How will Michigan free up scholarships?
Who will finish up the 2013 class has been much discussed on the board, but how will we get the schollies for them? As of this second, there are 23 available for next year. There are currently 23 commits, and assuming they all stay committed (Conley really looks like he's going to stay) we could potentially need 4 more if we get McQuay, Treadwell, Green, and another Olineman. I think it's safe to say Lewan is going pro and Mike Jones won't be returning, but all of the other redshirt juniors had roles on this team. Would we stop at 25 and say no to one or potentially 2 five star players?

I know of one way. Conley said he decomitted today

This is news to me. Was this a twitter statement?

Uhhhh... wat?? Source please.

I am having trouble trying to embed tweet but yes, it was from twitter. Someone over on 247 made a reference to it a few minutes ago. I suppose it's just a matter of time before it's confirmed by reputable sources. I sure wish he would have remained a part of this class.

If you can't embed it, then just post the link. We all have the ability to click on it.
(Although the TomVH Tweet is ominous)

it didn't happen.

When did this happen?! Seemed like everything was fine last night and it was just a visit to see The Game and not a real visit. Has anyone asked him on Twitter or seen anything on his Facebook?

Not saying this is for sure but per his twitter account:
@BlackSwarm_21 put these rumours to rest for us. R u 100% michigan?

It's official now...all over Twitter and TomVH has confirmed.

Attrition, Attrition, Attrition. It always happens.
I don't know if Cam Gordon is that much of a lock to receive a 5th year either.
November 27th, 2012 at 4:14 PM ^
Next question, would they need to free up those schollies by signing day? Or just by the time the new kids hit campus?
November 27th, 2012 at 4:19 PM ^
I can't hold your hand through life, you need to figure this out on your own. (what teachers say to students when they don't know the answer)
November 27th, 2012 at 4:27 PM ^
Technically (by NCAA) it's by the time they show up, but that's oversigning which is frowned upon/not allowed in the Big Ten. So... signing day

Why wouldn't Cam Gordon receive a fifth year? Who is our SAM if Jake Ryan gets hurt?
November 27th, 2012 at 4:34 PM ^
Ringer?
And don't you ever talk about Jake Ryan like that again!

November 27th, 2012 at 6:53 PM ^
What younger guys are better? And if they were better, why did the coaches play Cam instead of the younger, better guys?
Jake Ryan and Cam Gordon were the only two guys who ever took snaps at SAM this year. If Cam doesn't come back, you're left with one guy with any playing time at a position the coaches like to rotate a good amount. Not a great idea.

Does this take into account Ricardo Miller leaving the program (he said he is no longer playing football for Michigan-even though it hasn't been announced by the school-right?)

yes it has, I used Magnus's scolarship count from his blog

No matter how much attrition we have, 25 is our max this year. We can't backdate any since we used all 25 last year. We currently have three spots and are looking at Treadwell, Green, McQuay, Reschke and an offensive lineman or maybe Conley if he decides to re-commit and there is still a spot. I think we take the first three of those available, unless Lewan goes pro, and then we can take 4.
To answer your question though, assuming we have no more decommitements and someo of these kids want to commit, we have a couple redshirts we could let go. No need to name them here.

Bosch, LTT, Ross Douglas, Dymonte, and I think there's one more. Either way, at least 3, which is all we need.

You have room for 3. This most likely will be an O-lineman, 1 RB (c'mon Ty!..or Derrick) and either of Treadwell/McQuay. I highly doubt that we will land more than 2 of those 4 (including Isaac as wishful thinking) and an O-lineman makes 25 even.
We could see some attrition that is unexpected (maybe not to the coaching staff) but we are already facing a fairly small class for '14 so they may hope to "bank" them for then.
If I had to take a wild guess at possible attrition - maybe Ringer at LB? The depth chart at LB is filled with youth and talent with more on the way. Perhaps this would explain the Reschke offer -- although it might have been done just out of respect and/or a favor to Shane.

Grown men hanging onto these high school students' every word and out there "recruiting" for universities is disgusting.
Just a thought barely worthy of a post.

I should've clarified, I meant direct contact via Twitter. There's a difference between getting excited about recruits and talking to them over social networking sites.

going against the wishes of the university that you not do so, and if you fall within the very broad definition of a booster (basically if you've donated money to the university or bought tickets from it) you've committed a recruiting violation that is chargeable to the school, which is responsible for the conduct of its boosters. And, of course, the school is in its 5 year repeat violator window for the practice time violations.
Other than that, there's nothing wrong with it.
