Interesting Jay Riemersma radio interview.

Submitted by Firstbase on

I heard the last 5 minutes of an interview with Riemersma this morning. One thing he said that stood out was that the Michigan coaches have historically told recruits that they weren't necessarily the best athletes at their positions, but they were the type of players Michigan wanted because they would represent the university well while exhibiting positive character attributes that Michigan football has always tried to maintain.

Stopping short of endorsing RR, he thought if he wins this year, he'll "be okay."

and wins a national championship and runs a great clean program and does fair by the young men he recruits, we should all be so lucky.

Here's hoping...

have never been chosen for positive character attributes, they're just a bonus. Don't tell the people who don't understand that about the truth regarding Santa Claus, they will be devastated. Anyone else notice that the most vocal critics of RR on this board are only interested in negative posts about RR, and refrain from posting on any other topic? That is when they don't insert an anti-RR post into an unrelated thread. I'm all for dissenting opinion, and I'm sure almost all of us have our doubts, but there's an unhealthy fixation there.

First, this comment lacks credibility because on its face it makes no sense -- why would a coach try to crush the ego of a 17 year old kid he is trying to impress by telling him he is not athletic, even if that is the truth? Kind of like asking a girl to marry you, and saying at the same time, "even though you're not the best looking gal around."

Second, even if true, historically recruiting kids who were not relatively good athletes (and telling them that) got us a national championship in 97 and some other very good years, and so imagine what we will do now that we are recruiting kids who are among the fastest/strongest at their position?

I can't wait.

But I heard Riemersma on the Huge Show yesterday (no endorsement of that terrible show), and was reminded about how often it was brought up by announcers that Riemersma had originally been a QB. This was probably the most oft repeated human interest story until DRob and his untied shoes came to Ann Arbor.

But maybe this is old news but saw this on him as well:

"Seeking "a return to our (Republican Party) conservative principles," Riemersma has announced that he will run for the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican in Michigan's 2nd congressional district. That seat is currently held by Rep. Peter Hoekstra who is vacating it to run for governor of Michigan"

When equality isn't enough, people find other reasons to hold people down. Maybe someone can better explain the ethical types of people Michigan has always had? I'm just sick of people having scarlet letters before they do anything and former players doing nothing to fight the stereotypes.
I.E.- Riemersma explaining the "high standard" players "used" to be held to before saying RR will "be alright if he wins." That's insinuating that the standard now is different while covering himself in a half assed way by stating the obvious.
I support blue all the way, I'm just sick of this B.S. and it's not just in the Freep.
