Impact Defensive Players 2010

Submitted by Smitty D on
I was just curious which players everyone out there thinks can helps us Immediately next year? 1. JT Tuner, question is at safty or corner. I know he has been practicing at corner but if warren stays and woolfook is on the other side how does he not play safty 2. William Campbell- He seen extensive playing time on Saturday and looked pretty good. He also enrolled early and has lost a ton of weight getting himself into shape, I think with 1 more year of conditioning, and the SAME d cordinator lol he can impact 3. Brandin Hawthorne- I know he was undersized but he enrolled early and played on special teams this year, he has speed that kills and a very high motor from what I seen on film. I guess my only problem with him is what position?

Hawthorne is from Pahokee. And you just don't fawk with the boys from the Muck... But seriously, I love Odoms and Vince Smith and I hope Hawthorne can follow suit and impress us next year.

I don't know if this came across on the televised version, but Fitzgerald made some picture-perfect tackles and was nearly always in on the plays when he was in the game. I don't know at which position he will land, but he seems to have instinct, speed, and hits.

It was also refreshing to see opposing running backs being taken down by Fitz for a 1 or 2 yard gain instead of Ezeh grabbing ankles after a 6 or 7 yard gain. Hooray recognition! Hooray speed! I know the LB play still was inconsistent and overall bad, but from the POV of an untrained eye in section 6, Fitzgerald seemed to be an upgrade over Ezeh as far as reading and reacting to the offense.

A name people continue to forget, Adrian Witty. If he's on the team in the spring, I think he's going to be a very good player before all is said and done.

Ik someone who went to school and was best friends with Denard at Deerfield. He has said that there were actually more D1 college programs coming to see Witty (before the senior season ending injury) rather than Denard. And he has also said that Witty is faster. I'm looking forward to Witty making a big impact next year for us.

Witty was on the 4x100 Deerfield Beach State championship relay with Denard last year, so he's got speed. But he is not faster than Denard. Witty ran the 2nd leg of the relay, Denard anchored that relay. The fastest guy is always the anchor.(I apologize for the swimming relay terminology; I'm not sure if it's the same for track) Results from FHSAA track states last year at: http://www.fhsaa.org/tr/2009/state/4_results.htm

As a former 4x1 runner myself the anchor is always your fastest runner while the 2nd leg is always the second fastest person. These are the straight-a-way postions where your fastest runners can really gain on everyone.

Anyone know if a guy like commit Wilkins is capable of playing the middle LB? Seems to have the right size/speed for the defensive scheme. I have not watched any of his HS film to know if he is exclusively an outside player.

indicates he's much better playing in a box which isn't something MLBs should be doing. I'll be interested to see if they go with more of a traditional 4-3 next year considering Big Will should be ready for full time duty next year. I just can't see not having him and Martin in together with RVB and Roh at ends. Throw Lalota and whoever else returns into the mix with some recruits for brief blows. The back seven could be really interesting if they land CC, Grimes, Knight and Witty to add to DW, JT, and MRob along with Gordon, Floyd, and Woolfolk in the secondary. Adding Furman and Olaniyan would bolster LBs of JB, MJones, Hawthorne, Ezeh, Mouton plus add in BSmith and Isiah Bell to the mix. Put most into their second year in the same system and reaction time should increase dramatically hoping leading to more plays being made. That would be a pretty fast but young D. Will and Martin to create havoc in the middle with Roh coming off the edge. Would love to be able to add Jeff Luc to the mix but not going to happen.

is you have a true freshman backing up Tate and no depth behind it whatsover. Denard will stay at QB next year and move to a different position in his jr year(probably at slot WR where you can best utilize his speed).

Guys like Bell, Hawthorne, Turner, Mike Jones, Teric Jones (at CB?) Thomas Gordon (and I'd really like to see Cameron Gordon move to LB). And Oh YEah JB Fitzgerald and Kenny Demens. Now all these guys will have had at least two years of Choclolate Milk--it's time to see the Barwis Effect take, er, effect--and all will have had two years under Robinson. I'm thinking the most help HAS to come on the defensive side (DUH!)--if it doesn't........Well, I shudder at that possibility

I think many people have forgotten that RVB was being hyped like crazy at DE going into this season. He was forced to move inside because of depth issues, but DE is his true position. If Campbell mans up and locks down the Nose, allowing Martin to move over to the 3-tech DT (where he is better suited, IME), then RVB loses a bit of his DT bulk from this year, gets faster, and slides out to his true position. Of course, this depends heavily on Campbell stepping up. If Campbell is who we think he can be next year, then RVB will be all conference at DE.

No one has mentioned Brandon Smith yet either. He could be a big factor since he'll play at one of two positions of need. I think that if the linebackers and safeties soak up some coaching, we could be alright.

campbell is probably going to start at nose, martin at dt, van bergen at de, roh at quick. on passing situations, i wouldnt be surprised to see ken wilkins coming in for van bergen. maybe lalota. how is he as a pass rusher? at strong side linebacker, its either mike jones, brandin hawthorne, or marvin robinson. one of those newcomers will make an impact (positive, i hope). inside backer, its probably going to again be a combination of ezeh, mouton, fitzgerald and leach. but maybe isiah bell gets some time in there!? hes put on a TON of weight!? id be very surprised if turner isn't starting, at either cb or fs. warren and woolfolk get two of the other spots in the secondary. ss is the interesting battle. williams/kovacs obviously have the experience. vlad/gordon will push with a year of experience under their belt. if TONY JEFFERSON commits, i believe that he is the guy on day one. ...also, cullen christian could seriously push woolfolk for a starting position. if these last couple of months of recruiting go well, we could be looking at three new starters in the secondary... NT: Campbell DT: Martin DE: Van Bergen/WILKINS/LALOTA Q: Roh M: Ezeh/Fitz W: Mouton/Leach/BELL S: JONES/HAWTHORNE/ROBINSON $: JEFFERSON...Williams/Kovacs...EMILIEN/GORDON F: TURNER C: Warren C: CHRISTIAN

Honestly, all this defense will need to be is mediocre and it could all be gravy. Experienced Spread n' Shred Offense + Mediocre Defense = 3-4 more wins easily.
