Illinois ends the game on a huge 13-2 run to defeat #1 Indiana, making a lay-up off of an inbounds play with .5 seconds left. Thought this deserved its own thread for the people who weren't following the Thursday night thread, and for a possible posbang to see Tom Crean and Home Depot eat it.
Illinois stuns Indiana
Angry Number One Hating God. Believe.
Does that mean we want to lose against Wisconsin so we'll be number 2 against State?
Regression to the mean for the #1 team!
They might get a couple of first place votes, but no way would that one half be more impressive then full game victories over OSU and @ Wisconsin.
Besides, Duke is about to win by single digits in a home game where they were up by 21 at half time. Does that sound like #1 worthy to you? Only if you watched the first half. Also NC State has never been considered an elite or even a very good defense their year, it is not like Duke put those number up vs a high caliber defense.
in a response to an "Avoid the #1 Jinx" post
Maybe, but honestly, we aren't deserving of number 1 either, we are good, but I think we have some issues that better get resolved quickly. Our half court sets involve way too much standing around and watching and defensively we are far from elite. At this point, I could give two craps where we are rated, I'm thankful we are better than the last 20 years but I just want us to get better in the next few games...I think we have some kinks to work out...
Good thing Duke didn't shoot 41 free throws...
What a play! That was an amazing comeback and last second shot by the Illini. We win on Saturday and we're back to #1
BEAT WISCO. ENTER EL #1
I-L-L -- I-N-I !!!
Awesome game to watch! People who didn't see it, check out the Sportscenter highlights after while. It'll be worth it!
While I want to beat Wiscy, I'm not sure I want the #1 ranking that would likely come with it!
I thought for sure they were done going down by 14 in the second half. What a comeback.
Griffey's reaction after making the game winning bucket was awesome. A combination of "did I get it off in time?" and "holy shit, did that just happen?"
Thanks for playing the extra on the set, Needs
When it comes to seeding in the tournament. Similar opponent records are going to matter. We beat Illinois, they lost! As sad as Illinois athletics are, I really like John Groce.
Which is why Saturday is so important. Wisconsin won at Indiana and this is our only game against them.
Yeah but wed still have to beat IU at home. If for some reason we lost then none of that matters.
wed = Weed?
wed = Wed(ding)?
wed = we'd?
wed = Wednesday?
Also, D.J Richardson snapped off tonight. 23(?) points. Some killer shots (& threes) down the stretch to give them a chance. He needs to go suck on a lemon tonight, he was awesome.
I didn't even bother watching until O saw it was tied with like a minute left. Wow, I need to watch the replay. Thanks Illinois!
That was one of the best comebacks I have ever seen.
I'm glad we got the other Illinois when we played.
2012-13 Big Ten STANDINGS
|#12 Michigan State||8-2||--||19-4|
|#10 Ohio State||7-3||1||17-5|
Dear Penn State:
I suggest that you win one of your next two games (@ Nebraska, vs. Iowa). The last six will not be fun (@ Michigan, @ Illinois, vs. Michigan, @ Minnesota, @ Northwestern, vs. Wisconsin).
Wouldn't Indiana have the tiebreaker against us?
The regular season title is purely conference wins and losses. Tiebreakers and head-to-head matchups only factor in when it's time for the Big Ten Tourney
In case of ties, the standings list the team with best overall winning percentage first without taking tiebreakers into account. So Michigan's 21-2 (.913) is better than Indiana's 20-3 (.870), which in turn is better than MSU's 19-4 (.826).
Potentially heading to EL as the number 1 team again...
This Illini team fought back and closed out strong. Great game and great ending. Just goes to show you that the B1G is just nasty especially at home.
Zeller got caught watching the paint dry
Reference sir. Shooter would be proud.
Indiana needed Dikembe Mutombo on that last layup, how on earth do you leave him wide open?!? Oh Zeller you dingus.
Heh Indiana was up nine with 3:30 left and I shut it off...
If Duke loses then four of the five top teams will have lost and hopefully it would stay there.
I'm torn . . . was I supposed to root for IU or our "archrivals" to lose?
