I thought Peppers said that while he respects key jersey numbers (like Woodson's #2), he mentioned that he wants to make his own mark with #5.

Chesson needs to keep 86.

Chesson is #86 and should be for his final season.

Agreed. Hines Ward, one of my favorite receivers, wore 86

It makes sense because it's a Bo schembechler tradition. Somewhere along the way we got the idea we had to destroy the traditions of Michigan football when we sucked. People said that the 100K needed to die last year etc. Places like Alabama have tons of these little traditions and they make the sport great.
February 14th, 2016 at 2:44 AM ^
it's completely not a Schembechler tradition, it's a Carr tradition if anything. Which is fine, I agree with your larger point.

Maybe Jim Harbaugh doesn't want Braylon Edwards to dictate who wears #1 on Jim Harbaugh's football team. No former player deserves to wield that kind of power over the program.
I am fine with Harbaugh reminding Edwards exactly who runs the team and who doesn't. It's a lesson Braylon needs to learn.

I very much dout that Harbaugh is combatative and insecure as you think. I also doubt that Braylon Edwards has ever been the person who assigned jersey number 1 to players. He does get a say. That's in writing, from the University, after he endowed the wearer of the #1 jersey (endowment was $500,000, do not chump change). But only a say.
Now I know a lot of people got irritated with BE after he expressed his displeasure at the assignment of the jersey to a freshman defensive back by RR, but those kinds of statements are just what people have to put up with in a country with free speech rules. That's a lesson taters need to learn.

I would not mind seeing a linebacker wear the #1 at Michigan. I'm not a big fan of the so-called number 1 jersey tradition. Whether the #1 is given to a receiver or to a player at another position, I hope it goes to an incoming player and is not "earned" by a current player.

As the Russians said, there was no news in Izvestia ("News") and no truth in Pravda ("Truth").

Unfortunately our own press is quickly becoming the same.

FWIW, I don't think this Clay Williams is any kind of source. AFAIK, his Twitter account is the first place this information has appeared. He follows me on Twitter and appears to be just a fan, not any kind of reporter.
So take this with a grain of salt.

Clay is pretty much the younger version of WD. He lives in enemy territory and bleeds blue. He makes "edits" for lots of players, specially Michigan recruits.
Harbaugh invited him to attend practice at Schembechler last year. So he has that on you Magnus.
