Inside Michigan Football - what happened to the production values?

Submitted by MBAgoblue on
Just caught the show for the first time this year, and HD is nice, but what is the deal with the horribly low, public access level production values in the interview segments? -- Handheld, shaky camera work; -- Odd, annoying zoom into close-ups; -- Random, generic stadium table dragged in front of a window with a view of the parking lot. The editing, bumpers, player interviews and Brandy's interviewing are all still excellent, but the rest is markedly worse and more amateurish. Was the this a special situation or the same as week one? The high table and bar stools with RR last year was nothing special, but that was just odd for a show in production for decades.

It was a great weekend and a great start.  It takes a grump to find a reason to complain.  I'm so happy I wouldn't have even noticed the production values if I hadn't clicked on this thread.  Now, I like them even more.

You want no-nonsense, unpretentious Brady Hoke?  You get a no-nonsense, unpretentious "Inside Michigan Football."

Things worth doing are worth doing well. This is not done well and does not approach the level of excellence Michigan fans all tell me they expect. To me unpretentious is not a synonym for amateurish.

This is Michigan. We don't need flashy. It's going to be tremendous we are going to touch people. It's not about being fancy. This is Michigan.

Hoke is cool on there and the way he handles himself has got to be appealing to recruits. Like every other time he's in the media. My one criticism on content is I'd like to see Hoke directly addressing the highlights that Brandstatter is describing. Bo used to be great at that.  The best was when they'd have a big gainer and he'd note why that wasn't a particularly well-blocked play.

While they are at it, they should just call it Michigan Replay, and film the thing the same night of the game like they used to before Rich Rodriguez.

We're never going to see the Michigan Replay name come back.  It's owned by the former producer of the show, not the University, and it seems he was pretty much resigned to the fact of retiring it when the previous format went by the wayside.  Better for the University's bottom line, too.

That being said, a man can dream, can't he?

I want the 70ish, semi-porno theme music back.  That song brings back so many great memories of watching Bo, Mo and Lloyd breaking down Michigan highlights.  As another poster pointed out, the best part was watching them gripe about how something was wrong with a play that went for 70 yards and a TD.   The death of Michigan Replay just plain sucks.  Period.

With the magic of DVR, bit torrents and extensive highlight/interview footage up on MGoBlue.com the night of the game, can someone please tell me one relevant advantage Michigan Replay would have in today's world other than giving one the pleasure of feeling like a nostalgic old fart?

It was a great show in its time and I grew up with it, but I think its time has passed.

I literally JUST finished watching the show on my DVR, then came here and found this thread. Totally agree re: the camera work. Somebody somewhere thought it'd be cool to do this floating cam thing, and the way-too-close close-ups of Hoke. It's not. It's stupid. It made me feel vertigo-ish.

Michigan Replay/Inside Michigan Football was filmed at the Crisler Production Studio which is currently being constructed upon, just like the rest of Crisler.  Hopefully it will be done pretty soon. Right now they're doing the football post game pressers in the visiting media room instead of the studio. I can see it making everything more difficult, especially  to get that 24 hour turnaround.

The swinging zoom/close-ups bothered me as well, although otherwise I'm happy to have 22 minutes of highlights/interviews devoted exclusively to Mich..

Yeah, another vote for Bo era replay. You would think DB would also want the same version we all cherish. He surely doesn't think this current form is equal or better?Glad i'm not the only who thought the same thing. Must watch, but kinda painful.