Kidding. Great game.
maybe you should change the title to "Hoosiers lose snowflakes thread"
I think the title is ok.
This snowflake meme is out of control.
That's my bad.
Are you fucking kidding me!!?? I turn it off with 9 minutes to go to watch parks and rec, then go on the app to see this!? To think I missed this for a food poisoning gimmick episode....
Right before Illinois started their 13-2 run to finish the game. The road is rough in the B1G. Win like this could secure Illinois a tourney bid.
Illinois is in as long as they go 4 - 4 down the stretch. They should beat Nebraska, Penn State, Purdue, and Northwestern. Then they'd have 20 wins, including W's over Butler, Gonzaga, Ohio State, and Indiana. Three out of four of those games are at home, and the road game is Northwestern... which, well, might as well be a home game for Illinois.
"Illinois is in as long as they go 4 - 4 down the stretch. They should beat Nebraska, Penn State, Purdue, and Northwestern. "
Yes, except they will probably lose to Nebraska and Penn State but make up for it by beating MSU and Minnesota or something.
When there are this many number 1 teams, there are no number 1 teams.
I don't even want to be ranked No. 1 with this craziness. Love that this makes a B1G (regular season) title a little easier though!!!
With the way the dominoes are falling, even if we lose as #1, we will be right back at the top after a couple games. I'm cool with being #1, Michigan is not going to lose at MSU. I'm actually more worried about Wisconsin and our team relying on the 3 ball when they are only alotted 15 possessions in the game.
Uhh, who cares whos #1 now?.
Any time a top 5 team loses its good news. That much more likely to get the #1 overall seed in the tourney.
That was my point, as long as we keep winning, being ranked #1 doesn't mean much...not sure why people would downvote that.
I didn't downvote you, but if the only way to avoid being #1 is to lose, then . . . no thanks. Give me the ranking.
never said i wanted M to lose at all...just that i wouldn't be mad at voters overlooking UM for the #1 ranking for the next couple of weeks
Not only will indiana lose on the road to Michigan, ohio, state, minny. They just lost to illinois.
They just can't win on the road.
Doesn't bode well for their tourney chances, that's for sure.
Easy there. You're implying a LOT. Who says IU won't come kick our ass again at home? Who says they'll lose in Columbus. And do you really think they'll lose to Minnesota? I don't.
Name me the last significant road win indiana has had.
No one wins on the road in the Big Ten. Tonight made that quite clear.
Michigan beat illinois by double digits on the road and top-10 minnesota on the road this season.
You have caught me in an exaggeration. I cede the point.
but we dominated Illinois and Minnesota at their place ...
I understand your point but am just pointing out that what you're implying is honestly improbable, at least in my opinion. If we were talking about a mediocre team then yes, I'd be on board to say they're going to lose their road games and probably win at home. We could be arguing how good Indiana really is, I suppose, but if we agree that Indiana is one of the better teams in the country I honestly don't think they'll lose 4 more games because they're "on the road". I guess I just feel they're better than that. But, as tonight shows, sh*t happens and anything's possible, so.
The Last Significant Road Win Indiana Has Had
the SF is great and all, but this really speaks to the depth of the league and how good M has been in the 1st half of the conference schedule. We have 2 tough losses on the road to 2 of the top 3 contenders (besides us of course). 2-2 in this 4 games stretch is all we need to pretty much lock a B10 title, maybe outright.
the Home Depot reference, please?
Autocorrect for Oladipo?
Seriously, autocorrect does some strange things...
Karma for his game against us.
I really wish I knew how to post gifs.
They're all pretty great, but I think the best reaction comes from the first shirtless fan at the bottom of the screen.
I could watch that all night!
Holy shit it's 8:30...I gotta get to work.
What the hell is Zeller doing there? Didn't get confused on a switch - just looked like he thought this game was going to OT regardless. Weird.
Looks like he is trying to get it out of his hands as fast as possible.
I wish the camera would have been on Crean after that play.
He looked like Tom Arnold
People need to embrace being number 1. Why would you be scared? This is Michigan!
Win in Madison and we're #1 again!!
