But I don't want a generic PBP guy

I'd rather a good generic PBP guy than a not-very-good one with sincere schtick.

This fall I'm forced to listen to the games on Sirius radio, and when Michigan is on the road I have to listen to the home announcers.  Plus, I listen to other non-Michigan games.   I've listened to my share of announcers.  They're all miles better than Brandstatter.

A good PBP guy will make the game 'come alive' in the mind of the listener.  A good PBP guy will feed the information about setting, context, and down-and-distance in a seamless way.

I have nothing against Brandstatter as a person, but he is simply not good at PBP.

This is the right way to formulate this opinion. Brandstatter has been a loyal, quality Michigan media personality for decades. He has been a solid color guy for both Michigan and the Lions and he has been a great host for Michigan Replay.

He just doesn't have the vocal pacing to perform play-by-play effectively. This is no slight on his intelligence, his other broadcasting skills, his worth as an individual, or my affection for him as a Michigan media personality. It's just not something he is that good at. He has some moments that aren't bad, and he has worked to get better... but it's just not his thing.

Play-by-play requires a pretty narrow set of characteristics. Just like there are a lot of people with good basketball skills that aren't cut out to be a center in the NBA, there are a lot of people who are good in media who aren't cut out to call games.

Three-men booths are hard in radio, but with Dierdorf on the team it might be worth a try. You need someone doing the job whose vocation and skill is radio play-by-play.

Glad my intent came through.  I got a lot of love for Jim and wouldn't want to see him leave unless it was on his own terms.

They could try and see if Dan Miller was interested in spending more time with Jim on the weekends.

Or Dan Dickerson.  It's not like the Tigers are going to be doing anything in the fall for the foreseeable future.

Love him or not, Brandstatter has got to go. He is the worst PBP voice of the big 6 radio crews (Pistons, Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, U-M, & MSU). I can't listen to Michigan football on the radio any longer. Blaha is far better on the MSU broadcast.

Brandstatter is a TERRIBLE play by play guy.  He and Deirdorf are constantly stepping all over each other to add their analysis, meanwhile neither one is giving score, time, and down-and-distance half the time. As annoying as Blaha is, at least you can count on him to tell you there is "four and twenty-two left in the half" (4:22).

But even as bad as Brandy is, Will Teeman (sp?) is the worst play by play I guy I have every heard, doing MSU basketball. You honestly can't even tell who has the ball half the time.

Nothing wrong with having "homer" announcers, but the standard really needs to be higher for a PBP guy.

Gregg Daniels (Free Beer for GR people) has expressed tons of interest in the job...I wish they would give him a shot. He calls the biggest national games for Compass Media Networks (including Michigan) and does an amazing job with the PBP side of things. Gregg and Brandy are the way to go.

I really enjoy listening to Dierdorf, and learn from him.  I think we are lucky to have him doing color commentary.  While I miss Beckman, Dierdorf is knowledgeable, smooth, and approaches the game from a Michigan fan's perspective in a knowledgeable, professional way.  Just think he is the best and makes muting the TV and synching up the internet broadcast with the TV worthwhile.
