If Hoke is Retained...

Submitted by nmumike on

I have read several times on the board today that if Hoke is retained they will basically quit watching/going to the games, and that will be the final straw. If he does stay on as head coach, what will you do? Sort of a fill in the blank, If Hoke is still here next year ___________.

For me, if Hoke is still here next year, I will conclude that we really can't have nice things.

It feels like the longer this drags out, the more likely this scenario plays out, but I really hope that is not the case.

Even if by a Hoke miracle he was retained (which I am completely against) I will continue to be a season ticket holder and tailgate at every game, but I will bring more liquor and possibly push myself into alcoholism. I have a football that was autographed by him and regardless I am keeping it also.

live 330 or so miles away from A2 and I try to make it up for 3-4 games a year and if I'm lucky, catch them on the road for a game.

Ticket prices are bad enough along with the PSD ( mine came in the mail on Saturday, what timing!), coupled with a shitty product and shitty prices for concessions.  I could justify the cost if this program was relevant on a national scope and beat osu and msu on a regular basis, but it's been a gigantic shitstorm for way too long.

I'm starting to feel that perhaps Michigan's best days are behind her.

I'll be supporting the players, and whoever ends up being the coach. What else can you do as a fan? We are there to support the team, which includes coaches. Anybody who thinks it's the fans job to give critiques of coaching and players, is an idiot. And anybody that gives up on the program, like so many here, are just sad individuals that will probably die angry and miss a lot of nice things in life.

I'm curious to know what your definition of criticism is. If you are taking about pot shots at players and coaches, I am with you. Nothing pisses me off more than seeing "fans" harangue a UofM player or coach as terrible, no good, idiot, worthless etc...

Having said that, if they aren't doing their job, I think they deserve criticism, but make it purposeful and check your ego/pissy attitude at the door.

This is not meant to be in any way a criticism of the commentary we have received from the likes of Brian et al MgoEveryone. They see problems with the program, give data behind said problems, and criticize accordingly. I'm fine with that.

Basic whinny BS is what I can't stand.

For the most part it's the pot shots at players and coaches. Especially knowing, 99% of this blog would faill at anything football related, especially at this level of play. And that's at any position, player, coach, official, shit even ball boy. Agreed, part of their job is being evaluated. But that is by somebody who is paid to do that. And I totally understand that the criticism comes with the job. That person, isn't as you said, taking pot shots at the coach. That is why I really do like reading the content that is over at TTB, you get a criticism through factual information, and you can easily come to the conclusion yourself that a change is needed. I've been pretty outspoken about Brian, and the way he conducts this blog like its his personal agenda machine. And although people do provide some facts(usually very little) they usually include along with fact their personal opinion, and in Brian's case a rallying cry for something he thinks needs to be done. Perfect example; look at the links in the title of the Getting Right With History. Without even reading a single word I knew where it was going. Then I see a tab reading "when can we fire this guy". Now, this is either Brian voluntarily serving his own opinion along with a little factual evidence( which, I think we all know by now) or him purposely including inflammatory material in his posts because he knows how the community will react, thus making his site more popular.

If he's retained it will deal a crippling blow to Michigan football and set us back many years.

Michigan football isn't forever. If the AD keeps fucking up enough everything that is special about it can and will go away.

It's easy.

If the team is terrible for long enough or if the majority of the fan base loses confidence in the program, people wont give as much money, they'll stop buying season tickets and they'll stop going to games. Fans who routinely drive from 2, 3, or 4 hours away suddenly will find the trip no longer justifiable and they'll stop coming.

Some of those things are already happening.

The much vaunted Michigan football season ticket waitlist is already gone. IIRC, there were 200,000 people on it, and last year the AD was practically begging people to buy season tickets.

We didn't even manage to sell out the majority of our home games, and as of this year we are no longer #1 in the nation in attendance. Ohio State passed us.

If we continue to suck those types of things will become less of anomalies and more the norm.

Before you know it Michigan football as we know it will be dead. We'll be just another team playing in front of a 3/4 packed stadium whose attendance varies wildly based on opponents.

You can scoff at this notion, but we're already seeing signs of a lack of interest and coupled with fans/students/alums feeling increasingly alienated by the AD.

Couple yet another failed hire with a string of 5-7 to 7-6 seasons and free ticket giveaways with the purchase of a bottle of Coke will be the least of our worries.

I never said it would "die," as in the athletic department will shutdown the football program. I don't know how anyone could possibly glean that from my post given all of the context.

I said everthing that makes it "Michigan football" will go away, thus Michigan football as we know it will be dead.

It will cause me to go about my day. I will continue to support UM football because my love for it runs deeper than any coach/player. Sure, it'd be great to have the best AD/coach/players but not having the best will not make me waiver in my support. I'll probably be in the minority here in terms of my opinion and that's fine, but Hoke being retained isn't going to ruin my life. With that said, Hoke isn't going to be retained.

Watch about half as many games as I watched this year, which is about half as many as I watched the year before. I'll go to the IU game because it's an hour and twenty minute drive to B-Town, but I'll be mad. Very, very mad

I will still watch Michigan Football. The frustrating actions of Hoke including his stupid clock management cant make me stop loving the Wolverines and hoping for a better day. I wish he had the skill to be an amazing head coach here because I do believe he has the character and he obviously loves this program.

Then I will raise my son to be an MSU football fan.

He is only 6 months but even he can recognize good football versus a shit show, I can't raise him on Hoke's BS man, it just wouldn't be right.

Just kidding, of course, kind of, i think....

He won't be.  If nothing else Hackett is a businessman.  Hoke is bad for business.  Very bad.  They had 10K seats not sold in multiple games this year.  Next year it would be 20-30K.  You can accuse UM athletic dept of being dumb in football administration but in business its generally always leading.

On Mike and Mike this morning, Greenie asked Golic if Michigan football can ever go back to what it once was. And when he asked it, he sounded skeptical. So we're at that point, at the precipice of prolonged irrelevance which makes its permanence that much more possible. I just can't believe the university would risk this over one man who clearly can't perform the most basic tasks called for by his job description.

because there's no way I'll be able to sit through another season of Hoke coached games without getting completely and utterly plastered for every single game.

being very pessimistic, watch the first few games, realize nothing has changed.  Desperately try to give away my Michigan State tickets because I don't want to watch that massacre again.  Probably not attend the last half of the schedule as we continue to spiral towards 1950's Michigan if we aren't already there and finally sit in Michigan Stadium watching Ohio State crumble away the last bits of my hope and faith Michigan can still get it right and return to the once proud football program it was.

I travel to a game every year. Next year would've been hard because I now have a child, but I likely would've been able to work it out. I'm not paying to fly/stay/rent a car/buy a ticket to see a Hoke-lead team. Maybe I would go to a nearby road game if the situation allowed.

I will watch the games and cheer as usual, hoping we can right the ship. I'm just not that petty to boycott my favorite team because they haven't been winning and the coach we blame is still there in year 5.
