"If" game .. LB or Safety positions

Submitted by MichiganMan_24_ on
The day before signing day..offseason..so i am thinking ahead IF(in caps) we sign Parker and Dorsey do we see MRob and Furman both add weight and move to LB ? .. When i think about this it is scary .. scary for opposing teams .. i wouldnt expect it right away but can you imagine them in their Sophmore years .. Furman and MRob weighing 225-230 lbs with the speed they have at the LB spots .. Or do one of them take the spinner spot .. or stay as a safety? .. IMO Dorsey would be our SS centerfielder and im not 100% that we have one in this class if he doesnt come to UM So how do you guys see the positioning play out in the different circumstances of IF we sign Parker and/or Dorsey ? and in worst case neither ?

So you believe that a true freshman at one of the hardest positions to play as a true freshman is a better option than Williams (who I'm not a fan of but at least has experience) and Emilien who didn't play because he redshirted but at least has a year in the system under his belt? I find that a little hard to swallow. I think he will be a good player, but asking someone to start at FS as a true freshman is dangerous and I'm not sure it's a good idea

Furman will definitely be an LB and I have only heard the same for MRob. I think MRob could play safety this year if we go 0-fer tomorrow on the last 3 guys we're heavily recruiting. He is too much of a man-beast to not move to LB. I agree with your thoughts about their speed at the LB position, it would be scary. I really think our D will be dominant in a couple of years. That's one of many reasons I hope RR does well enough to see these classes come to fruition.

I agree with the Dorsey at CB idea .. i can see that all the way and i think he would fill the position very well. I have a hard time seeing MRob staying at S because he would not be my top option to defend the pass .. i see him more as a sideline to sideline pusuit LB .. and dropping into short zones Furman i could see playing the spinner 1 thing is for sure tho .. this is a good problem to have

I have read about Gerg saying there is no spinner but it is easier for some to grasp as just saying its the Steve Brown position or the spinner. RR and Gerg know very well what they are doing but when i think of our future D i see it like this .. but i can be goofy sometimes CB - Christian,Avery,Dorsey?,Jones,Talbott SS - Turner,Carvin Johnson,Vinopal,TGordon FS - MRob,Vlad,Parker? SAM - Furman,Bell MLB - Ryan WLB - Hawthorne,MJones,CGordon (if he makes the move which i read coaches are talking to him about)

What your saying is the Facts .. but take note of my "what i see" Because i have been watching Turner and Bell since JT was a Junior and Bell was a Sophmore ..both being from HS that i go see often. I see Turner as a safety alot more than a CB .. im not questioning the coaches im just saying what i feel And Bell looked good in coverage when Liberty HS played Pass happy teams .. I think he makes a good ILB after some weight adding and agree with the move to the inside. And i seen someone said Teric was moving back to the O .. i just feel we have more immediate needs at the CB because alot of people want Woolfolk at SS

I was sticking to the 09' and 10' classes as just getting a general idea of how we will get the younger guys situated in the position of their future .. Fitz and Demens have alot to prove over the spring and into the fall .. I think both are strong and have a chance to be solid players.

Mack Brown has done that since he has been at Texas. He will recruit kids that are safeties and move them to OLB. OLB play DE. And have his athletes play as CB. He has always tried to maximize speed at the Corner and OLB spots in order to bring pressure. If you watch a lot of Texas games....those guys will blitz and come off the edge a lot. And lo and behold we have Greg Robinson who was the D-Coordinator at Texas. Go back and look at the roster when Greg Robinson was there and look how they converted their safeties and LB's. Michigan's defense will begin to mirror a Big 12 defense before too long. Which is good....because once the speed is there....they will attack more...at least they did at Texas when Robinson was there.

Kids are usually told that when they're recruited. Coaches say, "I know you play safety, but we see you as a linebacker" or "I know you play tackle, but we think you'd make a better guard." They're not usually told, "You're going to play free safety" and then blind-sided by a position change at the last minute.

Mack is the ultimate salesman. He gets these kids to buy in. What position do you think Orakpo. Kindle started out at...LB. He got Chiles to move to WR even though he was the backup QB to Colt...and Chiles got there at the same time as Colt and made the switch to WR last season. Look I am not saying coaches don't give kids the heads up before they get to school...I am just pointing out...once they get there...coaches see them in another position as a better fit....it is then up to that coach to sell that player on that switch and buy in.

The coaches told MRob he will be starting out at FS, which I think is what will happen. However, if he puts on more weight, and a couple of the other FS type guys (Emilien and Carvin come to mind) are looking really strong and no one emerges as a playmaker at the SAM, I think he'll move. The depth chart at the SAM isn't too long, and unless Furman stays there (I think he ends up a WILL) there will be no one ahead of him except Hawthorne. BH might end up a star, but he hasn't proven anything yet. MRob might welcome the move.
