Indiana predictions: Spleen, Manball or Manball Spleen

Submitted by triangle_M on

Vitals:

Game is at 3:30 on BTN.  O/U: 67  Mich: -9.5

Livestream or just go to vipbox.co

Discuss:

So which one do we see today: Manball or Dismay?

Does the coaching staff do anything different (other than the obvious changes at guard)?

How does the defense hold up to Indiana's high paced offense?

Predict:

The Mathlete has called 24-21.  Our Overlord has the game a 30-26 victory.

I'm going to call it a 42-33 victory for the Maize and Blue.

Go Blue!

Happy to see that there are still a few people on this board who haven't lost all faith because our team, which is about 2/3 underclassmen, lost a game in 4OT on the road in a loud, hostile environment, with 2 missed shortish fg being the difference.

Hoke to 19-0 at home.

Hoke is 24-8 as a coach. He has a Sugar Bowl win. Hard to crucify him over 1 loss. Plus, look at all the other top teams losing this year and every year in college football. Just this week, #5 Stanford at Utah, #8 Louisville at home against UCF.

Perhaps his team averaging 3 losses and being ranked high are related? You know, his teams were never bad (eh, once), so people felt more comfortable ranking them higher than, say, Tennessee, who fluctuated between good and bad with regularity. This is, of course, ignoring the fact that preseason rankings are very stupid.

Carr's teams were often loaded with NFL talent. That and the name MIchigan is why they were consistenly ranked so high to start the season.

Edit: I am also not saying Carr was a terrible coach. He was a good coach as long as you are okay with three losses per season. There are a lot of teams that would be just fine with that.

You are delusional.  How long can we use "youth" as an excuse?  It's been an excuse for 6 straight years now.  News flash: every team suffers from attrition and "youth."  We currently have a senior wide receiver, a 4th year quarterback, two upperclassmen tackles (NFL draft picks, mind you), a senior running back.  And that's just on offense, where we've had the most trouble.  Do you know how many teams would kill for that amount of upperclassmen at those positions?

What a joke argument.  No team plays stacked with juniors and seniors at every position.

They have a senior wide receiver... and a bunch of underclassmen at wide receiver. They have two senior tackles... and the rest of the line are underclassmen. They have a fourth year QB... who has actually played real snaps at QB for less than a full season and who was a WR this time last year. They also have zero upperclassmen at TE.

I don't get this...

Your Senior tackles and WR are playing solid football. Your senior QB is wildly inconsistent and your youthful TE are developing (like your progress Jake Butt and welcome to WR Devine Funchess).

TE blocking is horrifying, turnovers killing us and no young lineman regardless of pedigree is "college ready".

They actually have a senior wide receiver (Gallon)...and Joe Reynolds, a senior, Jeremy Jackson, a senior, and Drew Dileo, a senior.

Again, this argument is absolutely nuts.  Nuts.  And BiSB, I love you, but that statement is wholly incorrect.

the team. Most of us were disappointed in the coaching, especially in the OT. that probably cost us the game. I personally enjoy the offense Coach Borgess employs but to foolishly attempt to win the game in OT using the same tactic that in regulation failed miserably and led to the worst running attack in the storied history of our program, well I think that is ample reason to be a tad upset.

Does weather play a factor in strategy? Are both teams going to try and air it out in the rain? Or will this force Michigan to go conservative so as to not turn the ball over?

I also came up from SC for the game. Froze my butt off at Comerica on Thurs. Looks like I'll be doing the same this afternoon in the Big House. Hopefully the end result will be better today... I also hope FSU dominates Clemson. Clemson fans are almost as unbearable as Ohio fans. 34-24 Michigan.

I too live in Columbia. Dang, we should drink some Bell's sometime. As bad as it can be dealing with the ESS EEE SEE fans in Cola, you should try dealing with the Clemson fools up in Greenville... Never had a fan base talk so much crap about Michigan other than Staee and Ohio fans. They are the reason I pull for the Gamecocks (when we aren't playing them in the Outback Bowl, of course).

At last check, I think we're still a 9.5 point favorite for this game, and the O/U on points was 67.5 by TeamRankings' analysis. Massey and TeamRankings have a slight disagreement about the estimated probability, with the former going with 58% and the latter closer to 75%. Here are some of the summary matchup predictions from TeamRankings:

Offense
Indiana Michigan
Yards/Play 6.2   5.7
Points/Play 0.460   0.562
Rush Play % 43.64%   60.82%
Pass Play % 56.36%   39.18%
Completion % 60.58%   58.82%
3D Conv % 44.00%   47.06%
RZ Scoring % 79.17%   88.00%
Defense
Indiana Michigan
Opp Yards/Play 5.5   4.5
Opp Points/Play 0.370   0.326
Opp Completion % 60.32%   52.63%
Opp 3D Conv % 49.40%   37.08%
Opp RZ Scoring % 77.27%   76.19%

Off the cuff, I will go with 40-24 good guys in this one. Indiana can score, but we can definitely slow them down. On defense, Indiana will Indiana typically in conference play.

Difficult than usual due to rain... We are forced to rush the ball more... Limited success.

Indiana - 28
Michigan - 17

Boooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

Good news is, Borges gets fired at halftime.

Unfortunately I predict Brady's perfect home record takes its first hit this afternoon.  I forsee significant O-line struggles which will hurt the offense no matter which style of play Borges chooses to employ.  And if, by our third possession Al is stil running two plays into the line before letting Devin throw on 3rd and 12 I predict the crowd will get ugly. And sadly, based on what I've seen this year coupled by what our coaches said this week, I DO think the vaunted "Tackle Over" Manball philosophy is far from dead.

Well I'm about ready to leave for the game (I live in Cleveland) so I hope like Hell I'm wrong.  But I can tell you that in close to 40 years of attending Michigan football this is the FIRST Indiana game I've ever thought we might lose.

Indiana 31- Michigan 20.
