I get the size concerns, but the kid has already shown that he belongs at the high D 1 level. And given his AAU experience you would have thought that he would have at least had a bevy of mid-major offers. Oh well, their loss is our gain.

Maybe.  But don't underestimate the value of having a guy that can dribble the ball into the front court.  Not having even 2 guys (maybe Douglass could) who could do that last year kept Burke on the floor roughly 40 minutes per game last year.  It's also part of why Brundidge could never see the court last year.

Except for the other thing. That hurts the most. But the lack of respect hurts the second most.

Remember Spike had an extra year of HS, by going the prep school route. Like McGary, Spike is a 20 year old freshman. Both Spike and Mitch are older than Trey Burke.

Spike probably matured a bit later than some kids and needed the extra year before entering college. Being 20 is probably a big advantage for Spike, but more importantly, getting the extra year of exposure and experience made a huge difference.

If I remember correct his offers (or just schools recruiting him maybe) were Ivy's and schools like UVM.  He had D1 opportunities at smaller schools where his size and athleticism weren't going to limit his potential like they will at a power conference.

Sure he is serviceable- but I don't think that's a big surprise.  He was a high IQ guy that would handle the ball well and not make mistakes but not stand out either- and that is what he has shown so far- and I doubt he will ever become much more than that.

I think it's exceedingly rare.  Apparently Scottie Pippen and Jeff Hornacek were.  I think more guys do either JuCo or go to really small schools then transfer if they dont get big school scholarships initially.  Also the whole prep school thing happens.  CJ Lee was a walk-on.

Except for the other thing. That hurts the most. But the lack of respect hurts the second most.

I think the achievements of Spike have been really underated due to the success of the other freshmen. Point guard is the hardest position for a freshman to play and the fact that there isn't a HUGE dropoff when our all-american pg is amazing! Granted we've only seen him in stretches of about 4 minutes or less with just him at the point, at least he is getting some time in as a two guard (a little bit of a 1.5 guard) with Burke is great for the future.

I just hope Beilein insert all five freshman in at the same time.  Spike, Levert, Staukaus, GRIII, and McGary seems like they can handle the pressure.  Four of them were on the court at the same time yesterday.
