Illini student manager now on roster

Submitted by MikeCohodes on

Injuries have been a running problem in the NCAA and B1G this season, not just at UM. Apparently the Illini have decided to take a drastic step though. Their roster was down to only 7 players versus Purdue this week, so effective with Saturday's game against Minnesota, they are adding a player to their roster. The team's former student manager, Ryan Schmidt, has been promoted to walk-on status and will now be suiting up for the Illini. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I just hope it doesn't ever come to this for us.

We did this during the Amaker era for the last couple games of a season. The two guys ended up getting some garbage time minutes, at which point it came out that the equipment staff didn't even bother putting their names on their jerseys.

WBB had a similar problem during the same era, and Cheryl Burnett just ended up yanking a couple players from the volleyball team.

Michigan had to dress their student manager in Beilein's first year, 2007-08. His name was Pete Burak and was the brother of my one of my teachers back in junior high. Pretty crazy. And an awful year.

When I read the headline I seriously thought we were so down in numbers we had somehow found a way to get Illinois student manager to suit up for us.

What the hell ? Edit: I just noticed that the ref, photographer, and team on the bench don't move at all during his missed attempts. Makes me wonder if it's real.

He's a good kid, comes from a great family and his dream of becoming a D1 basketball player is coming true. I'm happy for him.

bball team manager, couldve been a lower level college bball player but not division 1. He spent his summer working with Jordan Morgan prior to his breakout junior year. The team managers get plenty of work, know the playbook from all the film work they do for the coaches and know the opponents. He wont play but im sure he can play better then 99% of us.

Our team manager washed clothes and made travel arrangements. Never once did anything in practice but maybe film. I'm sure it varies, but not EVERY schools manager is involved in practice.

Of course I was bottom of the barrel D1, our managers weren't former high school studs

but he was catered to also. He had a fantastic view when they played at MGS in NY, amazing team meals. I highly suggest if anyone has a kid going to UM get them on as a team manager. If you do it 4 years you get a scholarship to. It's hard work though, he had to show opponents around the arena in off hours. One time at midnight when i believe Illinois arrived in a snow storm. But the more athletic guys will help the players out some.
