How potential coaches feel after reading mgoblog/press

Submitted by MrSmith on

More serious is what we players are looking for in a new coach:

1.  Passionate about winning

2. Cares about the players and their families by checking up and seeing how they are doing

3. Very Strict on dicipline because at the end of the day you are building a young man on how to be responsible for their own actions

4. Have passion for the game in general and you can tell easily

5. Are serious about education and academics

6.  Community involvement.  Having players be more active and apart of normal student activities

7. Agressive and caring coaching style and getting on you if you have a mistake and making sure you learn from it

8. Having fun at the end of the day and enjoying a great game of football

I'm looking for a coach that is a lady in the streets but a freak in the sheets.  That's probably tops on my list of requirements.  Second is probably a proven winner.  But it is a distant second.

Genuine curiousity: How did Brady Hoke do when it came to #7? From a fan's viewpoint it would appear he sorely lacked in that department, but behind closed doors were things different?

Thanks for the response.

I have this theory that maybe Hoke was/is too nice?  If you look at Bo, Lloyd, Saban, Dantonio, Meyer, etc. they are guys that are pretty stern leaders.  They seem pretty serious and it is fun when you get them loosened up every once in awhile but their main demeanor is very serious.  I wouldn't want to be a ref on the sideline missing a call for any of them whereas Hoke it seemed like he would ask where the call was, clap a bit, and give the ref a pat on the back when in my opinion he should be losing his mind.

Same goes for the players, maybe they felt like he was their friend b/c he was nice, supportive, etc.  It seems his personality is more fitting for an assistant role as he can be that mentor to them and be the buffer between the athlete and the head coach.  The head coach being someone you fear, for lack of a better word.

Not sure I did a great job of verbalizing my thoughts, does that make sense and have any legitimacy to it?

It's like being a parent. If you're too much of a friend or peer, you may be fun, but they don't respect you. If you create boundaries, rules, and structure, they may get pissed at you, but they know they need it and will develop into more self-disciplined, well-balanced people.

i see what your saying. I think hoke did a better job of this than most people will give him credit for. I always hate when a coach berates his players in public. Just like I won't berate my kids in public. But they know when they get home ( out of the public) they are going to get in trouble. I would rather have my coach give the players this same respect.

Maybe a better way to explain it is intensity. Maybe he just lacked a certain level of intensity that the other coaches you mentioned have. I've never played football, but it seems like the players would expect that from a coach, even when it veers into harsh territory if they're not playing up to expectation. Not publicly - that's unnecessary - just raising the "disappointment" level when someone isn't working hard enough. They're old enough now to be able to handle that.

They are old enough to handle, but are they mentally capable to handle it. I always find the psychology of a coaches decisions to be interesting. I'm in my 30s and I still don't like to get a tounge lashing at work, and I believe that should be done in private too. Football players know when they F up, sometimes it's thier fault and sometimes the guy across from you just flat out beat you. Take a guy like Bo Polini, people still play clips of him just laying into Taylor Martinez on the side line. Maybe Martinez could handle it and that helped motivate him, but it can also back fire on a coach and guys will stop playing hard for a guy. It's definitely a balancing act that I'm glade that I don't have to do.

It's funny you mention him, because watching ND you could tell his team quite on him after thier first loss. Some of that probably had to do with the refs hoseing them. But I would imagine a lot of it had to do with Kelly being a dbag. Remember Kelly throwing Golson under the bus at a press conference, also remember how he handled Tommy Reas.

Thank you for your input Vincent. You know more if what is needed than anyone else on this board. Well, unless Shane or one of his peers is on the board. And even then I'm not sure they know. It probably takes a little distance to see the forest through the trees.

Definitely find no fault with that list.

Once upon a time I'd have said, "Come on, man, like any players or coaches are reading this," but obviously you are for one, and I think in this age of social media, even the people who are actually out there doing the things the rest of us are just talking about, have their ears a lot more wired into that talk than we think. I would hope no potential coaching candidate or player/recruit would read too deeply into what gets said here, as there are definitely some loose cannons to go with a little collective hysteria over whether it's going to be Harbaugh. If it's not him, then whomever it is needs to be assured he has 100% support, not just from within the program but from the fanbase as well.

Thanks so much for these posts, Vincent. I am interested to know if you care to share your opinion regarding specific potential candidates, including: Les Miles, Steve Addazio, Jim Mora. I totally understand if you don't feel comfortable sharing your thoughts, but figured it was worth asking. Thank you!

Hackett or his people could get a lot of great intel on which coaches are more popular with the fanbase.  (This assumes that the cross section of people posting here can be extrapolated across the entire fan population)  Although, this might be one of many factors he looks at, it does have a bearing on potential ticket sales and future donations.  So, who we think is a great or good choice does have some impact.

MGoBlog is such a well-connected place that I was actually hoping we would get a player perspective on this because the hire affects them and their lives more than anyone, so thanks for sharing this. Whoever it might be - Harbaugh or otherwise - is hopefully someone who can fulfill those very things. Indeed, I think some of these same thoughts have been expressed at least in a roundabout way by Schlissel and now Hackett as well - they seem to want these things too.
