers won a few in a row starting in the mid-90s, I can remember him saying, the Steelers could win 16,15, 14, 13 .... in a row and it the all time series would still only be tied. Since '94 it is 26-4 Steelers and the Steelers now have the overall series lead. Obviously, there are some difference in that they play at least 2x year (maybe even 3x if they meet in the playoffs), and I certainly don't expect MSU to approximate the Steelers success or M to flail around like the Browns, but, all time series leads of these magnitudes can be lost.
Cool story, huh?

It's unlikely that Michigan or msu will be moved and become the Baltimore Ravens.
October 16th, 2011 at 12:53 PM ^
Maybe it was too far into the post for your attention span, but that is the type of thing I meant when I said, "Obviously there are some differences." Sure, there were extenuating circumstances, but there could also be extenuating circumstances in the M-MSU rivalry as well. My general point is -- past performance is not an indication of future results.
October 16th, 2011 at 3:01 PM ^
I'll try to read your mind better when you draw irrelevant comparisons between a wounded-duck NFL team and Michigan.
October 16th, 2011 at 4:25 PM ^
Doesn't take mind reading, only takes someone with enough brains to figure out that "obviously means there are differences" means that, there are differences. Clearly, that caveat would be sufficient for most to realize I was not making a one to one comparison.

3 years ago. Part of that price has been losing to Sparty for 4 years. We can't change what's happened. Just look forward to better days when we've re-stocked our talent and fully converted over to a pro-style offense. In the meantime, I'll have no problem coming back at any Spartan fan with "well at least whether we win or lose, we do it with class - unlike your team".