#2 Florida and #1 Indian lost, will we end up being #1 if we take care of business against Wisconsin? Crazy season...
Come on guys..I know it's been awhile since we've been elite but let's try to at least act like we've been there before (even though its been awhile).
We're obviously #1. FLA lost by 25 to a team we beat. Kansas lost to TCU, Indiana lost to Illinois who we beat on the road. Try not to act so surprised..jesus
Huge not only for the Big 10 title race but for the race to get the #1 seed in the midwest and stay relatively close to home for the regional.
HUGE! So your saying there's a chance?!? We just need to hold up our end if the deal and win at home...
I dont think I want the #1 ranking heading into East Lansing. It's asking for an infuriating loss
but to not get it means we'd have to lose at WIsconsin, which does not guarantee not having an infuriating loss at MSU.
Nice losers mentality. I'm sure MSU will try much harder if Mich is #1 as opposed to #2.
God damnit you guys. Why is it so hard to admit we're probably the best and most complete team in the nation?
I'm with you. And if you go back you'll see I called my shot and said Michigan was the #1 team in the country way back before the season even started. I took shit for it but I said we were the best and Indiana was overrated as Hell.
We are one of them, but I think it's a stretch to say that Michigan is THE best and most complete team. The "completeness" is particularly hard to defend, since Michigan has non-trivial issues with defense and free throws.
Not the most complete team, I don't know who is but we need to figure out our half court set issues, too much standing around while trey dribbles.
How can this team have 3 wins against top 10 teams and lose at home to Northwestern? And on the road to Purdue?
Suck on that, Oladipo.
people would stop worrying about being ranked # 1, I'd rather win and beat Wisc, get ranked on top and worry about future crap when we get to it
Does Illinois get in at like 6-12 in conference? 7-11 and they've gotta be in, right? 20-11 with wins over Indiana, OSU, Gonzaga (road), and Butler (neutral court).
Such a weird resume. Makes sense with how tough the Big Ten is, but man were they playing above their heads OOC.
That was an awesome last play!!! I loved seeing the Illinois bench and the crowd go CRAZY!
I'm not superstitious about the #1 position, I just think there are 5 teams capable of being the best team in the country on any given night. There just isn't a clear-cut dominating team this year. This is going to be one of the most exciting NCAA tournaments in a while and not just because Michigan has an incredibly realistic chance to cut down the nets (although it sure helps).
This makes it harder for me to decide if I hold my nose Sunday and root for OSU at home vs. Indiana
Tough call but I'm going to root for Ohio. I disllike IU just a little bit more and would love to see them get another loss and Shehee annoys me like no other player.
Huh, that's crazy talk!
They have to play each other twice, so it's best for them to split and each get a loss.
Just think of it as rooting for Indiana to lose. That is the best outcome to help Michigan win the Big Ten.
They have a worse conference record than IU, plus we have already split the series.
Wow. They play a game away from their home court and they lose. Shocking. The advantage they have on their home court is disgusting.
They've lost a game at home. They've actually lost one each (away, home, neutral). This week is a classic example why you never take anything for certain in college basketball.
That game changed quickly..I still can't believe the last inbounds play..layup!
I absolutely love half of the reactions in this thread. "I don't even wanna be #1 again! That's asking to be knocked off! How frustrating would that be?!"
If you were to tell any Michigan basketball fan at the beginning of last season that we would be having this conversation, they'd laugh at us. It's crazy to see how far they've come to toy around with the question: "We're #1 again, is that a good thing?"
The first was v. Arizona. (down by 8, 1 minute to go)
Beat Wisconsin! Bring on the Number 1 ranking. All other worries be damned!
On a side note, I just realized Wisconsin only has to play us and Indiana once each. What a joke.
Maybe so, but Wiscy having only one game with us means one less game we're forced to watch them in (in)action
The Big Ten is goddamn brutal this year.
But seriously, get your tickets to EL now. Prices are going to get astronomical in a hurry.
This helps us in the conference race. And technically, this was Indiana's easiest remaining road game. They have to go to OSU, to Minnesota, to MSU and to Crisler. Tom Creen is going to learn that not facing a ranked team on the road until the second week of February has it's drawbacks.
