I have two fears

1.  Rich Rod is fired and brings his team back to AA and waxes Michigans ass.

2. Michigans quest to hurry up and right it's ship ends up being a protracted version of the past two years.

not my wish or an opinion just I fear more than anything.  sorry gotta run Notre Dame just called

A man has to face what he is

A man has to face what he is most afraid of.  I'm terribly afraid of butterflies.  If that ancient chamber was full of butterflies, I would be heading down there first.

Nice seats

Those are nice seats on that plane.  If there's a little TV in the back of the seat in front of me, I think a couple gardner snakes would be worth some posh accomodations like that.  Normal plane seats are uncomfortable and ugly.

Snakes on a plane.

We all hope

This is more of an assumption on all of our parts rather than something he's proven. This decision could make or break him in the eyes of many michigan fans.

Trust me

he's not the only one out there.

With Michigan's tradition, selling power and DBs negotiation skills over the years - I think he will have this covered.

We have other options - just that Harbaugh feels the best one at this time.

This is what gets me too. If that happens, then uh oh. I know everyone says BHoke, but then I think about Notre Dame and all the coach change bullshit. Just don't know that he has really proven anything against real competition, not being SDSU opponents. I wouldn't fire RR if we can't get Harbaugh.

Agreed

RR has disappointed us.  But what has Hoke done?

If DB can bring in an elite coach (C Peterson, G Patterson, or JH), let's do it.  But he should have someone lined up (and virtually signed up) by Wednesday.  Or we should just keep Rich.

I wouldn't fire RR for Hoke, that's for sure.

Might be good

If he fired the entire defensive staff

Hired a DC - who is named HC

RR should be retained as OC

Given RR's character - he might actually accept being demoted to OC given he gets a chance to prove himself.

would be a terrible idea for

would be a terrible idea for RR to be demoted to OC (not that he'd even consider it).  That would completely ruin the dynamic of the team and be like having two head coaches.

i thought the same exact thing. I could see RR bringing his new team (only if DB fires him of course) to Ann Arbor and beating us like belotti did in 2007.

Or he could bring his team

and get his ass kicked like MSU, OSU, Mississipi State, and Penn State have done to Michigan.

Got to be honest, these type of posts are incredibly irritating. I know you guys are in the thrall of the spread, but a well prepared team can slow down the spread. Bama showed this vs UF as did Cal vs Oregon. This offense is not unstoppable--no offense is.

Yet another way

have a defense so awful that your spread offense has to press to score every time. This is a proven tactic to stop the spread.

I totally disagree with you

I totally disagree with you mr sal quattro.. I would've put coach rods wvu teams against any michigan team from the last 10 years.. I really doubt any mich st team would've beat any of his wvu teams and I really would've like to see them played ohio state with some of those teams he had at wvu... If i remember right I'm pretty sure rrod spanked mississippi st twice in his coaching career.. I know you hate the man sal but please dont try to make it like he's the worst coach ever... I dont think anyone including coach rod himself would've thought the defensive talent at michigan would ever be worst than he had at wvu.. I know I'm one person who is surprised at the lack of defensive talent at michigan. I know his recruiting on the defensive side of the ball is to blame for some of the shitty defense but coach carr has some of the blame too if you want to be fair.

The problem as I see it

He knew the defense was bad. He interfered with his dc and forced his friends on his dc and forced his scheme on his dc. He also didn't recruit vert well on the defensive side in order to get all his offensive players.

I believe his inflexibility has done him in. Both in offensive systems and in terms of his defensive hires. Being faithful to friends is great, but it just cost them all their jobs, it would appear, because he let his friendship overrule his common sense.
His defense in year 3 is not some circumstance he was forced into. Its something he helped to create

I have two fears

1. Naked fat chicks

2. More moronic predictions of future humiliations at the hands of UM's current C as HC of a unnamed team in order to defend keeping said HC.

Not a

defense for keeping him.  There is no fan anywhere that has that type of "pull".  No Alumni , no trusted inner circle according to DB.  It's my fear not an opinion that pretty much makes it a personal thing that I shared here.  Delusional I may be but my thoughts are surely not moronic

I'll have to politely disagree

I was a bit harsh, but your fear is applicable to a great multitude of teams considering that UM has lost to Appy State and Toledo. As those games show, any team can get their ass kicked by any team on any day.

It is just as likely--if not moreso--that UM will napalm his team. Just look at the historical record. The odds are in Michigan's favor.

needs to get HIS guy, and set him up for success.  I honestly don't give a rip who the next coach is, as long as he steps in and wins the right way and sets our program back up for long-term success with the correct assistant hires.

