Whitlock, the guy pictured in his avatar played a DEA agent who took very serious joy in busting dealers. (And commonly said "Sheeeeeeeet" to convey pretty much everything). He is best known for the Wire obviously but he is just an all around awesome actor.

I just remember it from the old AoL chatrooms, so yea early to mid 90ies.

On top of that, AOL might have been one of the pioneers for chatrooms meant for, say, people with common hobbies and interests of a legal and non-sexual nature (the other kind of chat existed, of course - at least then you knew the drill then) turning into creepfests, so some of the recruiting forums that I've seen for Michigan and other fanbases apparently are taking their cue from those initial attempts.
