I hate Tressel...

Submitted by Tha Stunna on
but he sometimes does some classy things. http://www.outlookcolumbus.com/issue.html is a link to an gay-oriented magazine (which I read on ESPN due to Rittenberg, to give full credit) that contains an interview from Tressel (p. 32) about LGBT issues. Apparently, he's the only Division 1 coach who has spoken openly about the need for acceptance of LGBT people without first saying and apologizing for something homophobic (i.e. the Hawaii coach). As much as I hate Ohio State and their sports program, there are times when they earn my grudging respect; this is one of those times.

Good for him. He's the kind of figure that can help with acceptance. Hell, Woody Hayes stopped OSU anti-Vietnam protests--the OSU coach can do anything down there.

Life is another. Good for Tressel. I've never doubted his qualities as a man. And he is a fine football coach. But all of that has no impact on my feelings about OSU football, The Ohio State University, Columbus and the whole damn state. Excepting ,of course, those enlightened football players who find their way to Ann Arbor. We must always have a door open for those seeking the right path.

As much as I hate Ohio State I do respect Tressel. He was one of the coaches who stood up in our defense when this whole practice gate thing was announced. He seems like a genuine guy, and he has done a great job at OSU. Granted, it would be nice to finally beat him again.

That you put in that clause about people apologizing for saying stupid things. I feel like those apologies are so overplayed, and you're right that it is really the only time we ever hear people talking about sensitive issues.

Not sure if you would have got the similar support from some of our friends down south. Good for Tressel though as much as I despise the guy for beating us so badly and so often part of that hatred is because I wish he was our coach. There's a fine line between respect and hate and I'm straddling it with Tressel.

I've always kind of felt that Tressel is a more natural fit for the University of Michigan's culture than Ohio State's, and this story does nothing but bolster that idea.

Rich Rod is a perfect fit and will drub Tressel when given the right tools. RR's offensive schemes are brilliant, they turned WVU into a powerhouse and will do the same in Ann Arbor. Stop hallucinating over a lost paradise and whining about a Buckeye that has no blue blood .... Tressel is all Scarlett and Gray, has been a Buckeye all his life and fits where he is. RR needs his space.

Someone needs to build a time machine so that magazine can go back 40 years and interview Woody Hayes. That would be entertaining.

Wait...How can everyone here have some respect for Tressel and still hate OSU? I thought that one could not feel one way about a football team and the opposite way about its coach? You should all remember this mental bifurcation when criticizing those who criticize RR.

what part of "when criticizing those who criticize RR" don't you get? Let me try to clarify for you. Use of the word "when" generally indicates that one wants to qualify when a statement applies - that one is not referring to "all the time." It means, WHEN you criticize, NOT that that you necessarily DO criticize. It means you have already begun the act of criticizing. Does that make it abundantly clear? Let me guess....No.

I respect what Izzo's done as a coach, but I don't like him as a person. He's got his own inner Dantonio, although he keeps it under wraps most of the time. He once blurted out, "I hate the University of Michigan and everything it stands for." I've heard that he was absolutely merciless towards us on the recruiting trail when the Ed Martin cloud was hanging over our heads.

I actually hated OSU. I hated Woody's pose as a scholar-statesman while throwing one petulant temper tantrum in public after the other, down to the one that got him dismissed. I thought an OSU victory was a victory for the dark side. Since Tressel, it's harder for me to hate, especially going back to 2003 and his public discussions about whether to bench players for The Game for disciplinary reasons. ("Q. -- Do you think their capabilities will affect the outcome of the decision? A. -- I would hope not.") I sort of actually like him. I still want to beat him in November. And the 70,000 "truckdrivers" (per Ufer), and their Woody-era concept of sportsmanship, leave me cold. Thread title was a tad misleading.

I quickly youtubed and didn't find the Anchorman clip: "I hate you . . . but man, do I respect you." Or something close to that. +20 to whomever finds and posts.

Hate the school, hate the team, but don't hate the people. Too many fans can't separate their dislike of a team from the coaches/players. That is why there are idiots in the stands yelling personal insults at 19 year old kids.

but from the discussion I can guess what the substance of his remarks are. I would say the only person to have done something similar while in a similar position of power would be Brian Burke, after his son came out. Burke obviously has motivation to do it, being that his son was gay. In Tressels case it seems entirely of his own volition and not sparked by a personal agenda. This improves his image in my eyes even more. Props to both he and Burke though.

I always thought he was a good coach, but after Oregon, I don't think there are many doubters left. The big smooshing by UF left big scars, but he has put that behind him. I still like Rich Rod and believe he can win. But when you compare our coach's unwillingness to alter his approach (which I myself have defended) with Tressel's demonstrated ability to mould his game-planning to his talent, well. . . I worry we don't beat OSU for moons upon moons.

Funny, around here, everyone thought Oregon was going to run all over OSU...now it's flip-flopped to an outmanned team in an exhibition? Selective memory much? Unless you were one of the few saying the Buckeyes were going to win. And by a lot, from your description.
