Hyundai Sun Bowl Open Thread

Notre Dame. Miami. A classic. 20 years ago. But maybe the most intriguing bad bowl match up of the year. Notre Dame finishing pretty well. Miami coaching change. ACC looking up, but can it continue? On CBS.

This matchup may seem to lack some luster, because both teams are having pretty down years, but just seeing these jerseys going against each other again like when it was "Catholics vs. Convicts" in the late '80s makes me really excited to watch this game.

7-5 in year one despite transitioning from a pro style to a spread with a brand new QB and a plethora of injuries. Good coaching job by Kelly. It does help that he had a Micheal Floyd and Kyle Rudolph
for most of the year.

The way they are finishing the year on both sides of the ball is impressive. ND will be back sooner then people think.

Please they didn't do hardly anything different this year than last, throw the ball all over the field. Kelly was set up perfectly with extremely talented WRs/TEs and a returning back up QB who happened to be a 5 star recruit. If you actually think they're going to be so great please start cheering for them and go away.

ND runs a entirely different scheme from last year.

UM did have RB's and WR's as well-- unless you are going to argue that Brown, Minor, Matthews, Hemingway, Koger, Stonum--all 4 star talents-- were not talented. Two of UM's best Ol were there as well--Molk and Schilling.

Kelly did a much better job than Rich did his first year. There could be a variety of reasons why. Schedule is one. Quarterback is another. Crist is more talented then what UM had, Reese seems to be a hidden gem who is a much better fit than Sheridan or Threet were for UM.

Pointing out the difference between the two is perfectly acceptable. ND is a peer of UM's that went through a similar change to what UM did. It is a suitable comparison.

I am sorry that you are a bigger RichRod fan than a Michigan fan. That is a shame.

You mention a bunch of freshmen (Molk, Hemingway, Stonum, Koger), a sophomore offensive lineman, two oft-injured running backs who had backed up Mike Hart, and Greg Matthews and his 366 receiving yards from the prior season.

Comparing that to Rudolph (returning Mackey Award semi-finalist), Floyd (returning star receiver who put up over 100 yards per game before being injured in 2009), Crist (5-star in his third year on campus), ten 4-star rated offensive linemen who aren't freshmen, Allen (returning senior RB who was 9th all time in ND history in all purpose yards coming into this season) and multiple blue-chip running back recruits like Hughes, Woods, and Gray (two upperclassmen and a sophomore) is intellectually dishonest.

And Kelly still got blown out by Navy and lost to Tulsa.

That guy alone constitutes more talent than the 2008 Michigan had, an offensive unit which has yet to produce a single NFL draft pick (though Schilling does have a shot to be the one and only non-freshman on that team to get drafted). ND played more than a few games with Crist (9 starts), Rudolph and Allen healthy and they still lost a bunch of those games.

Kelly lost the Tulsa game (throwing with a game winning FG already set-up) and the MSU game (failure to put a safe block on in OT) all by himself. He completely botched the clock management of the Stanford game before halftime, allowing the Cardinal to put the game away. Against Michigan he dialed up the Nate Montana flea-flicker-interception before putting a QB with a head injury and vision problems back into the game. And Navy. That happened too.

Draft picks and recruiting stars mean absolutely nothing when the players can't execute on the field. You talk like it was easy for ND to get where they are at the end of the year but you have no idea. So I will help you out

Lets start with a list of reasons for ND not to have had a good year: Entirely new coaching staff New offensive system New defensive system The hardest schedule in the damn country 2 first year starters at QB, 1 a true freshman who is now 4-0 as a starter, he doesn't even look like he has to shave yet. Then there's the injuries: #1 TE Rudolph gone for 7 games #1 RB Allen gone for 5 games #2 WR Riddick gone for 4 games #3 WR Jones gone for 3 games #1 QB Crist gone for 5 games #1 DT gone for 4 games #1 ILB gone for 3 games By the way every one of them missed the last 3 games of the regular season which just happened to be the 3 games ND needed to become bowl eligible and qualify for the sun bowl. Oh and the UM secondary isn't the only one short on bodies and high on injuries this year -Yes floyd is a beast, but he can't throw the ball to himself and when he is double and triple covered its a bit harder to get him the ball. -Kelly lost the tulsa game? pretty sure it was rees throwing the ball, rees throwing the ball when kelly told him moments before that he should throw the ball away unless someone is wide open, floyd wasn't wide open. Kelly can't throw the ball himself so no, he didn't lose the game, he had to put the ball in the hands of a true freshman who made a mistake, it happens. -Stanford ran ND out of their own stadium, they played like the #3 team in the country which holy crap thats what they're ranked. Clock management isn't what lost ND that game, Stanford won it with a better team, a much better team -The flea-flicker play gave montana one read to make on the defense, one place for him to throw the ball, and he threw it to the exact opposite receiver, and the correct receiver was wide open down the other sideline. I don't have huge expectations for the 3rd string QB even if his last name is montana, but I am pretty sure the whole "freshman" mistake is pretty applicable in this case as well. And since you're so concerned about Montana he now runs the zone-read nearly exclusively. -Navy was an awful game plan by Diaco and he admitted to it. Maybe he was over confident, didn't respect navy, or just didn't know how to defend navy. He did a better job the second time against the option, so whatever it was i'd say he learned a thing or two. and you know what, despite all that ND is still 8-5. There are 2 teams which absolutely drubbed ND this year, thats 7 points from being a 2 loss team, 3 plays from a 2 loss team. Not a bad place to be at the end of Kelly's first season.

We could have done the same thing in Rich Rod's first year. If Shafer was allowed to run his own style of defense I'm sure we could have beaten Toledo, Purdue and Northwestern. Maybe we beat Utah or MSU and that gets us to 7 wins. Honestly, that defense had a lot of experience especially on the line and our secondary wasn't as decimated as it would become in 2009. The biggest problem i had with Rich Rod that year was starting McGuffie and Shaw over Minor and Brown. We saw what Minor could do against Penn State and i have no doubt he would have done the same against Utah in the first game.

The players hated Shafer with a passion and many threathened to transfer if he was still going to be around.

The reason why Minor was buried at the beginning of the year is that RR has a no chronic policy, and Brandon, as well as many other players, did not take him seriously.

My dislike for ND has gone down dramatically since Weis was fired. I actually like this ND team and would like to see them keep winning games, except against Michigan, of course.

Michigan is perpetually competing against ND for the overall highest winning percentage. Its within a handful of games.

I say go Canes although so far they look like a disorganized mess that is most focused on staying warm.

This will really be a new direction for them, although Shannon seemed on the up and up. They should have hired Mike Leach, he seems to fit their history better.