We take care of business at home and hopefully steal at least one road game against MSU or Wisconsin and we're in perfect position for the B1G title. But MSU needs to lose a game or two to give us some breathing room.
Bill Walton insists that Michigan isnt a top 5 team because we lack good big men. Mitch McGary, Jon Horford, and Jordan Morgan disagree.
Walton hates Michigan basketball as much as I hate Notre Dame football.
I know he despised the Fab Five but he seems to hate us as if they were still on the roster.
Bill Walton is a racist troll.
Bill Walton... Lol
thing during the game where one could text in who they thought the best sixth man in the country was. I vocalized "McGary" to no one in paricular since I was alone in my garage at the time. Didnt see if he was an option or not.
I feel that the college game is truly a guard's game. Especially in the tourney. The guards can do so much more to determine the pace of a game. Like push the tempo on the break. Slow down the other team by applying an annoying press. Distribute the ball and make his teammates better. Generate his own offense off of the dribble.
Don't get me wrong. Big men are important. They get rebounds and score in the paint. Some even lead their team in scoring. But they rarely decide the game like guards do.
If IU were down by 1 with 10 sec left, who gets the ball, Oladipo or Zeller?
Frank Caliendo hasn't done his spot on impersonation of him in awhile.
Let's beat Wisconsin on Saturday and reclaim #1!!!
Do we really want to be #1 going into East Lansing. That ranking this year hasn't been a very good omen.
Are you suggesting we lose to Wisconsin?
Might as well get used to the pressure. Michigan will probably be no worse than a 2 seed come tourney time. They got to get used to people gunning for them!
Tonight is just further proof that the Big Ten tourney is going to be crazy. What a weekend that will be.
@ NW, @Minn and @UI looking much better now. Reminder of the fact that we have two exceptionally difficult games facing us.
I was watching and saw they were down 11 with just over 3 minutes left, thought it was over. Was wrong. What are we drinking?
And that game was beautiful. Especially since it was Zeller (a.k.a. White Jesus) that lost track of his man for the lay in.
And Oladipo who had the turnover in the last 10 seconds to give Illinois a chance to win. Couldn't have scripted a better ending.
Just shows that any team in the B1G can light it up any given night. What a comeback!
Hopefully we learn from some of these upsets at come out and play our best game!
Go check out @champaign_room on twitter. He's cracked; fallen madly in love with Tyler Griffey, as well as everyone else. Hilarious stuff.
So Indiana clearly is not the same team away from the friendly confines of Assembly Hall. I like our chances against them at home. We need to take it to these guys.
and neither are we, away from Crisler Center. Fact is, the home team has a huge advantage, especially with the refs.
Everyone's better at home, but we beat this same Illinois team by double digits in Champaign. We might struggle at elite team's venues, but if we play an average/below avergae Big Ten team, we (usually) destroy them regardless of venue.
Wow. How do you let Griffey break to the basket all alone like that? There wasn't a red jersey within six feet of him. Kind of reminds me of UTL when ND simply ignored Jeremy Gallon...
some of the most pathetic defense I've ever seen. The #1 team in the country lets a guy get a WIDE open lay up to win. oh well guess were #1 again if we win Saturday :)
I'm going to the game Saturday, live 20 minutes away from Madison. Can't wait to see Michigan grab that #1 ranking again...hopefully! Go blue!
Who woulda thought it would be more desirable to be #2 than #1? This is one of the more bizarre seasons I've ever seen for the #1 ranking. True testament that there is no true #1 this year and the field is wide open.
of Zeller lost on the winning play should kill his B1G POY hopes
in contrast Trey blocks game potential winning shot vs Ohio
Crean cant beat Illinois
I wonder if Crean had a Ron Zook quote in his post-game interview?
Oladipo, the new Baby Jordan as crowned by Vickie D?! I'm not a Jordan worshiper like most but I still can't believe he said that multiple times last Saturday.
That's the best missed dunk since sparty lost seven football games by less than five points. What could have been? What could have been?
Sagarin just updated. No surprises -- Wolverines 1.
