Independence Bowl Open Thread

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

I am creating this a little early because I am stealing a moment on someone else's laptop at a family event.

So, this is the AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl - Missouri versus North Carolina, the battle of the 7-5 teams. It seems like it could be at least mildly entertaining, but we shall see, eh?

Have fun with it. Tomorrow, the Pizza Bowl open thread! Yeah....someone will need to create that thread for me. I'll be on the way home from work.

Meyer the Leyer already announced Fickell would be staying as DC, then oops, he hired someone else to be DC.....call them co DCs until Fickell quits.

and if RichRod had brought in a DC from a crap school like NC, where he had an undistinguished defense..........

Anyone else just dying for the damn Sugar Bowl to commence? Not counting the rest of today, it's still seven days away. Ugh.

I would settle in the meantime for a bowl with a decent crowd/atmosphere and two interesting teams. Hopefully ND-FSU can deliver. These Shreveport/St. Petersburg bowls in empty small stadiums are killing me

It's just a classic football name.

EDIT: Well, nothing kills a well-earned 1st and 10 like a fumble. Mizzou ball.

DOUBLE EDIT: If UNC's DC will be at OSU and we can still get 15 yards on a bad snap, I approve of this hire.

TRIPLE EDIT: Now I definitely approve of OSU's new defensive coordinator. TD Mizzou.

OH, CHRIST EDIT: Is UNC's mission to have all their drives from this time forward die before they begin? Play under review, but really, Tar Heels?

Somehow, I think the UNC DC hire was more about recruiting. Fickell is staying to call the defense, so there will be continued continuity. UNC has always recruited very well, and I believe getting him is an attempt to get a great recruiter on staff, and then some contingency for if/when Fickell leaves.

VT beat UNC 24-21. Gobbler Country breaks down the game, and one of the claims made is that UNC (Edit: Virginia Tech, not UNC) has trouble against teams with big, strong linemen (on both sides of the ball). Can't wait to see the game in the trenches at the Sugar Bowl.

...Renner channels his inner John Elway.

A great drive ends in a field goal. 31-10 Mizzou at halftime, and they get the ball to begin the 2nd half. This could be fun. It is beyond me why UNC did not try to just punch it in. Really?

If i was a NC fan on any level my TV would've just died a horrible, ugly death on that 3rd and goal call. Slow developing counter plays dont generally work against a 6 man front.

And that was coming out of a time out for God's sake.

I'm with you on that one. Even the UNC coach had his head down leaving the field. Even if you fail on the TD, at least there's a show of some confidence in winning the game. A FG just makes it look like the coach doesn't care if they lose but just wants to keep the score as close as possible.

"Well honey, you may not have noticed, but we're getting our ASS kicked.".

But at least the announcers says it's only a 3 score game.

I was not aware that you could extend a drive by netting negative rushing yards. This knowledge might come in handy in closer games.

EDIT: One case of hysterical blindness in the Mizzou secondary later, it's 31-17.

DOUBLE EDIT: I wonder if Mizzou is going to the SEC to get a lesser bowl than this one. Can going to the Independence Bowl every few years wear on a team?

Wow I am glad this will be Meyers DC next year. UNC has looked unimpressive on both sides of the ball and I know they probably don't have the talent OSU does on any given year but this is still not a well coached team. It's not like Mizzou is any more talented (in terms of guys that they recruit) than UNC.

Why did UNC not go for 2 after scoring their last td, to pull within 16? It at least technically pulls it to a two score game. And the announcers don't even make a mention of it. Does that show how little these teams care about winning the game?
