If Ziegler goes to CMU, what does this mean for Michigan Basketball?

Submitted by M-Wolverine on
As most sources are reporting now, unless this is one of those GOTCHA moves, Ziegler is going to CMU tomorrow. We've heard a lot of "good luck to the kid...who can argue with going to play for his father...", and best wish sentiments for him are the way to go...for the kid. But what does it mean for the PROGRAM? Both in the short term, and the long term? It's certainly not official yet, and maybe we'll all be surprised. But I'm guessing when (if?) it happens, we're going to get a lot of MELTDOWN COMMENCE and FFFFUUUUU.... So, while people aren't too emotionally upset, because there's still a chance...what rationally is it going to mean for the team next year, and the program's development over the next few years. How far, if at all, does this put them behind? And what do we need to do in the future to make up for it, or will time heal all wounds?

And from what I've read, they've already done so but have yet to offer him. I just think there are a number of good possibilities for 2011, and if they sign Sykes, they are left with just one scholarship left to offer for that class. The implication from some people--not you--is that missing out on Zeigler puts Michigan in some sort of desperate state where they have to sign someone else right now to avoid a disastrous 2010-11. Beilein is not going to react that way, and while next season will be a year of transition, the team is going to do a lot better than all the doomsayers around here believe.

Let me start by saying this, I am a huge basketball fan. I remember going to every game in some of the darkest years, i.e. Josh Asselin, Peter Vignier, Avery Queen, Maurice Searight etc. In no way will this team be a single digit win team next year regardless of not getting Ziegler or Sykes. I actually think that this team will have an opportunity to surprise some people next year, provided Douglass, Morris and Novak improve on this year's performance. Now getting Ziegler would be great, but in now way shape or form is it catastrophic for the program. We have Smotrcyz, Horford and Hardaway coming in next year. We are going to have scorers available, and on top of that Ziegler while being a great scorer is not a great shooter. I think a much more important get for this team will be Plumlee/Williams in the 2011 class. We need some big men that can dominate the middle, that worries me much more about next year than not getting or getting Ziegler.

If Beilein is feeling desperate I bet he goes for Sykes. Would be great if he had a hidden Euro gem up his sleeves but doubtful. No matter what, the 2010 recruiting class is pretty solid although would be disappointing to miss out on all 3 big time recruits from Detroit (who all appear to be staying in state). With Manny leaving, we really could use an instant impact recruit but you also never know who might step up next season. Watching Gordon Hayward, Draymond Green, and DeSean Butler this March really boosted my confidence in Beilein's eye for talent.

Has anyone doubted Beilein's eye for talent? I certainly don't. However, I am starting to get concerned about his ability to land a high profile recruit for M. I realize that he is working with a couple of handicaps such as out of date facilities and actually following the rules, but this Ziegler situation leaves kind of a bad taste.

Smotrycz is one of the top 50 guys in the country. Is that no "high profile" enough for you? I know, he is a whopping 15 spots lower than Manny . I guess Brundidge and Morris don't count either. They were only top 100 guys. So what is the cutoff for a high profile recruit? Top 30? Top 20?

It is mostly just venting frustration after the season we just had. Metrics and Brundidge are both huge gets for the future. It is tough to see a guy we were "in on" for this long go to a MAC school though. I can't fault him for wanting to play for his father, but at the same time it is unfortunate it strung out this long.

He's a good player but it's not like it will be the end of the world. I've seen him play against my school 2 or 3 times over the past couple years and was never overly impressed. It will obviously hurt the program but I think people are overreacting a bit.

Short term - Hardaway will see a few more minutes next year. Long term - Some of us will google him in four years to see how he did in college since we won't play against him and they don't show Central highlights on Sportscenter.

That's because they showed Curry highlights. If Trey turns into a high lottery pick we will probably see him at some point. If he dominates to the point that another team plays 3 on 4 by double teaming him all game, he will end up on Sportscenter. More likely, he becomes a very good player that most of the country never hears of unless he leads Central to an improbable NCAA run. I consider myself a pretty big college basketball fan. I currently cannot name the best player in the MAC. I don't remember which MAC team made the NCAA this year and I don't think I have seen any of the MAC teams play at all this year. I can't think of a player from the MAC since Chris Kaman and before him, Earl Boykins.

but always assumed Chris Kaman was a regular on the sports tubes what with his chiseled good looks and gravity-defying hops. I could have sworn "Let's go out to Mt. Pleasant for the highlights ..." was oft heard back in the K-man's day. Kidding aside, Carlton Brundidge is in the fold, and we have a good shot several top bigs for '11 as others have noted. The '10 class is solid with the three coming in. If Trey does choose CMU, I got to give a nod to the kid. That decision suggests to me it's not about ego, exposure, highlights, etc. I would guess it's a commitment to and respect for his pops, which is pretty refreshing in this day. A CMU commitment will change none of my opinion of JB who by all accounts did a stellar job recruiting Trey.

It means that Lil Orphan Annie may be precisely wrong about that sun thingy. I vote that we all punch our dongs on the count of 3 just to be safe...

It means we better watch out for the kid in a 5/12 matchup during the 2012 tournament. Provided he can shoot the Chips to a win in the 12 vs 21 in the night before.

This years recruiting class is already solid. If he ends up at CMU, maybe the basketball team will beat MSU like the football team did. Oh little brother.

It means absolutely nothing to the program. TZ was never here, so they really aren't "losing" anyone. If coaches played this game with every recruit who signs somewhere else, they would have dispensers for prozac and xanax in every athletic department. If the rumor was wrong and TZ signed with UM, then it would mean a lot, but, as the old blues song goes, "you can't lose what you never had." JB will be fine and UM will be fine. It would be nice if one of these big recruits actually signed with Michigan instead of everyone else, but JB can only coach the players who are wearing the maize and blue, so once a kid commits somewhere else, he really doesn't mean anything to the program.

On certain days this might be handy here at MGoBlog. Michigan is sort of a sleeping giant when it comes to basketball. Eventually the arena will be greatly improved, and there's no other real reason why we can't become a true basketball power again. JB, or whoever the coach is, has to find highly talented kids who are able to see the potential and are willing to play a role in realizing it. JB has made a start, but he still needs more. The problem at this moment is that it takes a bit of a leap of faith on the part of a highly sought-after recruit to come here, when other programs with a better recent track record are also recruiting them. It's just too bad in Zeigler's case that we're recruiting against his dad. That's a tough obstacle for any coach. I'd like to think that somewhere there's a truly difference-making kid who wants to come to the University of Michigan for its own sake, not simply because of how many times we've gone to the tournament lately. That might well be a pipe dream.

he's the kinda guy that just messes around during high school season.. as sad as that is and still put up pretty sick numbers. During AAU is when he really tries and that's why he jumped up the rankings so much this past year. The guy can take over a game and it would be a HUGE gain for whoever gets him.

If Michigan really really wanted Trey, with all the staff rebuilding, couldn't we have made an offer to his father? I'm not too familiar with basketball coaching contracts cause you never hear, so and so was paid $____ for assistant coaching position, like football programs do. I also don't know if he teaches the same offensive and defensive schemes as we do so that is why I'm asking if this was a reasonable thought. I know it's alot to go through for a recruit but it seems that if we really wanted Trey and thought he was gonna be a "make or break" program type of guy that we would have tried to get his father here because that was obviously a huge factor.
