Insulting Fandom

Submitted by cozy200 on
So, random thought on this sluggish Friday. Maybe sharknado has my brain in liquid form? I have a question, ok probably more of a statement.

Does it insult you when someone (in your office, circle of associates, or even close friends) know about your intense love for all things Umich, claim they are fans as well, but just don't know who our incoming stud RB's are? Or "hey, i heard we JUST landed a really good DB for next year".

When you approach so called "fan" to rap a bit around the water cooler about the fresh coat of paint on the Big House, they look at you like a deer in the headlights?

Forgive grammar errors, its early and I'm tired.

who is a big Michigan fan. He doesn't check out blogs though. He kind of has a life I guess. He makes fun of me, and hates when I talk about players he never heard of during games. But then at parties when he gets into conversations about Michigan football/basketball, he always pulls me in the conversation to make him seem more knowledgable.

He respects my knowledge, but I'm jealous of his ignorance. You know, it can be blissful at times.

Usually, I don't mind the Michigan fans who don't follow that closely.  However, it got to me during the RichRod era.  My uncle used to go on and on about how RichRod wasn't a good guy because he trashed his office on his way out of West Virginia (or whatever other ridiculous stuff was alleged) and because he committed so many horrible crimes during stretch-gate.  Any attempt to correct him, or even chime in with a more nuanced perspective, was lost on him.

Ignorant fans are by far the worst when controversy strikes. The allegations even included felonies; at least two people I encountered regularly offered the opinion that he should be rotting in prison.  I don't mind people who don't know anything and admit their ignorance one bit. It's the mind-blowing stupidity of people who don't have a clue and act otherwise.

I'm not a grad but I know the teams backwards and forewords. Seen every game for the past 15 years. I know people who are grads that can't name 5 players. Yet I always get busted on for not being a grad..

As a college football fan I pretty much know everything about Michigan and every other team we play just so I'm well rounded in potential football arguments with dumb sparty or cockeye fans

Since you know pretty much everything about Michigan, let alone every other team we play, perhaps you should consider starting your own blog. Oh, and minus a bazillion points for the use of "cockeye" - which should probably receive the same treatment as those who use the word "Spartina."

to be honest I am a major sports snob. I tend to think that I am a bigger sports fan than the average Joe so this entitles me to wear my invisible "you're not a real sports fan" hat. kind of sad but true.

I think recruiting is a specialized offshoot of fandom, for a subset of nutcases like us who can't get enough.  I know a ton of diehard loyal fans who don't follow recruiting at all, and that's fine.  I think it's more unusual to keep track of recruiting than otherwise.

This is such an awful thread and the OP should feel bad for posting it. This is the type of shit that would be posted on RCMB.

I went to almost every home basketball game this year. I also went to @Northwestern and Atlanta for the Final game. Almost every game I went to I posted a pic of the court from the stands right when I got there. I'd get a few likes and a couple people saying they were jealous or I was a true fan. But not a whole lot else. Then we beat Syracuse to go to the Final game and everybody on my feed is a Michigan basketball fan meanwhile I've been living and dying with this team since...to say November wouldn't even be fair to me. Those fans, my friend...those are the fans that annoy me.
