Hutch Stands Alone

Submitted by South Bend Wolverine on

Michigan walked all over Indiana today, taking home an 8-0 run-rule win in 5 innings.  We could talk about the Sierras setting the table time and again, both reaching base in every single opportunity.  We could talk about Betsa, who had one of her strongest performances of the season, fanning 9 while conceding no runs.  But today, it's all about Carol Hutchins.  She stands alone now as the winngest coach in softball history.  She'll want to keep the focus on the next game, but we can afford to take a few moments to commemorate one of the greatest achievements in Michigan athletics history.  Congratulations, Hutch!

Congratualtions Coach Hutch!  Your consistent excellence has maintained the UofM Softball program as one of the best and most feared in the country.  Go Blue!

"In October 1996, Bacon and Schembechler drove back together to Ann Arbor from Grand Rapids, arriving well after most people had left the athletic campus. As they pulled into the parking lot by the old softball facilities, Schembechler saw Hutchins finally walking out of her office for the night.

“Look at that!” Bacon remembers Schembechler saying. “Ten-thirty at night, and she’s working her ass off. That is the best damn coach on this campus.”

Amazing accomplishment.

Michigan is the greatest program in college softball.

We aren't supposed to be doing what we're doing. We're in the Midwest. We don't even play 20 home games.

And yet we've been doing it for decades, have a National Championship and almost got a second one last year.
