I love this years basketball team!

This comes from UMHOOPS:

On making the decision to start Horford: “Here’s how part of the decision was made: we were still here, because of this prep, we were still here last night at 8 o’clock. Kids had study hall before practice. We studied, we ate, then we had some more film to watch. And I said to Mitch McGary, ‘What do you feel about tomorrow? I don’t know what to do. You both practiced well.’ He said, ‘Coach, I’ve been coming off the bench for two years. I’m cool with coming off the bench.’ And that really helped to make that decision, and that’s what we have on this team.”

That is coming from a freshman who was once the #2 recruit in the country. I love this team more and more every week. I think Belien has really put a special blend of talent and unselfishness on the court. They way they play for the team and not themselves is rare these days.

P.s. I know my title sucks. Mods feel free to change it if you feel that that is necissary.

and Tyra are dating!?? OMG OMG OMG.

In all seriousness, that is pretty cool of McGary.  The commentators last night were mentioning the unselfishness a bunch as well (as if it wasn't alread obvious...)  In today's world of sports super egos - this is nice to see.

I'm excited for Saturday.

But any kid that comes to play for Michigan should be most loved by the fanbase. Club Trillion guy Corey Person is most loved. Walk-on, bench riding 7th string QB should be most loved most loved. As should Mitch McGary and the superstars.

This is kind of goofy...i certainly respect the contributions of every player...it's naive to think that people don't have favorites due to talent, playing style, where they are from, etc. I don't think people saying Mitch is their favorite is really a slight to other players..hell Mitch may be their favorite too.

which brings me to another random question.

Not sure how to word it exactly, but, was Mitch McGary's commitment to Michigan on ESPN the most publicity a Michigan recruit has gotten at the exact time of the commitment. If I recall he had a primetime (7-9pm) range announcment, during basketball season, on a major channel (ESPN or ESPN2, cant remember but the former would be bigger).

I understand there are many other recruits that have gotten more publicity ala Henson and SMorris for example, that is not my question, but that primetime ESPN hat picking (#2 recruit at the time as well might I add) beats any 20 second Army Game Announcment on NBC. What say ya'll?

...title you can come up with, I'd suggest we'll all have to live with it. Mods shouldn't have to do your work for you.

It's customary to provide a link to the referenced item. Recommend you add that so UMHoops gets the benefit of click throughs.

M better win it all this year because we're losing at least three of our best players to the NBA (Burke, Hardaway, Robinson).

It is really rare to find an entire team of extremely talented players with literally not a single ego.  Burke, GRIII, McGary, THJ and Stauskas are all future NBA players who are all fine playing lesser roles than they could be elsewhere if that is what it takes to win.  I would argue that plenty of teams over the last decade or two have had similar talent as this team, but the cohesion gained from unselfish play is what takes that talent to the next level.  This team has the potential to be one of the most memorable Michigan squads in a long time.

good OP - good insight, and I believe that it is ture.  I think that most of us have a similar feeling that Brady Hoke & Co. are doing the same thing on the football field as well.  It is not only that we are recruiting talent, but it is the right type of talent/character that really can make a difference between a good and a great team.  Time will tell.
