HS Football - Valor Christian vs Atlanta Christian on ESPNU now

Submitted by 1VaBlue1 on

Over on ESPNU is Dylan McCaffrey vs Davis Mills (Stanford committ).  The game just started and McCaffrey already has a bad pick - an underthrown long ball after a flea flicker from his brother.  Should be a good game between two of the best HS QB's in the country.

I'm at the game and after talking to a few people who follow Valor, this is a complete rebuilding year and they aren't expected to do well at all.

Well, that's good to hear!  I haven't been very impressed with them, including last week's game.  The offense seems to be all over the place, but it's pretty clear that Dylan is a good QB and his brother Luke is a dynamic open field runner.  Also, their defense plays in similar fashion to a sieve...  But they just held GAC to a punt and Dylan is back on the field now...

So Mills throws the ball with a lot of zip, but his accuracy isn't impressive.  He's missed about 10 in a row now.  McCaffrey doesn't seem to have the same zip, but looks more accurate.  He's hit a couple of beautiful fades for TD's, just 4 and 3 yards, but the location was just perfect on both.  He also is very accurate on quick throws.  So far, I'd take Dylan...

14-9 Valor at the half.

So they just said, "McCaffrey with the fair catch." Is there another McCaffrey? They wouldn't really have a top 50 QB recruit returning punts would they?

Davis made a 2-pt conversion throw that was pretty good. Broken play, so he was running for his life to the left. Doubled back to the right and whipped a running throw to the far corner, right smack on the numbers. Awesome throw...

Seriously?  I thought he was pretty good.  18-23 for 144 yds, 3TDs / 2 Ints.  The first pic was on the first drive - a bad throw under a heavy rush.  The second was late in the 4th on a long ball he threw off his back foot running from pressure.  The DB made a helluva leaping, spinning catch, or the ball was on the WRs numbers (despite being a weak floater from the back foot).  He came back after that one and lead the winning TD drive.  Everything in between was fantastic.  He thoroughly outplayed Davis Mills, his opponent and the guy Stanford chose over McCaffrey.  (Stanford focused on Mills early, so McCaffrey looked at UM.)

Most of the completions were short, quick hitters to the WR on bubble screens and the such.  He did hit the TE's on two beautiful slants for ~15 yds each.  Greater Atlanta Christian (GAC) was getting a LOT of pressure up the middle, so there wasn't time for much of anything else.  And Valor's running game did nothing until the 4th quarter, when the quick outside passing game opened it up a little.  He (Dylan) also showed some chops running the ball, both scrambling and on designed run plays.  He a little speed and some moves...

Couldn't find the stats for Mills, but he was not accurate, at all, last night save for the 2-pt conversion I described in an earlier post.  But he's also a pretty good runner.  Standford will be set at QB for a few years...

Dylan's younger brother, Luke, also looks like he has a promising future on the football field.  Playing with a multiple state champion varsity team as a sophomore, he had a couple of carries at RB, and caught one pass as the outlet (that went nowhere).  But he did have a 22 yd run that showed his speed and shiftiness.  He's a McCaffrey, after all...
