The importance of beating our rivals (WARNING: meaningless hypothetical)

Submitted by amir_al-muminin on

I don't believe we've seen a thread like this since the off-season, and I'm sure most of us are thankful for that. However, now that we are 5-0, I just have to ask: would you rather end the regular season 7-5 with wins over MSU and OSU, or 10-2 with losses to both of those teams?

I want to beat MSU but be trailing at the half. Lose to Iowa but be winning after the first quarter. I hope we are tied with PSU after regulation but win it in the third OT. I hope we beat Illinois, but only after trailing for the first 57 minutes of the game. Here's hoping we lose to Purdue, but someone different is leading at the end of each quarter of the game. Hoping that we beat Wisconsin after giving up a score on their first drive then tied at the half, then getting the go ahead score midway through the third quarter. I want to beat OSU, but only if we can do it with 5 FG's and holding Pryor to less than 100 yds of total offense, if we can't do that then I hope we lose.

I think I'd like to beat MSU and OSU while losing to everyone else. They appear to be two of the best teams left on our schedule, and I think that would provide some hope that we'll eventually be able to compete with the Big10's upper-echelon. Besides, f OSU man. As an aside to everyone that jumped in to criticize the OP: your "self-moderation" is really just bullying directed toward newer members. If we can't pointlessly speculate on an internet message board, then where can we? Others can keep their "useless" posts about a game played among 18 - 22 year olds to mlive when you keep your "important" ones to a private conversation ... which, by the tenor of the "self-moderation" crowd, is the desire anyways.

You say this:

If we can't pointlessly speculate on an internet message board, then where can we?

then say

Others can keep their "useless" posts about a game played among 18 - 22 year olds to mlive when you keep your "important" ones to a private conversation

so you kind of answer your own point.  Nobody is saying that you can't have your voice, but there are places where you can post a 1-off conversation topic without creating a whole new entry on the MGoBoard.  What you see as bullying, I see as maintenance of a standard that makes this site great; lose it, and we might as well just be mlive or the freep.

This is a fair point, and I'd have no problem if someone would have pointed this out and kindly directed me elsewhere.  Instead, I got a bunch of smart-ass comments.  That is not efficient maintenance, that is bullying.

you do things that you wish you could take back.  Fortunately, your post has an "EDIT" option.

I trust that you'll do the right thing.

Each one of you is more clever than the last.  Thanks to the poster that actually answered my question.

I just wanted to know how badly other Michigan fans want to beat our rivals this year, and if they're willing to sacrifice the rest of the schedule to do so.  Again, totally meaningless, since obviously, what you or I want has no impact whatsoever on the season...but I knew what kind of post this was, and I put a big warning in the thread title for people like you.

Frankly, if you saw that and still clicked just to make this remark, you're kind of a bad person.

^This doesn't make sense, but I think I understand what you mean.  However, you've now expended much more energy by making asinine comments in this thread than if you had simply ignored my post altogether.  If it's not worthy of your time, don't respond.

As evidenced by your MGoPoints, you are obviously very good at posting on MGoBoard.  What I don't understand is why you would go out of your way make someone feel bad about not being so good at it.

Anyway, I apologize.  I've learned my lesson.  Hopefully we can all move on.

I don't mind hypotheticals, but my problem with this one is that it's implausible. It is highly unlikely that we will beat the two toughest teams on our remaining schedule and lose to the rest. The other scenario you mention (10-2, losses to osu and msu) is plausible, and I'd take that and a possible rose bowl berth to the bank. But it would still suck immensely to lose to osu and msu, and a little bit of me would die inside.

and to lose to OSU and finish 7-5.To add perspective to how my noggin processes information, I was the the kind of numbnutz who also predicted that Michigan would manhandle and embarrass Indiana on Saturday.

I'd take 7-5 with quality wins over MSU and OSU, because unlike some people I never had any illusions that Michigan could win a Big Ten title in 2010 while fielding a defense that happily allows 433 yards and 25 points per game.

The way things are going, Michigan's chances vs. MSU, Iowa and OSU are getting worse (because all three play pretty good rush defense), while I think UM's chances against Wiscy and Penn State might have improved.
