If we can sign 29...

Submitted by blueadams on
This makes sense. The 'new' rule is that there is a 25 scholarship limit per class. Because we signed 21 last season's class, we can 'back-date' 4 from this season's class. That means we can sign a total of 29 in this season's class. Right now, 25 commitments, including Witty. So, four scholarships left to go. Best guess? 1) grimes 2) murphy 3) parker 4) wilson 5) hankins...if someone doesn't qualify (Tony-I haven't even taken my ACT yet-Drake, perhaps?). QB: Gardner, Jones SB: White, Hopkins WR: Miller, Robinson WR: Jackson, Williamson SR: Dileo, Drake TE: LT: LG: Wilson C: Pace RG: RT: NT: Hankins DT: Ash, Talbott DE: Wilkins, Murphy Q: Paskorz, Kinard MLB: WLB: SLB: Furman FS: Robinson, Johnson SS: Parker, Vinopal CB: Christian, Witty, Talbott CB: Grimes, Avery K: P: Hagerup ...pardon my french, but that would be ONE FUCKING HELL OF A CLASS!

One of those safeties would likely put on a little weight and move to WLB, IMO. Either way - I think this brings up the argument that will be discussed 1,000 times before next season: Assuming everyone in this group signs (and yes that is a big assumption as we won't likely get all those guys and one or two won't qualify), does the added depth at DL and DB make up for the departure of BG/DW?

According to a recent rivals article, Marvin Robinson weighs 203 pounds. If he maintains that or gains in college, I'd assume he'll move to the SLB down the line. Until then though, we need to solidify the secondary. Also, I think Kinnard is playing Middle Linebacker for now, but I think your right in where you put him at spinner. He could end up there someday.

We can't actually enroll 29 players. The way I understand it is 29 is the number when you include academic ineligibility, grey shirts, or whatever would keep a prospect from enrolling. We can only enroll 26 guys because U-M had 84 guys on scholarship, and thus you can only backdate 1 guy. I think that's right from what was said by someone in another post.

If we have 84 on scholarship as you claim then we can only have one EE unless the other 7 (since at least 8 are planning to be EEs) are going to be paying there own way for the first semester. I have a hard time believing that RR gave out 13 walkon scholarships this year. Scout's site shows us starting the year at 78, but this includes BooBoo, Toney Clemons, Marell Evans, Justin Feagin, Vince Helmuth, Dan O'Neill, Kurt Wermers plus Brandon Smith who is assumed to be leaving and D. Warren. Kelvin Grady is not on the list and needs to be added. That leaves 70 players on scholarship. http://michigan.scout.com/a.z?s=162&p=8&c=2&nid=683&yr=2009 Throw in the seniors and maybe a couple fifth years that don't return and you have room for 29.

and Scout. They are saying that there is only spot due to their being 84 scholarships taken. The kids can enroll early and be on scholarship because there are some players graduating this semester. That frees up their scholarship for the next kid starting in January. However, apparently NCAA rules you can't use that newly freed up scholarship to backcount. The scholarship must have been available during the year. This may not be true because Scout has changed their story a couple of times. But at this moment, this is their version of events.

gotta hand it to RR for being able to finish classes out (crossing my fingers this one stays intact) but wow, just imagine what kind of classes we can get once we start winning consistently. game ova.

if wilson and hankins commit over the next month or two, vinopal and dj williamson should start to be concerned, as parker is a more prized recruit than they are, and he is firm on his announcing date of February 3rd. this class will probably overflow to 29, which is good to know that recruits still like the big block M even with the past coulple of years.

I doubt that either of them should be concerned due to the possibility of others commiting. Vinopal looks like a player and we've been in with Williamson for quite some time. The recruits who should worry are the ones waiting still looking and thinking we might have space available. Starting to fill up quickly but no I definately don't think we will be bumping anyone due to needing space for a "more prized" recruit.

RR is not slow playing vinopal or williamson. He has already done an in home visit for vinopal and I think a school visit for williamson. Vinopal is an RR type of player, and is not going anywhere. This notion that RR was settling for guys who are not highly rated by the recruiting services and just biding time for "more prized" recruits is ludicrous. RR does not simply star gaze (neither did Carr). Does he go after highly rated players? Yes, but he has his own evaluation abilities) The guys he does not highly prize have already been slow played and not allowed to commit (Barnes in his first class, and another guy in this class who tried to commit this summer whose name I forget). Also, the Big Ten does not allow a team to sign more than 28, regardless of "backdating." 28 is the limit to sign, 25 the limit to enroll. 3 of those players can enroll in January and count against the 2009 class, leaving 25 enrollees in this class (assuming all qualify). So to recap. RR wants WIlliamson and Vinopal and he cannot sign more than 28.

I think I understand, but what if we can only sign 25 or 28? What happens if we can sign 30? These other constraints just blow my mind away.

One way or another, if Michigan signs 28, a couple will have to get the scholarship boot before they enroll in August--whether it's because they don't qualify or gray shirt. I don't think there is any such thing as backdating of scholarships for the limit of 25/yr.

1) 85 total scholarships - you need to have room for all scholarship offerrees within this limit. Room can be cleared by not offering 5th year seniors fifth years and by not offering walk-ons who received scholarships in the previous year a scholarship. Magnus has a good breakdown of this at his site. 2) 28 Letters of Intent per year. This is a big ten rule that a team can only accept 28 letters of intent. 3) NCAA rule that only 25 new scholarship players can enroll in a given year. Per the rules, a person who enrolls in the calendar year of the previous class can be counted against the previous class' 25 man limit if space would have been available. In 2009, we enrolled 21 players, thus leaving 4 spots that can be used for early enrollees this year. Because the 28 LOI's is a hard and fast rule, that means a full class will have at most 24 players counted toward the 2010 25 man limit. Next year, assuming attrition leaves room in the 85 limit (unlikely) and the fact that we will only be able to "backdate" one early enrollee the max will be 26 LOI's.

85 total!? Looking at the roster right now, I see 56 players with a guaranteed scholarship on next season's team. Seeing as...85 - 56 = 29...I don't see what the problem is!? Regardless, even if some walk-ons (like Kovacs) remain on scholarship, there are a number of fifth year seniors that don't NEED to be brought back - Patterson, Cone, Wright, Ferrara, Banks.
