I hate myself for this- I see Posada and think Pape

Submitted by iawolve on

The picture in in the "hello" is a bit better, but every time I see the rivals shot, I just think Elvis sideburns. I hope he can be a bit more dominating than the other Tony since I was not enamored with the latter's play. I just feel bad since I hope for higher achievement for this new recruit, but it is the look, the size, the position and the first name so he gets pigeon-holed. I would be stunned if Pape did not show up in the YMRMFSPA.

Tony Pape was part of the slide of Michigan OL performances, where the end result was a guy getting All Big Ten kudos for historical Michigan resume results (thank YOU, Andy Moeller), and less a result of his actual performance and future in the NFL.  Tony Pape, Matt Lentz and others were part of the crowd that never achieved Runyan-esque (or Longian, if you must) results, both at U-M and beyond.

My $0.02 and, as always, YMMV.

(And to the OP, yeah, you definitely hit on an uncanny resemblence...fo sho, the YMRMFSPA will reference Pape.)

Yeah, no shit. Bashing Pape? Really? Because, what? He had one bad game against USC against Kenechi Udeze? Give me an f'ing break. And if you point to his NFL career, I'm going to tell you, point blank, that he's a friend of many friends, and, essentially, after his first year in Miami, he (from what I was told) was kind of...not into it. Like, he missed the college game- the cameraderie, the friendships, PLAYING FOR MICHIGAN, etc. I know he quit football for at least a year and turned down tryouts and, I believe, worked with children. So yeah, some people have different priorities. That being said, as others have pointed out, he was a damn good tackle at Michigan, and I, for one, would be just fine with Posada being the player Pape was while wearing the winged helmet.

Yeah, i feel kind of stupid for reacting so emotionally. I somewhat disagree with the assessment regarding Pape being the first guy to lead the slide and including Matt Lentz in there, but opinions are opinions, and I can respect others'. I actually can recall being incensed at Courtney Morgan for being completely awful in 2002, specifically during the Iowa game, where he was being absolutely torched playing tackle. So...for me, he was awful and I actually thought Pape was pretty darn good. . . until that SC game. Which also, supposedly, destroyed his confidence. As in, he put a lot of the blame on himself for the loss (not totally rational) and felt awful about it.

On a side note, I had a friend at Tony and Navarre's draft day (weekend) party, which I believe was in Wisconsin at Navarre's parents' house, and he described it as the most awkward 2 days of his life, and he wasn't sugarcoating from his description. He was, essentially, a drinking buddy of Pape's from college, so he probably felt kind of out of place even being there in the first place, and then. . . Pape entered his senior season as a fringe first-rounder, and even going into the draft, it was assumed he'd be around a 3rd or 4th round pick at worst, and then Navarre actually went higher. . . in like the 6th or 7th round.

We're a loyal bunch, who have a significant investment (time, emotion, $$$) in our interest and love of Michigan Football (or even all things U-M).

Search for Brian's commentary on the immediate post-Mr. Plow days of March 2008.  You'll find some interesting analysis and commentary on the 2002-2008 O-line classes, their development and evolution, and a copy of the pic of the debacle play where every tOSU rusher is behind every U-M lineman.

I searched using Andy Moeller as the key word.  If you're a masochist, follow in my footsteps.
