Illinois beats Nebraska tonight

Submitted by hopkinsdrums on

Tonight Illinios beat Nebraska, 60-49. While this is insignificant in terms of the B1G standings, it's another thing to celebrate because it helps *Beilein's chances for coach of the year, and Nik's chances for player of the year (Petteway had a very pedestrian game, shooting 27% from the field). Another thing to celebrate tonight. Go Blue!

I don't know who Beleien is, though.

And all this confirms is that Michigan now knows even the 11th place team can win B1G games.

Once again, if you take a night off in this conference, you will pay for it.

has impact on M's potential B1G tourney semifinal opponents. Nebraska still in the running for a 4/5 seed, though they likely need to beat wisconsin at home to close the regular season to have a shot at that now.

I was kinda hoping Nebraska would sneak into the tourney with their good conference record.  This loss really hurts.   They need to win out and win a couple in the B1G tourney.

But, like you say, it increases JB's coach-of-the-year chances.   I think JB gets it with the job he's done.

Agree. He lost the National POY, a first round draft pick, and a Preseason All-American. We'll see how Izzo deals with a similar loss next year with Payne, Harris and Appling. I don't think he'll be in 1st place with a handful of games left. Beilein shocked me this year. I didn't think that was possible after the run he led last year. His eye for talent is astounding.

I'm thinking more about how Illinois will come out and play well against us just like Purdue did tonight.  Record be damned.

Illinois still considers us a rival for some reason and they'll jacked up big time when our boys come to town.

While it's true that Nik was probably looking for contact too much (and absolutely should have dunked on a play that ended in a missed layup), I still contend that he doesn't get much respect from referees when he goes to the basket.

Tonight's win and Nebraska's loss means that Nebraska cannot catch Michigan in the Big Ten standings.

Michigan is guaranteed to finish in the Big Ten's top five at the moment.  If Indiana beats Iowa  or Penn State beats Ohio State tomorrow, Michigan clinches a top-four spot and a bye in the tournament.  If both upsets take place, Michigan clinches a top-three finish.

if beilein isnt coach of the year i dont know basketball. pre B1G season we were worried about the bubble and how M would win 9 B1G games. we're probably going to get 15 B1G wins.

Just a brutal, brutal loss for Nebraska. They played terribly (I watched a bunch of the game as an afteglow special). Nik had a really rough night in our game, but Petteway was truly awful tonight.

as "focused" as Nebraska was tonight. They gave us their best shot and have nothing left to play for except moral victories. Illinois looked at their game tonight as a chance to get a win and build on it for next year.

Do you even understand the adversity they've gone through? If I'm reading his press conference transcripts right, they are literally playing 8th grade girls at all 5 starting spots. Tom Izzo went blind weeks ago while serving time in a North Korea prison camp and can't adequately draw up plays anymore. I don't know how you don't give it to him.
