Hypothetical Michigan 30 for 30 ideas

Submitted by Yostal on

While watching Once Brothers last night, I threw out the idea to my friends of "If they came to you and asked you for your best 30 for 30 idea, what would it be?"

Mine was totally MGoBlog inspired:

"You Were Killed By a Bear and I am Sad"--A reflective look at Michigan football from November 12, 2006 to January 2, 2008.

It would encompass the week leading up to the 2006 "Game of the Century", Bo's death, the Game itself, the bickering over the BCS in 2006, USC beating Michigan in the Rose Bowl, The Horror, the Oregon slaughter, the resurrection games against ND and Penn State, the Little Brother game, the Champaign nights, Boom Malletted, Coach Carr's retirement, the coaching search, a new era, and going out on top.

I know it has a very parochial feel and I know that it would be hard for many Michigan fans to watch, but I think it's reflective of a sea change in college football in microcosm.

So, with that in mind, what would be your hypothetical Michigan athletics 30 for 30 idea. It works better if you give your angle.

Yost. I am currently reading a book about how Yost basically created Michigan football. From the building of great rivalries with OSU and the creation of Yost Field House and of course the Big House. A lot of back stories and rivalries that are still a big part of the program today.

Trying to think of ways 30 for 30 would be on-topic, because last night's was so good. It renewed my faith, because I was beginning to think they should have gone 25 for 25, because the quality had deteriorated lately (I had to shut off the Red Sox one it was such Simmons TV masturbation). So thanks for posting this.
I thought about it while they asked that question on the radio today. I think the Fab Five have really been done...Fox Sports has a pretty good 1 hour special they've aired. Though obviously the biggest national interest. And Bo has books, and a series of VHS/DVDs that cover his years pretty well.

I'd go with the mentioned 1997. Obviously means a lot to us, but all the side stories make it compelling. 4 four loss seasons. A coach who was forced to resign, and the coach that had to take over for his friend. The M stands for Mediocre. Winning program of all time hasn't won it all in 50 years. Mt. Everest inspiration. And all the end season drama- Woodson vs. Manning. And how that affected the final results- Michigan and Nebraska. If not done as a rah rah video, I think it could be interesting to more than just Michigan fans. Like Rudy, but with more truthiness.
I mean if I have to watch Steinbrenner, just weeks after ESPN basically did the story 24/7, people can watch this.

I have to agree that '97 and the end of the '06 season would be good ones, especially if the '06 one covered all the craziness after the OSU game with the BCS.

I'd actually like to see one focusing on the Big House, from how it was started to the recent renovations. Call it "The Biggest House" or something like that.

The resurgence of Michigan hockey would be good but I'd almost take a different angle and maybe focus on the student section. Everyone I've ever brought to a UM Hockey game tells me its the best fan atmosphere they've ever seen.

Fab Five has the best potential. A great basketball program that fell off the scale into mediocrity

They basically did a football version of the Fab Five for one of the documentaries "Pony Express" or whatever it's called, about SMU. Michigan basketball never got the death penalty though, but they didn't really do much after the Fab Five "disappeared"

I would def. watch a Fab Five 30 for 30.
