Idiot Peter King Cheap Shot on G Mattison

Submitted by thethirdcoast on

So, I was reading MMQB at CNN/SI as I often do, and I came across this gem from Peter King on page 4:

Coach of the Week

Baltimore defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano. Nothing against Greg Mattison, who kept the defensive coordinator seat warm for a couple of post-Rex Ryan years, but the Ravens have the right defensive brain to choreograph their defensive plan in Pagano.

That's right folks, GMatt just, "...kept the DC seat warm..." in Baltimore.

I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure that GMatt could develop a defense that would whip the snot out of a fat foot-fetish freak like Ryan any day of the week. Also, Chuck who? Yeah, let's give all the credit to a guy who is basically riding GMatt's coat tails in Baltimore.

Based on the above remark, I urge everyone here to boycott Peter King at every opportunity.

Also, while I'm ranting, the appropriation of Bo's "The Team" speech by several pro coaches nauseates me. They obviously don't know the entire speech or choose to ignore parts of it because Bo specifically rails AGAINST the degenerate mercenary ethic that has completely engulfed pro football.

I think he just means that Baltimore is a more natural 3-4 defense, which I agree with. Mattison did a great job in Baltimore, and all of the players will tell you that. But, to a man, they'd all prefer to be running a 3-4.

Before you go off the handle you should probably look at the stats from the Ryan and Mattison years and see who led them the best.

G Matt was there for 3 years from 2008-2010 their defensive ranks are 2008: 3 in Pts 2 in Yds, 2009 3 in pts, 3 in yards, 2010: 3 in pts, 10 in yards.  In 2011 the Ravens defense ranks 3 in pts and 3 in yards. So Gmatt was better or at least the same in 2 out of 3 categroies and theres still games to play in the 2011 season.

Baltimore has had great defenses with every single coordinator who has come in.  They are all riding the coattails of Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and a bunch of other awesome players.  This whole pretend analysis by King is dumb to begin with.

Whatever the merits of this particular comment Peter King is one of the all-time blowhards of the sports journalism profession.  I tuned him out years ago.

Eh, if the biggest knock on Mattison is that he doesn't pick the optimal way for people to line up in a three point stances then I'll be pretty happy. He's about getting to the football and smacking someone when you do, which is really obvious, but gets lost in the process at a lot of places it seems like. (The pratice videos from Florida in their prime are just vicious, it will be awesome (more awesome than it has been) once Mattison has fully sunk in here.)

Peter King obviously doesn't follow Michigan football... he must be too busy coming up with "Ten Things I Think I Think"...  yeah I use to read his articles... I hate myself for it now.

I don't see this as anything to get mad about.

Unless Mattison is your dad. In which case, fuck Peter King.

Fuck Peter King anyways. He is a guy who has made a career talking about something he knows nothing about. His knowledge of football is exactly equal to that of my dad, who really and truly believes that there are two plays in football (run and pass). And he only talks about quarterbacks, despite not knowing the difference between the mesh and sail concepts. Am I right?

BUT, I'm a Jet's fan as well as a Michigan fan, and I can tell you that Rex Ryan is a certifiable defensive genius. So chill out about the fat foot-fetish guy being outcoached by Mattison. What is important to us is that Mattison has done a great job with our team and that he is, by all accounts, a great recruiter. He's got Rex Ryan in that department.

them. Not just for this either. I have HATED Peter King for the fact he use to ask other H.O.F. voters to not vote for Art Monk because he didn't meet his standard to get in. Fuck that fat fuck.Art Monk has the longest standing ovation EVER at the H.O.F. so suck peter king.

I think you're reading too much into this one.  I don't think it's that bad.  I actually think he just meant that GMat wasn't there that long.  The Ravens D has been dominant for many years now, and all the D coordinators had something to do with it.  But their talent trumps that, even though we've seen how much coaching matters firsthand.

And don't hate me, I do read Peter King.  I think he brings some different angles to NFL stories.

Peter King is an alumnus of the actual Ohio University and the reason why I don't care if they find it annoying that we call the school in Columbus "Ohio."

huh, that is kind of a jerk move.  I do love greg mattison though.  I wouldnt say he is some god defensive coordinator but i will say he is really good and probably one of the best in college football.

The Ravens Thursday night threw the same kind of unbalanced blitzes at San Francisco that made Ryan so hard to figure out over the years, and it resulted in those nine sacks that had a very good team, San Francisco, reeling all night. The key to the Ravens' blitz was taking big, fast and mobile guys like Suggs and Jarret Johnson, overloading one side of the field on one play and looking regular the next, and then never giving the offense a read about where the rush was coming from.

He at least qualifies his point in the second paragraph and gives a little bit more evidence to support his claim in a third paragraph.  The "keeping the seat warm" part was a bit douchey, but I lived near Baltimore for the past 10 years and this year they are more aggresive and creative with their blitzes.