If it's Harbaugh, fine.  If it's someone else not on the radar, I'd be surprised but equally supportive.

My personal preference would be Harbaugh and a couple of his trusted assistants, and a healthy mix of younger, dynamic assistants from other programs, possibly a retain or two from the current staff (Jackson and maybe Tall), and a couple familiar names from the Michigan family who've gone elsewhere.

Think stability.

If the post from the wvu board that was linked to

was right, he was cleared upto $1M for a top notch dc and nobody would come for a lame duck coach. Of course, again, according to the wvu board link, the only person he really pursued was casteel.
None of this would surprise me in the least if it were true.

I think the chances

that we would scheudule a Rodriguez coached team, assuming he doesn't join a team in the current or future Big Ten would have a limit approaching 0%.

Meeting them in a Bowl game is more probable, but it can't be worse than losing by 38.

look at it this way:

had you asked me what my greatest fears were in 2007, i would have said:

back to back losing seasons

getting humiliated by a MAC team at home

losing superiority over msu

becoming uncompetitive with osu

major ncaa violations for football

michigan as the new doormat for the big ten

i explained to my wife that years ago i would have been distraught over getting destroyed in a bowl game like we did yesterday, but im becoming numb to it all.  frankly, after the last three years, i fear nothing.

isn't that the truth

My fiance thinks Michigan is a ok team. She told me at the Uconn game this year. I can't believe how big your stadium is for a 5 win team.....

I freaked out when we use to lose by 3 points or when Ohio st beat us by 7. Now we lose by 38 and I'm like well we got 1 stop on D today.

Whoever the coach is fix this please!

1.

Anybody have a list of coaches who were canned at destination college jobs, and then took another team to the mountaintop? I'm not talking some guy who failed in the pros, and came back, or lost his job at division III or something, and still went on to be a good coach...but someone who coached Florida...ND...Texas....USC...etc, was FIRED, and then got another shot somewhere else, and kicked ass and took names? Because I'm guessing it's a pretty short list. Even guys who leave of their own violation rarely do it (Saban). Far more often is Holtz or Spurrier, guys who never really match what they did before. And these are the successful guys.

I guess I'm saying, it could happen, but that's not my biggest worry for Michigan Football right now.

Actually happened to me, beleive it or not. Walking into the elevator with a big bag of groceries i dropped my keys.

Of course they fell into the gap between the door and the lift without any key touching either side. Amazing, like NASA programmed the trajectory, I tell you what.  Then I had to wait like 3 hours in the lobby fo the maintenance guy to get the keys.

If Harbaugh says yes, two

If Harbaugh says yes, two doesn't bother me so much since Urban couldn't really do much better against us or anyone else than the Tressel.  Three would sure as hell bother me a lot regardless of who the coach is. The negative feeling of losing to MSU is 10x more than the positive feeling of beating them.

Fear.....

My fear is to find the MGoBoard littered with CC threads every other year for the next 10. I don't want to be Notre Dame, apologies to ND fans you are good people, but I want a coach that will be here for 20 years. Harbaugh will most certainly not be here that long. The NFL is in his DNA, he may resist short term, but eventually he is going to want to take a shot. Also I have a question for all the Pro Harbaugh people, and I mean no disrespect, but what are my expectations to be should you get your way?  What can I reasonably expect from bringing in our 3rd HC in the past 37 months? Big Ten Championship? 9 wins? 7? will we beat OSU or MSU or PSU?

Finally, Major NCAA violations??? Really dude? DB is on record saying it was a hatchet job by the press. I will admit the deck is stacked against RichRod but the "major" NCAA violations are not part of that deck. So long as he is coach of the University of Michigan I will support him.

The NFL is in his DNA?

HGis dad was a career college coach. Harbaugh lived in Ann Arbor and played at UM. You could say that college football is his DNA as easily as the NFL is.

You want a guy here for 20 years? Okay, but based on RR's track record at UM it won't be him.

My question to you is why the hell do you think RR will do any better than 7-5 at UM? What in his track record at UM suggests that he will succeed here? Look at the data. It does not suggest future success--unless you think mediocrity is success.

Eat shit Harbaugh? Seriously? The guy is a legend. He won games for UM. WTF did you do for UM? Nothing, but blindly support a guy who failed to field a decent defense in three years, led an offense that has scored 24 pts in THREE years vs OSU, and oversaw the worst season and bowl loss in Michigan history.

The sad thing is I like RR. He seems like a decent guy, but it is guys like you who make me take an extreme side.

