Idle (Bill) Sheridan Speculation = Fun!

Submitted by Undefeated dre… on
In Peter King's latest MMQB column, he has a bullet that he "doesn't have a good feeling about Bill Sheridan long-term as the Giants' defensive coordinator". Sheridan coached at U-M (linebackers and d-line) from 2002-2004, and has primarily been a linebackers coach. Would he come back to join the defensive staff in 2010? Yes, I know it's pointless, and I'm not rooting for him to be gone from the Giants. But I wonder if he would come back to U-M, and how he (and Nick) would feel about the whole situation.

That would be a huge paycut to go from NFL DC to college LB coach. It would be fantastic if he did, but not likely to happen. But, in terms of speculation that he could be the new LB coach, sure that would be nice :)

I am a huge Giants fan as well, and believe me, you wouldn't want him overseeing anything more than linebackers. He ran a zone against the Cardinals that allowed Fitzgerald to cut up the middle and catch wide-open 15 yard passes over and over. It was maddening, and it was a pure schematic problem - you've got to get a guy close to him on every play. Put Webster in man and give him safety help. They just absolutely folded in a two-minute drill D against the Chargers last week, leading directly to the loss. They're also getting no pressure whatsoever with 2 Pro Bowl DEs and some phenomenal DTs. The Giants have definite talent issues at safety and probably linebacker (outside of Boley, who's been hurt all year), which is definitely part of this. And I think the LBs have looked better this year than in the past. Of course, he was coaching them then too, and they were consistently the worst element of the team (though again, there were talent issues he couldn't control). I don't think 9 games is enough to call him a disaster, but there is no reason to be excited about him coming back that I can see.

...what you are saying. I have seen every Giant game and it has been depressing. I think losing Ross and Phillips really hurt but how do you let guys get behind you like that guarding a 6 point lead? Hate to say it but sometimes they have looked like the Michigan secondary.

Gerg is not leaving by choice nor is he going to be forced out. He already has a tarnished record from Syracuse and he has a good job right now as the DC at a big name school. We need consistency now more than anything on defense. If he turns the defense around after a few years he might leave or if he doesn't he might get forced out, but, for now, he is staying.

I agree. A third defensive coordinators in as many years is not what a team searching for identity and consistency needs. Stay the course with GERG, maybe make a few positional coach changes, but see if he can live up to his (significantly damaged but nevertheless extant) pedigree with some real talent.

since he left his spot as DC for the Panthers and now is a D-line coach for the Packers he could theoretically be more available - just another NFL guy with Michigan ties...

here's the thing... when talking about hiring a new LB coach...a new DC...or a new RB coach (as Fred Jackson appears to be gone)...familiarity with rich rod is much more important than michigan ties. like many great leaders (including bo), rich rod seems like he's sort of hard to deal with unless you've got thick, thick skin. he's not at all hesitant to yell at a guy when he's mad at him on national television. it was sort of funny during the illinois game (i think). rodriguez was blowing up on robinson on the sideline...robinson went dead silent, looked embarrassed, all of that, etc. then right after, rich rod starts yelling at bruce tall, and bruce tall just explodes back...twice as loud and violent as rich rod, shut him right up. its a different culture these guys are coming from, to say the least.

I live in the NY area and am a Giant fan. Bill Sheridan is having a tough first year as DC but it seems more a result of the loss of CB Aaron Ross and Safety Kenny Phillips. There was resistance to Sheridan from some of the veterans - he replaced a very successful and popular DC - Steve Spagnuolo - now the St. Louis HC. He may or may not be back - right now the Giants defense is playing very poorly. Having said that he was their LB coach and a very good one by all accounts.