Couple questions for you Sal

I think RR will continue to improve in the win/loss department as he has each year. Are the improvements large enough? no, but we are trending in the right direction. I believe the defense will get better with more experience and a better Coordinator/scheme. I am a RR supporter, but I cannot support the 3-3-5, frankly it sucks. I think the offense will continue to improve with more experience. It seems that the players on offense are comfortable in the scheme and are able to execute, however the red zone continues to be a problem, I am not sure if that is due to playcalling, personnel, or execution.

Harbaugh may be a legend, and have won games for UM but he PUBLICLY criticized the team and the University, and to me that is reason enough to tell him to eat shit.

I wasn't aware that there were qualifications for putting our opinions to the MGoBoard, so I thank you for pointing out my oversight.

My question Sally is what have you done to qualify your opinion?

Dude: that DB discounted the Freep story doesn't mean he discounted the violations. Michigan plead guilty. As in: "We committed major violations." They weren't hideous recruiting or corruption violations. But they were violations. I'm glad you disregard them. But neither the school nor the NCAA did.

Yep

And our next coach will have to pay the price - something like 150 hours of practice will be lost.  That's a lot - remember, teams are limited to 20 hours per week as it is.  That's going to be a real pain in the ass for us next season.

We also may suffer sanctions for our APR dropping too low, which appears likely to happen given the massive attrition we've suffered.

1. Year 1, noticeable eye

1. Year 1, noticeable eye ball test improvement in the two aspects that are killing us. Better tackling, more aggressive schemes at times, stronger kicking game, and a return game that threatens teams.

2. Spring 2011 class: Recruiting of bigger faster defensive players, especially in the back 7. Like we used to get. There will be a guy or two that we gave up on or we never heard of, that Jim will land.

3. Very high expectations for wins from moment 1 from Harbaugh, with a publicly pronounced sense of urgency to be great again.

4. Quality wins in the conference in year 1. Meaning more than 1 against teams we haven't beat since Carr was coach. There are 4 arguably 5 shots to achieve this. A Michigan coach knows that you can only sell the main course of bigger things down the road with actual edible appetizers. Or he should know.

Then grow from there. The days of just caring only  to be faster than other teams are probably over. AKA the Northwestern and CMU approach. He'll be aiming for bigger and faster in one fully balanced package team-wide package.  We could always get those players so we should go and do it.  Guys that are candidates to play at the next level. There won't be a coach in the conference that will have more credibility recruiting kids who have the potential to play pro ball.

We're also going to get the top running back and quarterback prospect in the state if we want him in any given year. Defensively, there is no telling how many playmakers from Detroit and Ohio we have missed out on just from the perception that we don't value defense and from the very poor results defensively.

Basically the approach will be a lot like Stanford except he'll be aware that he'll need to adapt to the Big Ten having played here.  He'll have the luxury of both great contacts in California, a midwest recruiting background from his Western Kentucky days, and a more lenient admissions standard.  He'll  be able to cast with a wider net.

People have to realize that to clean this up and rebuild depth with impact defensive players from what has gone on, will be a half decade process.  But winning at an accustomed level won't take nearly that long. The key will be to satisfy the fans enough with tangible progress on the field immediately.

We'll have to see, but I think that is roughly what people should expect in my amateur opinion.

What are your expectations with rr?

The d will nn not be better with the same dc and cruddy assistants (or at last one of them) and the offense is a queation mark. I dont believe #6 offense with 7 points against osu and 14 against a bowl opponent they had a month to prepare for. I see a lot of 7-5 seaaons full of shootouts and blowouts if rr stays and cannot get casteel.

Gross

But...

What’s the difference between a truck full of bowling balls and a truck full of dead babies?
You can’t unload a truck full of bowling balls with a pitchfork!

Dead baby jokes... so tasteless, but so funny.

Ditto on the ND

but... after watching the MSU (ntMSU) game... it is hard to not support the idea of Harbaugh coming to town. Really, he couldn't do any worse, especially on the defensive side of the ball. He will have the luxury of a bunch of sophomores and juniors being around... but still, that MSU game was pathetic football.

just hope

I'd like RR to stay for 1 more year with a different defensive staff, however I also would understand and be okay with JH coming in. I just really hope we're not the next Notre Dame with all this CC.

As to fear #2

Fortunately Michigan Stadium is not a small space.

OTOH - your seating assignment will be incredibly small...

Fear

There is nothing in this world
No life left in emptiness
Those you fear are afraid of no one
You are alone and you don't know where

The night leaves you believing in nothing
Your body shivers from the cold
And you won't find your way back
When your eyes get used to the dark

Easy, both...I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.
